: My First Scout...
REDSKY1085 12-05-2006, 06:44 PM Hey guys, I'm from San Jose ,CA and I just picked up my first 1973 scout II, it has a bunch done to it but it's not finished yet. It has a Chevy 350 under the hood with a T350 and a Np205. Dana 60 front and rear; I think they were off an old dodge. It is also SOA with stock springs and has a 3" body lift, all to clear 37x13x16.5 boggers. Looking to put in an electric fan soon :) With all that said. I'm still looking to piece it back together. It’s in need of a top. Preferably a hard top but I’ll take what I can get, also Doors and a cage or roll bar for now. If anyone can help out it would be greatly appreciated. just looking to get the cab Sealed for now.
I just gave it a paint job last weekend in my friends backyard. i think it looks better than the (rust and white) when i picked it up last week.

YellowIH 12-06-2006, 09:24 AM you missed your calling as a stunt double for Frodo Baggins.
HAHAHAHA...............whew....
Where's the tech.
You need a roll bar and bungie cord to strap the phone book to the driver's seat......evidently.
Sand73 12-06-2006, 09:36 AM ... It is also SOA with stock springs and has a 3" body lift, all to clear 37x13x16.5 boggers...
Seems kinda tall for only stock springs on SOA and a 3" BL
When I first got my scout thats what it had, but I could onlt fit some 35's...
I think you have maybe 2" lift springs.
Heres a pic of my old set up:

Snoopy 12-06-2006, 10:17 AM Oh my goodness, its Silver Bullet! Did you buy it from a guy named Dan?
Snoopy 12-06-2006, 10:29 AM ITS CONFIRMED! That's what I call SilverBullet. My old partner and I did the axle swap in it back in 2000 for dan ~ I remember we were starting the SOA and he called us to tell us he found that set of D60s out of a 91 Dodge for $200 (for the set, the local yard has a $99 axle specail no matter what they are out of). We built a custom cage in it and installed the SSII inserts in 10/2001 ~ that night he loaded it on a Uhaul dolly and drove it out to Cali. It had a Super-built 454 in it then and after seeing it ROAST a few tuner Honda we dubb'd it SilverBullet.
I hope you don't plan on taking those SSII inserts out, the brace under them is welded in. ~ Dan said he wanted something that wouldn't come out and give some structure to the body.
Dang man, you guys are looking at D and C's proto-type RS system. Back before we cleaned them up and engraved our logo in the side! Heck, I think those shackles aren't even ones built for us ~ before we had them changed up for a bolt-in center peice and all. That scout was one of the first SOAs I did. Definately the first D60 conversion and the first HySteer we ever did.
Snoopy 12-06-2006, 10:47 AM Just for kicks....
Here it is just after the SOA ~ didn't have the 37s yet.

From the side. No, that's not the custom cage we put in it, that is what it had before we caged it. In fact, the cage we put in it was the original Project 3 cage.

Just looked up his inv. Doesn't looks like we replaced the springs. They may have been re-arched. Remember, the D60 axle w/ perches are taller than D44s ~ that was over 6 years ago, so I don't remember the details.

ih4ever 12-06-2006, 11:33 PM Is it me, or are those 3" body lift thingies tweaking the crossmember?
heck i had 1in body lifts on mine and it did the samething, only my ends got crushed in... so i removed the whole rear crosss member and replaced it with 1/4in and capped the ends, held up fine so far:D i think my problem was too much weight and the very end of the tailgate

Mine is doing it without any body lift.... just poly bushings. Of course, failure to keep the rig on it's wheels and off the cage may have something to do with it. :flipoff2:

I applaud the newb for even having photos...He is already a step or two above the rest of the riff-raff that wanders in the door because of having photos.
Posing in front of your rig...like a gangstaaaarrrr...and posting said photo on the largest 4x4 website in the world is funny.
I will make fun of you if you are 3ft tall and deformed...OR 6-5"ft tall and 340lbs of fucking muscle...it is the nature of the beast.

I'm not getting holy roller on ya, but I do think its getting a little deep in here with the comments. I doubt the new owner needs a fat guy to stick up for him, nor did I imply he did. :p

He has a fat guy making fun of him so why not one sticking up for him. We do need some tech though or OS will shut us down.
REDSKY1085 12-07-2006, 08:08 PM Just to let you all know the guy that is in front of my rig IS NOT me. It's a buddy of mine. I just thought it was a funny shot being that he is 5' tall. But his rig is bad ass and in the process of some nice upgrades.
But on a real note. With that 3" body lift the fan obviously wont line up, and it tends to over heat when at idle. I’m looking at putting in an electric fan (Flex-a-lite) that a buddy gave me. I think that it actually came out of a 5.0 mustang. I’m trying to figure out how to mount it up right now. The arms that hold the fan to the radiator aren’t long enough to wrap around the radiator. I’ve been looking into going ghetto and getting some angle brackets from OSH and get something going. I’ll post some pix in the next few day for you guys.
If you’ve put an electric fan in your rig thoughts and pix would be appreciated.
james west 12-07-2006, 08:40 PM zip ties....the fasteners of champions.....really though, feed them through the radiator and use metal and rubber washers stacked on the ends, and call it a bootiefab day:D
reuben 12-07-2006, 10:20 PM check out the 2 speed fans out of a mark8 or something, they fit right in the radiator and will solve your over heating issues.
1st Recline Bn 12-08-2006, 01:54 AM I think snoopy has posted more tech than the dude this thread belongs to.
for real though two speed ford fans are good I have a taurus fan in mine like 20 bucks at a junkyard
real good install instuctions in FAQ

X2 I have been picking them up at the JY out of late model T-Brids and Mark 8's There is very little modifications to get them to bolt in. Rock Tractor is running one in his rig now.
MochaMike 12-08-2006, 09:59 AM I've had a Taurus 2 speed (from a 3.8L) for 2 years.
If you don't want to deal with wiring up 2 relays, you can get one from a 3.0L... They are only 1 speed (IIRC it pushes inbetween Hi/Lo of the 3.8).
Snoopy 12-08-2006, 10:34 AM Funny thing is that the 2-speed taurus fan in Rusty cooled so well that it'd bottom the gauge on low. ;)

Why not just lower the radiator to where it should be?
ChiScouter 12-09-2006, 06:30 PM Why not just lower the radiator to where it should be?
The tank on my SII rad bulged at the top where the upper hose attached, and as a result it couldn't just slide down
binderbasher 12-09-2006, 06:46 PM Lower the shroud with some solid brackets.
