: samurai engine swap
jeepcj7a 05-08-2002, 09:08 PM just recently my 1.3 liter motor :nuke: in my 86 samurai. So I was wondering if anyone has done a swap to totally runnng Toyota i.e. engine tranny transfercase and axles. just recently I purchased an 86 toilet with the 22re motor replaced with a 20r motor and I was going to use this rig as a donar.
Zukinstein 05-08-2002, 09:29 PM I did. Built my own crossmembers for the engine and trans. Also cut down the trans tunnel and shrunk the shifter. Ran an 81 22r carbed, 4speed and t-case with diffs. Was quite nose heavy, but worked real well. Had to use electric fan in front of radiator. Don't try to use the Zuk clutch cable. Mine only lasted for 5strokes then broke. I had the whole donor truck so I used the clutch pedal and hyd. assembly and grafted them to the Zuk. Was actually easier to do than I first thought. It was a good improvement in the low end, and crawled much, much better but I was actually looking for more mud boggin, sand dragin fun as well as crawling so I'm working on a 4.3 now.
Azrckcrawler 05-09-2002, 06:36 AM Got any pics of your swap? I am contemplating this myself.
canzuk 05-09-2002, 03:41 PM I just finished a 3.0l toy motor - trans and t-case swap. It was a good swap, fabed up motor mounts and t-case mount. alittle triming in the tunnel and an electric fan. I have only run it Three times and the first two times the fuel injection was fucking me around, but the last time I was out it ran sweet!! Tons of power, and good responce. I am turning 33" 14 boggers...
Rockrat 05-09-2002, 06:29 PM lets see the pics of that 3.0 cant post, email me and Ill postem for ya
scwafish 05-09-2002, 08:41 PM I just ran mine down the street with 35s and a 16v and it has some serious scoot ...plenty of power :D Everything else is toy, the pumpkins are 5.29s.
Zukinstein 05-09-2002, 10:36 PM I'll track down the 22r pix this weekend and get them scanned. (I'm a newbie, too when it comes to "my" pix on the computer!) Might take a few days though, got plans for Mommies weekend. I suppose that I can't post them? Too young? Anyway, I would also like to see the pix of the 3.0 swap!
Zukinstein 05-09-2002, 10:42 PM Two things I learned with the toy swap... Make sure you ground the engine to the firewall, firewall to bat (everything grounded) or it'll try to use the throttle cable for the ground. Also mysteriously, the engine torqued forward instead of side to side! Wierd, had to chain the engine back to keep it out of the radiator! But I also discovered that the stock tin-top does this also, but the t-case is divorced so you don't see it in the engine comp. Is it a Zuk thing.
canzuk 05-10-2002, 06:35 AM I DO HAVE SOME PICTURE BUT THEY ARE PRETTY SHITTY AND THEY ARE IN THE TESTING STAGE. I WILL TRY AND SEND THEM OUT..

FWIW, I have the 1.6 16V, 5.29's, GRS1, 33's and I agree. It scoots!

When you guys get a chance do a 0-60 measurement. I realise it won't be accurate but it would be nice to know your definition of "scoot".
Shrock 05-10-2002, 08:40 AM I was thinking about that. I read somewhere a guy did a 0-60 before and after swapping out a rebuilt 1.3 and got 22sec. for both. Both 1.3's were fairly stock. Dont remember tire/gearing info, but I do remebr it was a very mildly built vehicle.
Has anyone else done this?
I aint dropping the clutch at 4000RPM's, but I'll try to get a number for you from a rolling start or something. :D
Drop the clutch at 5k it does like it.

That was me. My super duper 1.3 was the same as the old one. I suspect it pulls stronger in at the low rpms (sure felt like it) and slows down as it goes up due to the low end cam we put in there. It's funny because no one posts numbers so we can quantify this stuff. If I ever remember I'll do another 0-60, won't be valid against the old config but I'd like to do it just for kicks.
Sarcastro 05-10-2002, 09:08 PM Damn that 3.0 swap looks like it took a shoe-horn, some talcum powder, and a serious amount of shoving to get it in there:D
Kudos..:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Toywagon 05-10-2002, 10:02 PM Ive done the Toyota 3tc swap on mine. Im running Toyota engine/trans, and then back to the suzuki t case.

rotozuk 05-10-2002, 10:34 PM When I had the 1.8 gas VW in mine, I could pull away from any other Suzuki based swap I ran across. That includes the 1600-16 vlave. My buddy had the 16 valver at the same time I had the VW, so we would sometimes swap vehicles. I liked the rev happy nature of the 16 valve, and liked the low end torque of the VW.
The big difference was in how you drove them. Top speed was about the same, but the bigger VW didn't need to shift nearly as often as it had a much wider power band. It was pretty sweet in the dunes too. :D
Never did a 0 to 60 time though. It would surprise the average Honda at a stop light, but that was about it. Now the rotary swap I'm completing now should be really sweet in the sand! Who knows, maybe I'll be able to beat a few more Hondas.
My buddy that did the 4.3 swap (Vortec) with a manual tranny was racing built quads up the sand dunes.. That was until the driveline blew. But that thing had lost the Samurai "feeling".

Zukinstein 05-10-2002, 10:58 PM "Samurai feeling"? Meaning light weightedness? More nose heavy?
