Looking for those with experience here in CO.
My current thoughts:
GY MTR
SSR
TSL radial

Don't want bias ply.

Thanks

I don't have experience in CO but I think some of the conditions up here in AK are similar. I had a set of 37x12.5x16 radial Iroks and I really liked them. They grabbed the trail very well and handled good on the street. When my RRC is ready I think that's the tire I'm going to put on it first.

37 foot tall tires won't fit without trimming.

Or a custom body lift.

I run Goodyear's. Good traction and wear. If you wanted the ultimate, BFG Krawlers all the way.

I fit some 36' tall tires on a Series truck with some big lift blocks but the 4.7 gears broke all the time so I had to fit Dana 80's

had to let the air out to get in the garage and most tire shops won't balance a tire that tall, citing that it will tear up the machine...
:D

Daily driver+ Off road = MTR siped
Off road only - Krawler

I've had both the swampers and they are nice tires but wear quickly and aren't a lot of fun on wet hard surfaces or snow.. IMO

Ran 35" TSL Radials on my DSII & absolutely loved them.

Ran 37" TSL Radials on my '79 Ford & absolutely loved them.

Both rigs had lots of highway miles & lots of Colorado trails (from Black Bear to Red Cone to Longwater to Slaughterhouse to 29 Road). Great snow performance and trail use.

Definately believe in tall & skinny for Colorado. 35's were 10.5 on 15x8s. 37's were 12.5 on 15x8s.

Current project has 42" Iroks, simply due to the sidebiters & a lot less road time.

If you want agressive thread on tall tires that drive well on the street and good wear I suggest military Michelins in the thread pattern of your choice. 9.00x16 / 255x100-16's are 36"+ true and steel radial. Fits nicely on Wolf wheels and most cops won't figure that you're oversize because the proportions look right.

Anyone have any experience and or opinions on Mickey Thompson Claws? I see some people running them and I am looking for some new meat for the 90. I have BFG Mt's now and suffered two sidewall punctures last time out, so I would not recomend them.

But the Claws are interesting to me and seem like they would do pretty well.

Any thoughts or are Goodyears the way to go for a daily driver/mud/crawling tire?

The only time I have ever seen these was on Prichette Canyon in Moab. They wouldn't hook up for anything on the slickrock. It could of been any number of things causing it, but my Goodyears MT/R's had way less trouble.

That said, there are a number of people who run them on Pirate and probably have an opinion about it.

For a Daily Driver I would just go with the MT/R's from Goodyear. They wear pretty good and are excellent off-road.

I think "Colorado Scott" is running these in 35x1250, but I haven't seen him on the board in awhile...

I have the MTR's on my Bronco I would go with them for a solid rock tire I have yet to use them in the snow but in the mud and dirt they leave a bit to be desired.

I think it depends most on how much road driving you are going to do. My good friend had 35in Claws on his TJ for about 6 months and hated them so much he sold them for a huge loss and got Krawlers. That was a towed Jeep. I wouldn't even think about the Claws.

If it were mine and I spent a majority of time on the road it would be MT/R's. They are the best on road tire that I have ever run on a wheeler. But, the 37's are closer to a 35 in size and they are definenitely have thier limitations offroad. I never noticed how lacking the MT/R's were in the rocks untill I got the Iroks.

If your almost all trail and just drive to and from, I would go Radial Iroks all the way. IMHO they are the best rock tire out there except for the Krawler. And you can't beat the price. The 37 measures a true 37. They are loud but handle very well on the road. I don't have enough time on the road to judge wear, but they *look* like they would wear quickly.

I had GY MTR's in VA and they sucked in the mud and snow. My truck sees a commute of about 10 minutes and the rest of the time it is in the garage or on the trails.

Anyone have any experience with the SSR? I'm looking for a tire that is good in MOAB and other CO trails. Sidewall strength is very important.

thanks

If your rig sees that little road time, why not bias ply Iroks? That's my plan.

It's just too cold up here at an elevation of 8150. I don't think that bias tires would ever run round.

I thought about iroks but they always seem to get chewed up pretty quickly.

I just need to make a decision and be done with it.

if sidewall strength is high on your list, forget the SSR. It's one thing to put a hole in the sidewall that you could plug, its another to put one the size of your head.

I saw the tread about 1 day wheeling and an Irok being all torn up. It may have happened, but I doubt very much it is the norm. I have wheeled hard with mine and they still look very good. The rocks where I typically wheel are sharper than most too, and I have the Bias ply's.

I run MT/Rs down here in Oz and as an all-rounder, they are excellent.

Stay away from Radial Claws. The side wall strength is pathetic.

I like the Krawler, too.

Too small, too expensive. I will not pay more than $300 a tire when I go through them like I do. Also, I don't want to go to a 17inch rim.

I know you don't want a bias ply...but maybe the Creepy Crawler in 37" would be good?

I ran the 37/12.5/16 on and off-road for over a year and the wear rate was fine. They are strong in the sidewalls and offer bucket loads of grip in all terrain.
