: 203 doublers
jeeper111 05-08-2002, 06:03 PM I was looking at the ord site and I think that it would probably be a better idea to go with the 203 doubler than to go with the klune v. I figure at the least it will be 1000 dollars cheaper but what I am wondering from people that have run them is. How well do they work and has anyone broken one? I tried to do a search but didnt come up with anything usful which I thought was strange.
ChadLloyd 05-09-2002, 04:55 AM Not the ORD doubler, but same idea:

It works great, no reliability problems so far. Gives you lots of flexibility, and combined with the right other parts, more than enough low range. Is also very easy to shift.
I use 4hi with the doubler in low on easy trails. What's nice about that is you can pop into high real easy, which helps when backing up at 8:1!!! (in the 435)
On harder trails I use low range in my transfer case, then just put the doubler in low for really tough sections.
BlazzinOR 05-09-2002, 10:33 AM There are a bunch of guys from www.coloradok5.com that run the ORD doubler, including the owner of ORD himself, Stephen Watson............second place at TTC 2001...............right behind the winner from the PNW Brian W in his beastly BigBadBurb..............also running an ORD doubler (I think) - both guys with mondo big blocks and I know in at least Stephen's case never has had any breakage. No better qualifications than those two guys...............
Ultim8kaos 05-09-2002, 11:31 AM I am using the ORD doubler in my rig and have had very good results with it. Much easier to control on the obstacles. You can also check out www.wagonermachine.com as they also offer a doubler similar to the ORD unit. If you have seen the inside of the 203 range box and looked at the gearset you will have noticed some mondo gears! Don't think breakage will ever be an issue especially since this is the first box to see any torque.
jeeper111 05-09-2002, 12:52 PM thanks guys I appreciate the thumbs up. This gives mea reason not to buy a klune V and get reaped over the price. :smokin:   to you
60seriesguy 05-09-2002, 01:54 PM Going a step further, is anyone here running aftermarket lower gears in an NP203? I've heard they're available, but I'd like to hear some first-hand reviews!
offroadr35 05-09-2002, 01:55 PM by the time you do the doubler and get the lower gears you'll have spent the same as a Klune
Depdog 05-09-2002, 02:01 PM The above mentioned shop Wagoneer Machine, sells the lower gears for the 203. I believe its on exchange base only at 1000 bucks a pop. Must be some kind of case modifications that have to be done.

morgan 05-09-2002, 02:44 PM I have an NP203 behind an SM465 and in front of a late-70s Land Cruiser case. No breakage, only real problem was that I tried to use the original "wallered out" input gear on the NP203 and had to switch to a new one a year later. Also, the stock detent spring isn't beefy enough to keep the 203 in gear. I switched to a beefier spring.
I have three shifters, one for hi-lo on the 203, one for hi-lo on the LC case and one for 2-4 on the LC case. They are OK, after a couple revs. All mechanical linkages.
I got help from Lil'John on this list and Gary Kardum of Mudrak Custom Cruiser (mudrak.com) and Butch Lewis of ButchBuilt.com. I am no mechanical genius.
Here are some pics (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/GRB/) from the install, never did a write-up. I think my total expense was somewhere around $1100 for the 203, factory adapter, AA plate, etc.

Medusa 05-09-2002, 02:52 PM I spoke with Wagonner Machine a few weeks ago about their lower gear set for the NP203. They have abandoned the originally advertised 3.6: 1 gear set and now offer only a 3.0:1 option -- still for $1000. The low range gear is so large that it requires extensive grinding on the case -- hence the reason for exchange only. The prototype 3.6 gears were put into Dodge and GM cases. When they tried it on Ford NP203 units, the cases were just too small. So they have scaled the gear sets down to 3.0:1. $1k is a pretty hefty price for only a 50% reduction in the gear ratio, in my opinion.
jeeper111 05-09-2002, 04:57 PM aggreed. that is why I will be running the 203 doubler in front of my dana 300 with the new novak HD 4 to 1. that will give me 2, 4, and eight to 1 in my t-case. I was going to get a klune but this will only cost about 850 bucks instead of 1900. Much better. plus I didnt like those cable shifter things that the klune had. I like the idea of a triple stick much better. :D
well that oughta test them 4:1s pretty good
jeeper111 05-10-2002, 12:19 AM thats the idea but I am not too worried averythingI have ever gotten from them has been awsome quality so I am sure this will be too. I just think that the doubler is alot better option than the klune!!!

Do you have a website, or a phone number for this place??
jeeper111 05-12-2002, 12:51 AM the 4 to 1 is from naovak-adapt.com and the doubler is from offroaddesign.com
