Ever since the first issue of XOM came out and had MAD 4wd's article on building a press brake, Ive wanted to build one. Its a project that has been on the back burner forever, I got the dies machined and burned at work and just havent needed to build it until now.
Its not done and I plan on changing the jack base once I get the air/hydro jack from HF to make things a little easier. Also planning on gusseting the legs to the base and a triangle gusset the length of the top as well.

Looks more like a shop press than a press brake. Im sure you can bend plate with it though.

The brake is kind of obscured at the bottom.

My shop press will bend 3/8" plate that's 4 1/2" wide. Used it to bend the u-bolt flip kit for my rear springs on my Toy.

How wide is the brake, and what size ram are you using. With the 20 ton ram and 2 2x4 steel cross members on the top of mine, it will still flex A LOT when bending at capacity. It is a little scary, you might want to look into adding some additional bracing to help out with that.

Looks good, but I would also add a third leg under the jack base to the center of the blade to prevent the blade from deflecting there.

i think the "window" there is so you can bend "u" shapes or other shapes that the leg would otherwise hit the frame.

i wanted to build one like xom. i had that issue somewhere but doubt i could find it nowadays.

Good point. I still think the blade may deflect or bend under a heavy load. Maybe a center support that is removable?

looking at the plans linked above, the blade looks to be 2" tall and unsupported across 10". i don't think there will be much deflection bending up to 1/4" plate.

blade is 16" wide.

ITS NOT DONE!!!!

I plan on adding gusseting, I know it will still flex under heavy load. It will bend more than a 90, yes the window is so I can make 2 bends close together just like the article in the mag said.
The jack plate will be wider and be gusseted to the top bar to help spread the load, its just a peice I had that was the size the jack in the pic had so I tacked it on there. It will all get reinforced/gusseted.

I am gonna have to get around to making one of these as well. I just want to use it in my existing press though and not totaly reinvent the wheel.

Found another one similar to yours searching

If you already have a press northern tool makes a break for a press. They have different sizes for different presses:

Here is a site that has several types of press/breaks.

Havent done anymore on this but I stuck a peice of 1/4" in there with the 8 ton jack and pumped it till it was really tight and it didnt bend the 1/4" at all. I did it to find out what I have to gusset and it looks like I will need to put some I beam or some square tube under the 3/8" base and definitly something across the top. I might remake the base and get it bent to add some strength and then use some flat bar to tie the sides together(probably doesnt make much sense reading this)
