coachgeo
05-10-2002, 10:22 AM
no real camper conversion going on here.... unless u call pillows and some cabinets a camper conversion. The black boxes look to be original military radio boxes that came in the box. ohhhh.. for u non moggers. the back of this thing that is being converted is called a radio box. It once held a portable communications system.

Hey, is that a pass-through to the cab? Is that sealed? If so, how did they do that since the cab and box need to move independently for a mog to flex properly?

How do you get the spare tire up on the roof  dam thats high !http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=550394

Use it to tow the Jeep.

coachgeo
05-10-2002, 06:29 PM
U say tow the jeep..

boyyyy have I been trying to figure that out... butttt... these things are more TRACTOR than they are anything else.. it will tow a mountain... but only at 1 mph.... it wont tow a jeep at comfortable HWY speeds... and this one has the cats meow engine trainsplant and one of the better transmision up grades... It wont tow the jeep.. unless I drive 15mph on the back roads.. and nooooooooooo.. Im not going to do that.

Very cool and a fair price. What engine are you thinking about swapping in? Seems like the perfect candidate for a 5.9 cummins if you can get it mounted up to the tranny and get it to fit.

Hey peabody, it already has a 3.0 mercades 5 cylinder turbo diesel.

Well thats the mindset I went in with when looking at mogs but it dont work that way.. and this one has the best engine transplant available in it.

one.. the frame is desinged to exacting standards.. (ladder frame with 20% twist capability using special memory channel steel) so u cant just weld to it anywhere u want. Hell if u want to extend the frame got to buy the special steel from Benz. Their are precise factory specifications about where and how to bolt and weld to the frame.

Two.. no room.. ull have the engine rubbing ur leg

three.. not a big enough market for after market parts. (adapters etc. so ur sorta stuck)

four.. Torque tube... AKA drive shaft... is an integral part of the rear susspension.. u cant like just cut and retube..

five.. Tranny and axils were built with tractor thinking... as in they felt it would never go fast soooooo... its not lubed or got enough bearings in things so if u juice them up.. and drive at higher RPMs. u burn everything up in it cept the pretty motor u added.

Six... No ring and pinouns available to change to...

soooo everyone that wants MOG axils... BE AWAREE.. u will burn them up on the hiway at 65.. 55 is pushing it... (unless u get the fast axils as they are called)

In my dreams... I think this guy updated to fast axils from a 416 and uses the same engine as mine (OM671A) Ive read some of the stats on the rig and looked at close. well as close as the net would let me.

I can get UNIMOGS under 10 grant ! I also sell disc brakes and ctis (central tire inflation systems) for UNIMOGS !
The UNIMOG axles are not build with tractor thinking , you never burn up a UNIMOG axle at 65 miles on a higway ! I go up to 90 miles with those axles on the German Autobahn with no problems, the bearings are very large and very well lubricated !
Only the stock brakes are not good for high speed !
If someone is interested in UNIMOGS drop me an E mail .

www.killeraxles.com

Ps.An stock 404 UNIMOG will outperform most custom build 4x4s with ease (seen in Moab 2002) !

Ur comment on axils is a toss up.. as I started exploring the Mog Idea I did get 50/50 comments on that one... some said yes axil problems... some say no... but it is a pretty much a 100% agreement that the tranny has overheating problems.

Yeah... Mogs start at around 4 grand from germany folk. and go up from there. Mine is actually only 9 grand over there if I bought it in germany but it has the OM617A in it so yeah cost more.

You guys check them out... cause he is right... a Mog can out perform lots of trailer queens.... just know that its a very restrictive platform.

Hiya there.

I'd like to make a couple comments here.

I'm not going to push the whole Unimog thing with anyone on this list. I just want to mention some things that often get overlooked.

I'm not going to knock the price that "coachgeo" is paying for his Mog and the price he has to pay to get it here. I have been bit by the Unimog bug also and when you get emotionally involved with one its hard to stop the purchase.

Anyways, as an owner of 8 Unimogs I would tell any future owners to buy from someone in the United States. There are many many reputable dealers that import Unimogs into the U.S.. (They are not only importers of trucks, but also importer of parts and do this for a living.)

While you may be able to get a "good deal" from someone that is in Germany you'll never know what you're paying for unless you physically go over to Germany and look it over. Alot of people wire $4k+ to someone in Germany... wait 2-3 months for the shipping container to arrive only to find out that they paid $4k+ for 6700 pounds of rusted scrap metal.

If you buy from a dealer you not only get a truck that isn't a basket case and actually runs, you also get a guarantee. They also have guarantees on the parts they sell and are willing to go that extra mile for you to locate parts.

Ok, thanks for letting me vent off some steam.

Support your U.S. Unimog dealer!

Later.

coachgeo, you should look into buying one here. If you want a camper rear theres a place here in Greensburg that makes motor homes that may make you one for a couple grand. plus you could see it in person and drive it before putting out the $$$$$$$.
