define bad idea...you will chirp your tires every time you turn a corner, tires will wear faster, it will try to drive inna stragiht line regardless of the direction you want to go in, and some people think they suck in the snow...Mine is DD'd with a locker in the rear, the last one was DD'd with a spool...go for it
burbanbeast 12-05-2006, 09:00 AM so a locker would be a better idea than a spool?
WA_yota 12-05-2006, 09:04 AM I ran weld-a-track in the rear and will never do that again, locker is the best on a dd
blkntancj 12-05-2006, 09:08 AM As far as the thick gears go, it just allows you to run them on the lower series carrier, ie run 4.56 thick gears on a 4.10 and down carrier

so does that mean you would be able to run 5.13 thick grs or 488 thicks in a 4.10 carrier?
and what kind of locker would yall recommend. i know ill probably end up with a detroit but from personal experiences what do u guys like

On a DD, I'd recommend an ARB or Detroit depending on how much you're willing to spend ;)

I ran a spool for a long time in my old 5 and I agree with Langford ;)
binderbasher 12-05-2006, 11:43 AM I would run an arb or spool/lincoln locker. 14bolt detroits x heavy rig X heavy foot =:nuke: I have a 14 bolt, 5.13 gears, 38's, Lincoln locked, and it works great. Basicly works the same as a (detroit) locker except its locked when you let off the gas in turns too. If you are on a icy road you just have to slow down a bit, and dont hit the gas or let off the gas too fast, in turns especially.
jeepcj75 12-06-2006, 12:48 PM I also ran a spool for a bit on my jeep. It wasnt to bad just at low speeds you could hear it chirp. i thought it was cool, then i looked at my tires:laughing:
detroit, ARB, even a lunchbox locker would work. ARB's are the shit though:smokin:
theydontstop 12-06-2006, 01:03 PM You're not very clear. It sounds like you have a rear axle that is NOT a 14FF and you would like to spool that axle right now. If this is correct, I would advise against it. You either have a 10, 12, or 14SF rear axle, all which would require a c-clip eliminator. Don't waste money on the axle you have now when you can pick up a 14FF axle for <$150 anywhere and spool/weld/lock that axle instead.

Yea, don't buy a $400 detroit for a 12-bolt... Or gears for that matter, if you plan on going 14Bff. I can't see you doing anything to that 14Bff with 38's that is going to blow it up on the street. I run a Lock-Rite locker in my D70 rear on my DD and it gets kind of annoying some times, but I can live with it just fine. You have to change your driving style a little bit to keep the ratcheting action from killing you inside the cab. But with a spool there is not ratcheting action, just like a lincoln locker its constant and smooth. My trail rig is lincoln locked in the rear and the little bit I drive it on the road it seems to not be that bad, so I could see driving a lincoln locked rear around...its just gonna eat up tires like crazy!
Good luck whatever you do.
Chris
1TFROT 12-06-2006, 07:55 PM my DD has been spooled for about 2 years now (9" rear) and it's fine IMO.
but, it's also a 124" WB so that makes a difference. we get nasty weather here in the Chicagoland area and I don't mind it. just have to change your driving style a little.
I rotate the crap outta my tires and they are doing pretty good so far. this is on 37" Trxus MTs (had 37" MTRs that wore really well even with the spool)
