: diff carrier bearing removal - help
hey all
in the process of regearing my axles. pulled the carriers and trying to get the bearings off. tried using a small bearing separator, but didn't work as there's no place for the bolt to bottom out on. tried using a 2 jaw puller, but it keeps popping off as soon as i torque it down or it goes off center. do i have to use a hyrdaulic press to remove these? i know i have to use one to install the new ones.
thanks,
chris
chadl 05-09-2002, 05:35 AM I don't know how small your splitter is, but mine seems to work find, I assume we are talking about the same thing, two halves that bolt together, and when the bolts are tightened down, the knife edges push the bearing race up? Last night, I was trying to get the old bearings off of a detroit, but when I tightened down, the splitter wasn't getting the right "bite" so I got it tightened down, and then used a 3-jaws puller on the splitter, and that pulled the bearing off just fine, you might try that.

Chad-
I tried that with a cheapo from harbor frieght, but it didn't work very good. Actually didn't budge the bearing at all. I have just ordered up a larger separator and hydraulic press, so we'll see about that. I've also tried a large 2 jaw puller (large as I could get to fit into the groves in the casting) and no such luck. I torque it down and then it just pops off, like the claws aren't getting a good bite. I even went as far as dremmelin' two more reliefs in the casting so I can use my 3 jaw puller, and even that didn't work!
I'm about ready to toss this thing. This is holding up my axle rebuild to get my chassis rolling after 2 years...

TJBob 05-10-2002, 09:28 AM Try this Search, this was just discussed last week. (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=52019) :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :mad3: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: You put the "new" in newbie
GaJeep94YJ 05-10-2002, 11:47 AM I used the same bearing seperator from harbor frieght. if you get a flat piece of metal like from a cutout of a hole saw and place of the hole that the axle goes through it will give you a place to reast the bolt to turn it off slowly. it worked well enought that I didn't even mess up the bearings when I changed it.

I did a search jackass, and that's why the question was asked. The search came up emtpy...
speaking of newbie...:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:  :mad3:

Separator or puller? I have tried the puller only and it did not work. :mad3: I have ordered the separator and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive. I hope I can get it to take them off. The other trick I was told was to cut off the roller bearing cage, remove it and the roller bearings, use a cutting disc and cut one side as much as possible, but without cutting into the casting, then heat the opposing end with torches, and then smack the cut end with a cold chisel. This should split the cut end and allow for enough relief to pull the race off. The heat on the opposing end allows for the race to open up slightly.

TJBob 05-11-2002, 02:44 PM Did my link not work? Or is it that you cannot read? :flipoff2: :flipoff2: The link that I posted is another thread. Read it and check the other links. I posted a way to do it with a "Slide Hammer" and "Bearing separator". There were several others that posted other solutions.
READ THE FAWKING OTHER THREAD!!! I DID the search for you.:mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Are you seriously thinking about cutting that bearing off? Did I read that correctly? WOW!! I dare say that you may be the 1st to try that.
Slagburn 05-11-2002, 04:33 PM The first to cut a bearing off? I highly doubt it. I've done it a couple of times but only when lacking the correct tools to do it the easy way. I usually don't use a torch on the piece being removed, though.
Here's a redneck way that works on some carriers, not all. You'll need an old wheel with the center hole big enough to pass the middle of the carrier through. Run the case through it and tighten down the bearing separator, let it down on the wheel. Space the wheel and carrier off the ground as needed with wood blocks and put a bunch of blankets, rags, whatever... padding underneath. Get a socket that fits just inside the bearing and go to town with the BFH.
Redneck, but it works. Probably done that on about 6 bearings now. No press yet. :rasta:

I think I can't read. My apologise...I didn't even pick up on it being a link to another thread...I though you were only underlining the text to yell at me... :D :D
I checked it out and it offered lots of suggestions. I'm waiting for some tools to arrive and then I'll give it another workout.
Thanks,
Chris
BossBuilt 05-11-2002, 07:37 PM I've tourched them off before and it worked, but it's pretty risky you need to becareful not to burn through.... the Puller you need is about $200 or so and has a clamping device that will keep it from popping off and is made of hardend steel.
You can buy it at an industrial bearing store... They are usually open 8-5 week days...oh and they will have your bearings and seals in stock too.
Did you try the Auto Zone?..saw your comment in the other thread.
yea, tried the zone. their 2 & 3 jaw pullers are from China, and the hooks barely fit into the reliefs in the casting and as such, the hooks barely caught on the bearing race. so when I torque the mother down, it just kept popping off.

BossBuilt 05-12-2002, 09:54 AM Those Bastards...I never went there for tools just caught their advertising...I guess there afraid to get the good tools and lone them out..:D
Well I have another set of axles about due for bearings and my tool..I mean my friend with the puller has moved, I didn't like tourching the bearings off.
so I think I'll be adding to my tool collection, Just hate letting the $$ go...Maybe I'll find one at a pawn shop before then....let us know what worked for you.. 20 ton press, BFH or whatever.
