Can you send the H harness back for a Y harness?
If not I would run the uppers just as you have them, I would not double stuff the slot.

The hip belt needs to be further back, consider making the attachment point on the rear legs of the seat frame you built.

Have you driven a truck with harnesses?

I thought they were sexy until I drove AFIRover's truck...

PITA! No mobility, no visibility, he can't even reach the radio controls (but I can :flipoff2:). You'll spend a lot of time unbuckling yourself to see where you are, to look out the back window (:D ).

Might wanna reconsider your restraint options.

Yeah, that's why I left the stock safety belts for 90% of the time and the harness for the hardcore stuff where I'm to stay fully in, and romp on the gas to get the truck up...I also had to change the ARB swithces location so that I can reach them when strapped in.

To add to your queirie, I had an internal cage that sandwiches the cabin with the exo cage so that the 3 points (I have the Y belt) of the harness would be mounted in the optimal locations & to the main cage strength. PITA for sure, and lots more tubing/weight, but its worth it.

Reaching the ARB switches will not be a problem--I am placing them on the center console. As for unbuckling to see out the back window...Well, there will be no back window, or any other window for that matter, other than the windshield.

Here is my thinking behind the restraint options, tell me what you guys think.

95% of the time I will wear just the lap belt, only putting the harness on when the pucker factor demands it.

That's the way I drive now with the 3 point belt (placing the shoulder harness behind the seat). The problem is, if the vehicle is on a grade, the belt locks up and I can't pull it out enough to put the shoulder strap on. Also, if I get out with the vehicle on an angle, I can't put the belt back on at all. I hate that, and that will no longer be a problem.

I have Y harnesses in the Mog, with a single-point attach through the floor on centerline with the seat. The seats are low back units without headrests and having the shoulder belts coming over the top of the seats is perfect. I'm also running a 3" lap belt and 2" shoulder belts because I think they're more comfortable. I don't have a anti-sub - only 4 points.

I agree with PT - I only use the 4-point on serious obstacles. When pulled tight, you DON'T move - which,of course, is the idea. The shoulder belts are just long enough to drape over the seat and tuck down to both sides when not in use. They stay put and are out of the way yet can be put on when needed without getting out of the seat.

I had 4 point harneses with the exact same seat that Darkstar is using. I ended up pulling them out and putting the stock seat belt back in. I found the 4-point to be a PITA. IMHO, they are not necessary with the type of driving that we do and just become a nusance. My belt is an older style and I can take it on or off at any angle.

BTW, it is impossible to see anything when you are strapped in all the way. Not just behind you, but straight ahead too.

Alex:

The smilie after my comment was intended to reconize your lack of back window glass and most of your body. Unless you're running a buggy with expanded sheetmetal floors, there are gonna be times when you're gonna want some mobility to see around what little there may be of your truck to see an obstacle, gauge progress, or just see something cool (like a big-ass bug on some silly hippy's hat :flipoff2:). I suppose the plan of just wearing the lap belt is a good compromise and as good a way as any for me to justify putting harnesses in a rig of mine, should the opportunity arise.

Whatever you do, make sure you mount them in such a fashion that you run little to no risk of a spinal compression injury. Some of the dimensions given in the earlier discussions in general 4X4 are a little confusing and/or contradictory. With the clean slate and blank sheet of paper that you have, you have every opportunity to mount them in as close to an ideal location as anyone!

Get back to throwing sparks so all of that are living vicariously through you can get our satisfaction from watching your project progress.
