I am in the market for one soon and i want one that will be able to like 1/8 inch 4130 plate for like cystom made tabs and brackets. i know its rated at .12 gauge mild steel whicj is a little thinner than 1/8. but arent these rated at the entire width of the brake. so it is really rated to do a 51 inch bend in 12 gauge (.109) mild steel. But do you think it will do like 3-4 inches if 1/8 4130 plate? i dont want to start breaking the fingers off the brake. I will also use this for thin aluminum body panels.

It will probably be OK with 1/8, but you might deform the ends of the fingers a bit over time. I had some nicks in the fingers on one I had from bending thicker stock in it. Even on a big press brake, say a 200 ton 10' unit, you still can not exceed the maximum tonnage per inch of the brake, which would be around 2.8 tons per inch.

Look at buying a lighter 4' box & pan brake, 16 gauge for sheet aluminum. You can save about quite a bit, then use that money to buy a nice 30 ton press and a small 4" wide press brake.
