OK I know someone is going to laugh bu thtis is my only option I am buying an Exploder out of state and have to tow it about 200 miles to my house could I do it with a tow dolly with my Ranger I have 3.73 gears with a 4.0L 5spd it is either that or I don't get it or else I could use a smallish flatbed trailer that does have brakes but that would just be more weight though

Yes, you can do it. Just take it nice and easy and leave yourself PLENTY of room for stopping. I bumper towed a buddies 77 F250 about 100 miles once with my old Nissan frontier 5 speed so it can be done.

flat tow...tow dollys will make that bitch push that ranger ALL OVER the road...and get about 300lbs of weight in the back of that ranger..it makes all the diffrence in the world..otherwise the sploder will push you around..

I doubt a rental yard will rent you the tow dolly... and if one does... they shouldn't!

that 5,000lb exploder behind you will be heavier than you think! ;)

So... you don't know anyone you can bribe to tow it for you? what about asking in the hauling section on here?

If you tell them you are towing a 1988 Honda Civic they will rent you the tow dolly behind the Ranger ..... :flipoff2:

Where in PA do you live? IF you're closeby I'd do it for you...

I don't think that little xploder will be pushing much of my 8,300 lbs around... ;) :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I live near Pittsburgh wat about you the Exploder I am looking at is in Walkersville MD but there is also another one cheap in PA When I got my Ranger last year I rented a tow dolly behind my dad's jeep and told them I was towing a Saturn but yeah it was kinda shaky I just figured if I took it slow and watched I could do it and everybody who has a big truck that I know doesn't wanna help so I am stuck I guess Maybe I could just limp the Exploder home by it's own power but I would then have to get insurance on it I think

wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just have some one drive you to the exploder and you drive it back, or does it not run?

IMHO you'd be better off towing the ranger with the Explorer on a tow dolly, or borrow any other small night vehicle with a hitch just to tow the dolly up there and then put the small car on the dolly behind the Explorer.

Check your insurance company - Many of them will cover you for a short period when you buy vehicle before you can get it to them to get insured.

My first tow rig was a ranger 4.0 with 5 speed. Back in 94 I towed my jeep a few hundred miles on several occasions and even towed a 6900 lb tractor about 400 miles (in the middle of the night when roads where empty).

I doubt an explorer weighs 5000 lbs. My 01 F150 extended weighed 4450 verified.

You'll be fine.

I remember the first time I ever saw anyone tow anything with a Ranger. He was pulling a derby car on a brakeless trailer. Pulled into the gas station, locked up his brakes, and went right out the other side of the station w/o ever slowing down

I assume that F-150 was a 2WD, V-6 ?

My 02 Dakota 4WD QC weighed in at 4850, empty... I would think the explorer would at least 4500......
I havent towed with a dolly, but I flat towed a CJ with a Landrover, curves in the road were very interesting... it wanted to push the discovery off the road... I only towed it 30 miles, wouldnt want to think of 200 miles of that..

Well if I didn't have the manual I wouldn't even consider it but I usually just downshift while braking it helps a lt but then again the most I ever towed was about 4500 lbs of gravel well 3500 lbs of gravel and 1000lbs trailer without brakes it stopped fine and had plenty of power just wasn't a speed demon

Get a trailer with brakes on both axles. If you need to make an egmergency stop or it starts raining you will be thankful!

Well how much does a trailer weigh with brakes on it that would probably put me over my towing capacity since my manual says that it is 6,600 lbs
