: Backspacing and Dana 60s
CWToyota 05-10-2002, 01:55 AM I have searched so get yer finger off that :mad3: button...
I am installing dana 60s Front and rear (1980's chev outers).
My plan was to run 16" wheels, but then I realized I would have only like 3 tire choices... I'm sticking with 15"... from what I gather (from my searches on this site and others) I can run up to 4-1/2" backspacing... Ok so I need to find some wheels... 8 lug 15x8 with 4"+ of backspacing... I called 4wheel parts wholesalers and they qouted two sets (thats 8 wheels) 15x8 whitespokes with 8 lug pattern and 4-1/4" backspacing shipped for $403.19 will their wheels work... it sounds like some wheels will work and some will not.. has anyone else used their wheels?
or where did you get your 8 lug 15" wheels, and how much were they?
Aggro 05-10-2002, 06:39 AM steel is easier to run than aluminum due to the amount of grinding involved, and to run 4+" of BS be prepared to grind A LOT.
You are going to have to grind on your calipers to fit a standard off the shelf 15" wheel. There are other companies who sell 10" rims with 3.5" of backspacing. I am not too sure how much backspacing in standard on an 8" wheel. Why do you want to run 8" wheels anyway? It seems that if you are going to run D60s, you are going to run some big tires.
The Rockslut 05-10-2002, 08:34 AM Summit sells like 4 or 5 different 15x8 or 15 x10 8 lug wheels with 4" bs. I wouldnt run more than 3.5" IMO. I have a GM front 60 with 3.5" bs with minimal grinding. Anymore backspacing is getting into the caliper pretty heavy.
bigdude 05-10-2002, 08:55 AM I wouldnt run more than 3.5" IMO

Better search again. :flipoff2:
Some info on this went through a few days ago. :rasta:
Butch 05-10-2002, 09:41 AM Jim Lyon at Trudesign Wheel here in Denver did my 15x8's with 3.5 back spacing front and 2 rear to line up the axle width. I had to grind quite a bit even with 3.5 4+ will not work with chevy calipers. his # 1-800-621-6436 $78 bucks a piece powder coated your choice of color. :rasta:

8 inch wheels RULE! I run 38.5 x 14.5 SXs on 15 x 8s with 4ish inches of backspacing. The narrow wheels help keep the tire on the bead and the tire bulge helps keep the rims out of the rocks. They work grrrrrrreat! Also, I run full width axles, but I don't want to be stupid wide, and just running ten inch rims rather than eights (assuming the same backspacing) would bump me from 83 inches wide (just fits on a standard trailer), to 87 inches wide (too wide for my trailer, and way too wide to avoid the cones).
I can understand that and I agree.

Do you carry a spare? 2" backspacing? Just curious, I thought about different backspacing front and rear on mine, but wanted to keep the wheels all the same. I don't have a spare anyway, in the unlikely event that I tear an SX I carry lots of plugs.:D
Butch 05-10-2002, 07:20 PM I dont carry a spare. I intend to beadlock soon and then it will be wire and an inner tube for spare. My hog is heavy enough without adding 120lbs of spare. If I did carry a spare it would be 3.5 backspacing cause the rear has disk on the 14 and would clear just fine. I would even entertain a 16" spare as I only went with 15's cause my 38 TSL's were 15's and I was not going to cough up the dough for new ones when I went one ton. Knock on wood I have only blown one tire wheeling and it was dryrotted enough that you could probably stick your finger through it with some effort.

...Yes you can run 4 + backspacing with chevy calipers. My s10 uses MRT 15x10 beadlocks with 4 1/8 backspacing and my willys runs 15+10 with 4 1/2..I have done it on both my trucks with chevy calipers..Just be prepared for a lot of grinding as someone else has mentioned...and the calipers have been ground for nearly 10 years on my willys with no problems..Just another .02:D

This is the only way to go. You don't have to be a genius to know you shouldn't grinding on a brake caliper.
SHERPA 05-12-2002, 07:02 AM I don't see how anything much-more than 3.5 BS will work. I have
a 3.25 BS rim that touches already, and the wheel-lug surface is
not flush yet....... I dunno about more than 3.5"........................

CWToyota 05-13-2002, 11:25 AM Thank you everyone for the suggestions/opinions/info. I guess I will try the 3.5" BS... I don't mind a ton of grinding, as long as my calipers are not left paper thin... I took some measurements, and 3.5 seems to look the best.
I am looking for 15x8 wheels because for now, they will help hold the tires on (I am very abusive to my rigs) but this summer I would like to install a set of the rockstomper beadlocks... they turn an 8" rim into about 9-10" wide, so they will be perfect.
The reason I want the backspacing is that I am going full width on a toyota and I don't want to be outragiously wide (Washington trails are tight).
Thanks Everyone.
4x4realm 05-13-2002, 11:37 AM Here's a pic of Team x-tream's toy with 60 front 70 rear full with 2.5 bs 15X10 44" boggers. And there was no grinding of the calipers Front or rear
4x4realm 05-13-2002, 11:39 AM here's another.
4x4realm 05-13-2002, 11:42 AM 2 in wider vs. grinding the calipers. :smokin:
Another thing to keep in mind is with 3.5 bs if you upgrade to rear disk you will have clearence problems w/ the rear disks also. If your going to do beadlocks go with 16.5's if your worried about clearance.
CWToyota 05-13-2002, 11:56 PM If I was going to run 16.5" wheels, I would have to install beadlocks on both sides of the wheel, I have a set of tires on 16.5" on another rig and I frequently pop them off the bead (both inner and outer) they are getting screwed on before my next trail run... I wanted 16" but there is very limited tire selection with them... so I guess I'm stuck with 15"... If I have to I will adapt toyota spindles, hubs, rotors, and calipers to the outers of my dana 60 to make 15" wheels fit correctly, the toyota hubs have the 30 spline, while the pitch is different, they fit over a dana 60 stub shaft without any re-cutting.
I think I'll just break out my BIG 8" grinder and go to town on the calipers and make 3.5 BS or 4.5 BS work.
