: Anyone up for a Wilderness Area protest rally?

It is a go. Thursday, July 11, 2002 .

Several of us have been tossing ideas around on the FOTR email list. I thought more input would help.

The greenies have used protest rally's to their benefit, so it was suggested that we could do the same thing to protest against land closures. I suggested that we pick a date this Summer, and converge on Senator Boxer's offices throught the state and hand over the signatures from the online petition to oppose more Wilderness Areas (http://www.petitiononline.com/boxer/petition.html). Boxer has offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno and San Bernadino. Since there are multiple locations, we should be able to get more people to participate without driving a bunch of hours. This could also help us gain more newspaper & TV coverage from multiple markets.

How many of you would give up a few hours to make it happen? Would it have to be on a weekend, or could it be on a weekday? Would any of you be willing to head up the effort for an area outside of Sacramento?

Thanks for the input.

Sacramento is handled, so I'm willing drive -- and it can be a weekday. I work so that I can 'wheel. With all the closure going on, skipping work to protect my primary priority, wheeling, makes a helluvalot of sense.

I'll be there! I'll help in anyway I can if you need it Crowdog.

But it's funny you mention this, I have been thinking the same thing. Just not sure how to come out of the closet with it LOL. It could be very effective if we were to get the media coverage. But I would think that we NEED people like Crowdog, randii and yellowsub who can fawkin lay the smack down in a intelligent manner when the media shows up.

I've had another idea along the same lines, could be a little more controversal though. I'm sure you've all heard of the greenie anti motorized vehicle group called 'critical mass'? Their approach pisses people off, but it's effective. They'll pick the worst time possible to ride their bizzillion bikes down a major street or highway like the golden gate bridge at 5pm on a friday.

what ya think? street legal wheelers following all the trailer trash on their trailers? :flipoff2:

I'm in for as many as I can get to...

should we set them up all on the same day and same time (synchronized hand ins) or something...like for publicity....or just start south to north (or north to south) and deliver them in a set order over the couse of 2 days or something so whoever wants to can make a "journey" out of it can follow the "train" or something....just thinking outloud....

can we also turn in a letter asking for her resignation, I'll personally hand it to her :D

We've been talking about alot of things. One thing we came up with is information. Instead of a bunch of dood's just standing around their rigs, we need maps showing how much land is actually going to be stolen. Talks on tread lightly. Statistics that are real instead of the ones the greens fabricate. Picutre books of cleanups and trail maintenance etc etc. Public involvement is key. Anything intellegent we can get in the media would be crucial.

Anyone wanting to put together a photo album, or make a map showing the areas in CA that are being stolen, now would be a good time to get awn that. I'm going to work on statistics. Thanks!

We need to quickly decide on weekday or weekend.

There has been some discussion that it would be more newsworthy if it is done on a weekday. If it is on a weekday, it is important that we have a good turnout, and that everyone brings the kids.

Please reply with which you can do.

About 14 million acres in California, roughly 14 percent of its total land base, is already designated wilderness, off-limits to motorized vehicles, bicycles, horse-back riding, grazing, logging, mining, oil drilling and other forms of commercial development.

Boxer wants to add another 2.5 million acres to that!

I'll be more than happy to to make a high speed run to Sac if you think the presence of "out-of state" people will help. After all, Boxer doesn't give a shit about us 'cause we don't vote for her. I'm sure I can get at least part of the the Georgetown side of the family to show up.

I know that some of the folks would have trouble getting out of work, etc. but a weekday protest would be a hell of a lot more effective in terms of media and public exposure.

TJ Chick:

You can do more from anywhere in the country!

Send a letter to your Senators and Representative in Congress and tell them to oppose Senator Boxer's Wilderness Bill. This may affect California, any wilderness area designations go through US Congress.

You can also write the Tuolumne Co supervisors and tell them to oppose any new wilderness areas in their county.

Thanks,

At each main location where a protest rally will occur, the following positions need to be filled:

Press/Media Leader - Make contacts with the media. Send out press release(s), etc. to get them hooked on covering the event. Coordinate with the media during the day of the event so they know who amongst us to interview. If we are successful at multiple locations, we need local leaders to coordinate press releases across the state.

Liaison Leader - Make contact with anyone we're going to meet (Doolittle, Boxer's office, State Capitol, Highway Patrol) and find out if we need any permits to gather, parade, etc. Also coordinate with any organizations/people that will be speaking at the event.

Facilities Leader - Scout out the proposed route and meeting area and coordinate any issues with regards to gathering on private property (parking lots, etc.). Also coordinate communications and scouting on the day of the event.

Participation Leader - We need to get the word out to clubs & shops (motorcycle, 4x4, etc.). Coordinate flyer with press/media leader.

This list is a "work in progress". I am sure that many other needs will arise. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions.

If you are interested in helping, please send me an email.

I will get some flyers going in the next week. Thanks for offering to distribute.

Del & I have been working on a press release (http://www.crowley-offroad.com/public_land_for_public_use_rally_press_release.htm ) that we can use to alert the media about the event. It is still under construction at this time, but take a look and provide feedback.

The other way to get the word out is via editorials. Send something in to oppose Boxer's plan, and mention the rally & petition. It's free....

Public Land for Public Use Protest Rally
Thursday, July 11, 2002

Do YOU enjoy recreating in the outdoors? If so please attend.

About 14 million acres in California, roughly 14 percent of its total land base, is already designated wilderness, off-limits to motorized vehicles, bicycles, horse-back riding, grazing, logging, mining, oil drilling and other forms of commercial development. Senator Barbra Boxer wants to add another 2.5 million acres to that! We're going to speak up and be heard.
Main event will be held in Sacramento, CA

Our Message
* Oppose Senator Boxer's Wilderness Bill *
* Reform the Endangered Species Act *
Support responsible multiple-use on public lands
Support BlueRibbon Coalition's Backcountry concept
Support Congressman Doolittle's 'Wilderness Study Area Release Act' (HR 4589)
We will depart for the Sacramento Capitol at 12:00 Noon sharp and proceed to circle the Capitol in a very slow manner. After circling the Capitol, we will drive to Senator Boxer's office to hand over the petition to oppose more Wilderness Area designations.
Wilderness Area designation excludes mechanical access, so this means if you rely on bicycles, horses, 4wd, or ANY mechanized means of travel, THIS AFFECTS YOU.
Please bring your family, Please sign the online petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/boxer/petition.html and please go here for questions: http://www.crowley-offroad.com/protest_rally.htm

It loses alot in the transformation from word to here!! Flyers can be handed out and left at any outdoor activity store or gathering area. ie: bicycle shops, tack and feed stores, dirt bike retailers, sporting goods stores etc........
