Heh, hrmmm, where to start..... Was at a local full service junkyard on Monday. I was looking for parts for 67-72 Chevy trucks to buy and resell (found some cherry sheetmetal btw) Anyways, i spy a '79 Ford extended cab with a camper, had been hit by something hard. I wander over to it because I love these ugly assed Fords and notice its a 4X4. Upon closer inspection however revealed that it had the large hubs on it. I go back to the office, ask for prices on various parts, and last thing I ask about is that truck.

Me: How much do you want for that stock axle under that 3/4ton ford out there.
MGR: Is that the 4WD ford?
Me: Yesir.
:I get the lecture on the 2 different styles of D44's Fords had, leaf sprung, and trailing arms: I nod like I am learning something new.

MGR: That is the last of my straight axles, the last leaf sprung one I had I let go for $600.
:thinking to myself, shit, price is gunna be high, he has to know what he has:
MGR: That one is the large hub one so I will let that one go for $400."
Me: Ok, thanks for your time.
I walk out.

I rush my ass back to the house, check my account balance, and haul ass back to the yard right before they close. I pay my $429 for a large hub HD44 Priced axle from a '79 F250, and go home. Got a call the next day, my axle is pulled, come and get. Bringin home my snowfighter tommorow. :d

Is it a high pinion? A low pinion d60 round here costs 600-800 bucks, usally. So its not that big of a steal. But good find!

The 79 should be a HP60. I think you did pretty good myself. I like it when I stick it to "The Man"! I hate it when they get on the spill about "well, that the last one we have in the yard..." and then want $100 more than the parts are worth.

I consider good parts yard like a good fishing hole, its okay to talk about just don't let anyone know the location...:smokin:

I traded a set of seats for my full width D44 with welded wedges. Then gave $50 for a set of Chevy flat top knuckles, spindles, hubs, axles, and calipers. Still need to buy my ring/pinion, highsteer arms, and tie rod materials. But have already narrowed the wedges for my EB and raised the track rod mount.

Good for you. At least you didnt get it on half off day. (unless it was 1/2 off day 2 weeks ago) Last I tried buying a front axle from PNP it was almost $300. $150 for a stripped HP44 with the raduis arms.

But wouldn't you do the same if you were him?

It is all about being in the right place at the right time. I myself am usually in the wrong place at the wrong time and end up paying standard price.

Weren't the big hub 44s the older ones (mid 70's? and older)? The axle he got was a 79 model.

Not to HJ or nuthin I paid $1700.00 For a 79 HP60 snofighter front...........
I also got the matching rear, a 390, a 435, and a 205 all in a running 67 Ford highboy! 3 hour drive to pickup and put on trailer and haul back.
Right Place, Right Time. It took me 6 years, but I found it. finally.

While your statement is true. It could have been swapped onto a later axle like mine was. Here is a 79 HP D44 with 76 outers.

Beavis;cool if it's D60. Still fairly cool if it's a D44, depending on your usage.
I fell in love with the first 76' F250 I saw w/big hubs(it was a D44). I was 16 @ the time. Finally got my own D60 under 79' Big B. One more; boUght a 79'F350 from my co-workers dad, Ford dealer offered him $1500 trade in, I got it for $2000. Camper special 4x4,original owner. Sold it for $8000 to buy our first home.:(

you paid $400 and a bottle of Crown for a $200 front axle and a $50 rear axle. good deal.
that puts this whole ultra rare, highly desireable, 78/9 only d60, for $400, into perspective.:flipoff2:

All it took for me was a phone call.

Well he didn't say snowfighter 'til the end of the post. it read to me like he got a big hub 44 for $400 which doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. If it is in fact a D60 then I gues he came out ok, assuming he doesn't have to completely rebuild it.

True, but they work fine in a light vehicle.
Or in a heavy vehicle if you keep the factory wheel back spacing.

When I traded trucks, my '01 F350 had 222,000mi on the left bearing, the right one lasted about 120,000mi.

Don't know what I'm going to do with that D80 though...you think it's overkill for a EB?

bigreen
12-11-2006, 09:00 AM
no such thing as overkill

i have about 30K on my '02 front axle, i bought them with 1K on em...i think they are nearing the day of needing the freespin kit; they're on a light truck, but with big boggers and little backspacing
