How are you guys installing these rockstomper hinges. Got mine from the UPS guy last night and my original idea won't work. I was going to run a hole saw through my 2X4 bumper and weld the top and the bottom. The problem is that the weldable areas is only 3.5 inches

Any suggestions here. It just doesn't seem like it will be strong enough if I am only able to weld one side.

any body have pictures.

thanks

I welded some plate to teh bottom of the inside of the 2x4, so the bottom of the shaft had something to attach to. It works great...not ideal, but it never failed..even with a lot of weight and quite a bit of trail abuse.

If thats what you were asking for:confused:

My bumper is .25" so I was able to weld the top, inside top and up both sides inside the tube. Mine isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I actually talked to Scott once to see if I could special order some that were slightly longer just to overcome this issue, I really wanted it plug welded at the bottom.

He can't special order them because they are std trailer axles that Northern tool sells.

On the ones I make and used that same hinge, weld a piece of 1/4 angle iron inside of the 2x4 rect tube so the hinge sits on top of it, like a shelf, then weld the hell out of it, top bottom and up both sides. Works fine.

Can you do something like this, should give you plenty of area to weld to.

Good to know im not the only one but the problem I will have is my bumper is all sealed up. I was thinking of doing it the way jdjanda showed. Does this look ok to everybody.

What about drilling and tapping the bottom of the hing and bolting this through the bottom the 2X4 and welding the top. Could probably use like a 7/16" grade 8 and still have lots of material. It would only have to jump a .25 inch gap or so. Does that make sense.

keep it coming

hey arndog, here are some that I just took from my dad's cruzah. we made the rack and all. Not quite complete, but it will work nicely. Sorry, computer crashed not to long ago, so I don't have photoshop anymore to resize, so I will just keep them on my friends server. Hope this helps.

I did mine just like jdjanda mentioned, gave a full circle weld at top, two down the sides and half at that bottom. Then I put a piece of tube to match the top part of the hinge and welded that to the bumper and the shaft as a bonus.

Occasionally, we slide a chunk of 1.5" 0.120 tube over the hinge spindle to make it long enough to go through 2x6 or similar. Weld the spindle to the tube, then the tube to the bumper.
