: exhaust...its like pulling teeth!
Chrisjeep7 05-09-2002, 01:41 PM OK i have call every muffler shop in town and they wont do my "79" Cj-7 with no cats. i was wondering if i could just get one of thoes cheap kits outa a mag for the manifold to converter, and then just stick on a set of muffs and down pipes and call it done? i have an auto so i dont know if this will fly and cherokee manifolds on my 360...any good ideas?
also what is a good sounding quiet muff that is a good price, i dont want flowmasters.

oldmanscj7 05-09-2002, 02:23 PM Go to the smallest most rundown muffler shop in town and offer to pay cash. Either that or borrow your buddies pink and plates from his pre smog jeep, the shop won't usually check any further than that. Not that I have ever done this before or anything.
jeepnmatt 05-09-2002, 02:30 PM http://www.4x4wire.com/4x4/tech/josh4x4/exhaust/
call these guys and see if they'll bend up all the parts and ship them to ya.
or, tell the shop that you want to put the cat and on at home...that you want to save some $$$ and finish the job yourself...
pay cash! and make sure you let them know you'll be paying cash too. i used to work for a guy who always had 2 prices: cash price and check price...cash was always SIGNIFICANTLY less.
matt
Chrisjeep7 05-09-2002, 02:48 PM Hell belive it or not but i called the guy and he said give him a call back that he will see if he could put somthing together for me...hum i though he would just laugh at me!
i did the cash thing and well i got into it with this old man at the muff shop...some words were said and now i think i have been black listed...hehehe
i called a offroad muff shop and they said they would do it but that i would have to drive an hour w/ no exhaust...thats a fine wating to happen.

xBabyJesus 05-09-2002, 06:02 PM talk to the lead guy there, tell him you have cash, and don't run your mouth about it.

High5 05-09-2002, 10:46 PM i always take the tags off of mine and take it on the trailer. i tell them it is for off-road only. works for me.
Chrisjeep7 05-09-2002, 11:17 PM hahaha i tried that came in on a trailer, said it was for off road use only and he said "do you have a tag to prove it?" i said are you fuc$*@# stupid! and thats why i did not get exhaust there...i cant figure out why....hehehe

JohnC 05-10-2002, 09:52 AM Hmmmm, are you *sure* it's a '79? Maybe you're mistaken and it's really a '76 CJ-7, because '76 didn't have any cats.... I don't know if they run the plates, but I would think that if you walked into an old-school exhaust shop and told them you needed exhaust on your "1976" CJ-7 then you would be alright.
Chrisjeep7 05-10-2002, 10:39 AM yup i tried that too...and he said it had to be a 75 or older...

BossBuilt 05-10-2002, 10:34 PM Just f$ck them b$st$rds go to checker and get the parts ...90* elbows 45* elbows, straight pieces, reducers, clamps, and hangers (Omit the clamps if you have a welder) you can have some fine sounding exhaust in an evening..worked for me.....;) ..about $60...
Chrisjeep7 05-11-2002, 08:10 AM heheh i tried that with my 258 it ends up getting all shook loose and gitting beat to hell. o and i dont have a mig to make it with, and clamps just arnt my style. this is the third time i have had to put exhaust on my jeep so i want this one to be good.

payton 05-11-2002, 09:35 AM i agree cash and a lil shop is what is gonna work for u..

jeepnmatt 06-04-2002, 07:59 AM Chris G. did you ever get your exhaust finished? i'm thinking about calling Discount Muffler in Denver to send me the parts...

That's BS - the year for trucks was '78, and he should know that.
Either way, if he's the only game in town, you're fawked.
schuss 06-04-2002, 11:39 AM Actually the rule is 25 years I believe, which would make it '77.

For inspections, yes? But (some) 78s didn't come with cats.
HeyBeerMan 06-04-2002, 02:42 PM Jerk the plates. trailer it down. And tell them its off-road, competion only. And to stop flapping their lips and get to welding!
snacksnack 06-04-2002, 09:09 PM not sure on the 25 year old thing just no ive done this several times in oklahoma which is where chris is and it just has to be 78 and older which dosent matter for him anyways good luck with the shops and for the muff by the turbo ones at autozone or somewhere like that they are cheap, not loud, and have a mellow tone :rasta:
Chrisjeep7 06-04-2002, 09:23 PM no i got a flow on there. i will snap a pic of my new pipes tom.

They are wrong, my dads old 1976 CJ7 with CA smog had no CAT.
CJ5-Man 06-04-2002, 10:33 PM I've had exhaust done on my CJ 3 times and every time I shop around I have to explain to them that it never has had and never will have cat's. I love my 76 :flipoff2:
I'm about to have to get it doen a 4th time cause it won't clear the sm420 hump.
