: Outboarding LCA's on TJ Custom Link Setup

Doing my own link setup, and have been considering outboarding the lowers.

Front and rear axles will be 64.5 - 65 WMS.

1. Anyone thats done this, do you know if I have the room to do this with that axle width?

2. Besides getting my arms up out of the way a bit, and leaving my frame rails free for stands when I work on it, is there any other advantages to outboarding the lowers geometry wise?

I'll be building my own crossmember and flat skid, so I've also considered dual triangulating which would also get the arms off my frame rails, but not sure if I want to go that route.

Opinions and experiences on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have a TJ with a front d60 that is ~65" WMS to WMS. I mocked up my front lowers on the outside of the frame rails and it compromised steering a lot with 39" tires.

It works fine with that setup on my friend's CJ, but TJ frames are too wide up front.

I dunno about the rear, I wanted more triangulation on the lowers, so I didn't try that. My initial guess would be that it would work unless you plan on rear steer.

I agree. My front 60 is at 66.5" with the lowers on the frame rails and at full lock my 42s barely touch the LCAs. You could mount them on the inside of the frame instead.

Great points. Thanks guys. The front is out for sure, I didnt even think of the steering. I'll either stay under the frame, or consider inside.

The rear, I might look at triangulating into my crossmember.

I don't know about advantages but outboarding definitely has disadvantages especially for wheelin'. Why not triangulate them just below the out of the t-case?

Bill you are more then welcome to come check out my FT kit laying here. Triangulated rear upper right at T-case output like Teeny said. Might give you ideas for the cross-member/belly pan.

Also, the front upper and lower mounts are inside the frame rails. You can see how you might have problems with pinion offset and front DS by looking at it. Dbl check your pinion offset and see where your front DS will land, build accordingly?

Let me know if I can help, I have been mapping mine out for awhile now, granted I am assuming 69.25" WMS-WMS.

I have not seen too many outboarded, either inside or directly under the frame rails. Check out RKjpt1's build on WK, he has sunk his into the frame rails,

I havnt done any calcs there but a few reasons Im not that keen on the idea.

Arms to long. I dont want 40 inch lowers, unless I push the cross member back quite a bit.

Lowers end up longer then uppers, making for bad pinion role. Again, unless I can get the x member far enough back to negate that.

Reduced link seperation, further complicating my antisquat.

Not that it isnt an option, just adds a lot of complications compared to moving them over 2-3 inches.

Especially when my main goal is to be able to set my rig on jackstands without disassembling my suspension :) :) Just a convenience thing more than anything else.

Thanks Joe. Probably will have a look when I get over one of these times.
