: Got it running

Per request ;) Here is the update

Got my junk running last Tuesday. Started fairly easily, and ran REAL rough at first. After about 10-15 min (I would assume just enough time for the brain to figure shit out) it started getting a lot smoother and cleaner. After 30 min or so It runs killer

only had a few issues. Had to swap all my 4.0 pullies for the belt to line up. Biggest issue here was the 4.0 main pully (off the crank) is completely different as to the depth of the mounting flange. Easy fix...got 3 fat ass washers and notched em to fit over the shaft...good to go. Also had to "rig" the alternator to work but really wasnt a big deal.

I got a water leak :( Only wierd thing is that it is completely intermittent (seems to only do it when cold) comes out the back of the head and runs down right between the bellhousing and block. Scared the hell out of me at first, but it only does it till operating temperature, and I have ZERO water in my oil.....so I am not worried about it yet. I just threw some cardboard under it while warming up and no issues after that :)

Main problem wasnt even motor related. I CANNOT get my power steering to bleed out. I have ram assist and it is NO FUN to turn without the lines bled thoroughly. Long story short, I COULDNT get it to bleed so went without power steering  Lemme just tell you, doing Fordyce without power steering is not fun at all. After last weekend I felt like I did 10,000 push ups  I am still sore.

Anyways, thank to all you guys that helped, I could not have accomplished this without all your info. Special thanks to FULLSIZE, Joe (for the motor), and all the RPS that helped :flipoff2: Have a  on me :D

So Keith,
I have been waiting here for awhile. How is the power of the new combo? Is it more than the 4.0, same, or crappy? Was the torque curve better for wheeling now? Come Awn now, enquiring minds want to know. I'm glad to hear that it worked out for you.

The two end head bolts on the driivers side (#1 and #6) are suppose to be torqued less than the rest of them, and have sealant applied to the threads. Might want to check there. If this is the case, just remove the bolts, and apply sealer to the threads, and re-torque.

Thanks man. Honestly, I cant tell any difference. I trailer'd it to the trail, and with the atlas never really felt the power band ;) It wheeled so well I never really had to do anything but "try" and steer it  It seems about the same to me. All I wanted was an engine that ran, and this does. One thing though, I can tell the 258 is a little tired. Rod knocks and it doesnt exactly idle perfect. Runs good under load though :) What can I expect for a free motor with a hundred thousand miules on it. I never even opened it up, slapped on the head and hoped it would fire :D

could be. we didn't put sealer on those, but we torqued them less.:p maybe it was to much rain on the head or to much:beer:

Yeah, putting a motor together in the rain with a 2 foot overhang isnt exactly ideal  Thanks again Brian, I will get the rest of my junk soon as possible. ;) I got your messages....call me at home tonight after 7

Here's the reason you need to seal the threads of the No. 11 head bolt and why you should torque it 10 ft.lbs. less than the others ...

The threads go directly into the water jacket where the water pump impellers go ... plus notice how little meat there is under this cornerstone head bolt!
If it is over torqued, the whole left front corner of the deck will many times sepertate leaving a crack starting about one inch below the deck at the large, round water pump opening and traveling around the corner skirting rearward.

Yeah, I figured that one out earlier when the pump leaked too  Had to pull the grill and everything back off late Thursday night ;) It leaking from the back of the head though.....right next to the firewall.
