I called FS today and they claim it is open to Millionaire Camp and you must walk from there. How far is the Camp from Icehouse Road? I don't want to drive up there if I can only run 1 mile of trail.

Thx.

The camp is less than 1 mile in and it could be driven to in a honda civic.

Damn...we're running out of trails. Is there another trail similar to Bassi that is within a couple of hours of Sacramento?

I need some suggestions. I'm pissed about Bassi and even more pissed about how trashed the place got.

I thought it was closed due to change of ownership or that it was being leased not being closed just to keep us out.

The biggest problem according to the Forest Service, was trail proliferation (erosion). Now can you see why it is important to stay on the trail?

There are a lot of little things that lead to trail closures, one of them are the people who buy a new truck or urban assault vehicle with an "off road package" and think they're trail ready. They do a lot of damage due to an improperly equipped vehicle and lack of experience. I spent 2 hours pulling a guy out of the snow in his stock f150, not aired down, off road equipped truck. He thought he could make it six miles through 3 feet of powder. Really, we don't need to start pointing fingers, that's easy to do. If you see someone being an ass, enlighten them, if you see trash on the trail, pick it up. I hope that when I have kids, I'll still have places to take them. If you like a trail, do as much as you can to keep it from being closed.

The reason that the trail was closed is that the falls are private property and the absentee owner just found how it was being used and was worried about libilty issues!! I also think the way that it is always trashed had a lot to do with it.

The land at Bassi falls was owned by SPI they traded the USFS for another spot of land somewhere else in the woods. Bassi was to expensive to log so they traded it away for a better peice of land that was cheaper to log and also scored some points with the USFS and the eco-freaks.It is to bad glad I got to there a few times

ya i to believe that the stupid ass people that go there because there rig seams to be a "off roader" and they can't pick up there mess. last time i was up there there was a dumb ass guy in a stock 4runner that was drunk as hell just running over shit and geting hung up on the stumps that were be side the trail. :shaking: and you all wonder why it happened. it was the first trail that i took my truck on too, but i had a detriot locker in the rear so i din't fawk shit up like a stock truck could/would

You live this close and REALLY think that? Holy cripes- the whole area around bassi was recently and is still being logged.

Look at any map, and you will stand corrected- it IS public land (usfs) Although you do have to travel over private land to get there.

Based upon what the forest service told me (which I posted above), you are correct. The land at the falls is forect service, but you must cross private land to get there.

I am expecting to hear more from the person assigned to that area from the forest service. When I find out more, I will post it.

1) Some property is owned by Van Vleck family (sp?)

2)They (the family, usfs, eco's) wanted it closed for rehab, due to many factors posted on this board.

3)They closed it, then decided to logg it just durring and after its closure for $$$. And, after it has been logged the trail will need even longer time for rehab of being logged.

You no what the trail is closed for a good reason. Its really no one fault. though I have driven up To loon 3 times already in 2 weeks and there is a datsun pickup with a insane body lift and the bottoms of the bed cut off. With no wheels and it has been beat to hell. Lookin at the vehicle it looks like the last owners buddy was a toyota driver. It had similar tricks done to it that we would use on our own vehicles. except the ifs was still there. So you kow that someone either on this board or someone up on the con this year nows who ditched it there. The forest service i'm sure is pissed about that. There is pretty much the same thing farther up icehouse roadJust before robbs is a toyota that has been sitting there for two years. Its been rolled bad and stripped to the bone then left there. Obviously vehicles were both bought without transfers to their names and a are not stolen because the El dorado county sheriff has not had them towed off. but still if they want to shut down a trail for improving what should be restored (and no one forced them to do it any way) They should do it. They will never close the Rubicon for no reason . Especially if its a historic highway and large companies like daimler chrysler support runs on the trail. By the way has anyone asked for support from daimler-chrysler to support the rubicon against law suits. The have tons of money and a lot of there ceos and even the dealerships owners know and love their products.

Dave is the best guy to talk to about Bassi. I was speaking to Lester Lubetkin (USFS out of Placerville), and her relayed the info to me.

I'm not talking about keeping the con open. there are several other reasons to close that trail besides car dumping on bassi . The ownership change. If you like the trail so much hike it, if you want to go wheelin go the extra 10 miles up the road and wheel at rubicon. or go up 80 and wheel fordyce. Fawk bassi let them restore that area. Its not a win for the tree huggers, its just a decision the forest service or whoever bought it made. There reason for closing bassi has nothing to do with open difs or leaving trash.

Dang yellow your getting all bent. You sound like my babys momma "what do you mean I'm gettin' phat?"

Are you sure your on the right site here? Your actually in favor of closing a great wheeling and camp site? Wanting to hike in? Don't you think enough places have been closed? It ain't the same to me to watch it on the discovery channel.

So why don't you go against the forest service to keep it open. Turn the forest service against us and make them close down more trails to clean up the environment. OOOOHHH that would be great woudn't it I built my 81 toy for no reason. Don't get pissed at me I didn't close the fawkin trail. I help to keep trails open my own way by hauling out more than I take in and staying on the Trail, And not posting picks with My trail reports. Thats all I can do to help Keep trails open because I'm not disabled I do not get checks in the mail for cutting off my unit(or whatever your case is).I have to work my arse off for my money and cannot afford the extra effort to keep trails open. I'm not happy they closed the trail, they just made a decision that THEY (not me) thought would do that area good. hold on let me get a job with the forest service so you can blame me for the trail closing.:flipoff2:

No wheeler has an excuse not to pitch in a few bucks a year to keep our trails open. How about setting aside the same amount that you spend on beer for a weekend?

If you don't, you might as well drink you beer in the mall parking lot because the green's agenda is to eliminate OHV access on public land. Can you hear me now? :flipoff:

arguing with you is counterproductive so this will be my last post regarding this, as I have more important issues that require my time. I just want to clear a few things up...

I'm not pissed at you for closing the trail as I realize you had nothing to do with it - positive or negative, as it was out of your hands

It's great that you haul out trash and stay on the trail - we all do - but thats not all you can do, and unfortunately it's not enough to keep the trails open. If you think thats truly all you can do, then continue to do it as it's positively better than nothing and helps out a lot.

just a quick bit of background on me, since you assumed completely wrong. I was working 70+ hours a week when I got hit on my motorcycle on the street. I got a compound tib/fib on my right leg, shattered my right ankle and messed up my leaft ankle pretty bad. I got disability checks for one year. I was out of work for almost 2 more years after that with no income. I do not collect checks for anything. I had to file BK, and am now working my ass of 6 days a week to try to get back in the green. For the past 3 years of hard times, I never once let my BRC, Ca4WDC, NRA, CCKBA, and my local clubs dues lapse. I've been hard pressed and know it is possible to do what you need to do to get what you want. I've always worked my ass of when I needed something and do not have anything I haven't earned.

I'm sooooooo tired of hearing the "I can't afford it" or "I don't have time" excuses...If you feel that way then fine - stay the fawk outta the way of those that are willing to make a few sacrifices to make a difference...

and like I said earlier, I'm not pissed at you for this closure - just your attitude presented earlier...

Well I'm not using it for an excuse not to donate or not to put time from my life into keeping our trails.I was there helping to keep the rubicon open. I was at the meeting with randii and 500 hors at the mountain mikes in shingle springs or where ever it was. I was there for the rally at the comm center in auburn I sign as many petitions as I can against trail closure and do donate what I can money or time. And for sure if there was a way to keep Bassi open I would participate to the best of my abilities. I just have to go around my work hours especially now when the company i work for hasn't been able to have me around for the last 5 weeks and I have been working at another shop under the table just to pay my bills and keep my wheeler/daily driver on the road and with a kid on the way it's extra hard. I'm only 23 And do the best I can. I'm sorry about your accident and only meant it as an example that you have more time to devote into these issues that I wish I could spend more time dealing with. They aren't doing any more than they already have. It is hiking access for anything past the first hill climb on the lower road.

I must say I feel this closure is a TOTAL CROCK OF SHIT. Bassi falls and surrounding areas is now a VERY popular hangout for very disrespectful dirt bikers and ATV'ers from what I have seen. There seems to be NO enforcement of the closure. It seems to me to be a goddamn safe haven for them. I have been there a few times now since the closure and every time there has been 5 and 6 trailers and more trucks plugging up the parking area and riding around like flies on shit. Roosting up the hill sides- right past the signs declaring "NO ohv or motorized vehicles". I have tried to take my daughter for a walk there and fear for her safety since none of the riders even slowed down when passing us on the (hiking) trail.  :flipoff:
