ok here's the problem, on the way to work this morning in about 8 inches of snow i dropped the driveshaft on my 87 Ford Ranger. i was in fourwheel drive at the time. i just assumed it was the front u-joint. well, went back to get it, the u-joint is fine.it just seem to have slid off the shaft on the back of the transmission. the splines on both shafts look fine. what the hell happened??? if you have any ideas, i would greatly appreciate it. -scott

Joint straps at the pinion loose? If you've got the stock shaft in a stock truck, unless the straps were loose, you would have to have some noticable issues like spring u-bolts loose or extremely wore out/broken springs that would allow the pinion to pitch enough under accel/decel to pull the shaft out of the splines.

ok, i completely forget about this. yesterday i was turning onto the road and suddenly there was a pretty bad vibration, it seemed to me like it was coming from the transmission(driveshaft?) once i hit about 30mph it stopped and didn't do it again. sorry i left that out, it could of been helpful at the start.

Offrhoder4x4: are you talking about the straps on the actual rearend itself? sorry, i don't know much about trannys/rearends and all that good stuff.

Sounds like you had a loose strap on the pinion yoke and the ujoint caps spit out. Especially considering you had vibrations earlier.

What he said ^

By straps I mean the little u-shaped bolts that hold the u-joint on the rearend at the pinion yoke.

Here's some pics of rear end yokes the ujoint straps: http://gearsandrears.com/yokes.html

DAMN! i wish it was just a loose strap. the output shaft snapped off. the splined part is still there but the threaded part on the back of that snapped clean off. how hard is it so change the output shaft?? anybody?

if the output of your tcase is broke, you'd probably be a whole lot better off just to get a junkyard unit and replace it.
