Got my transfer case apart to install a new input gear and before I put it back together I wanted to check the chain stretch/tension/deflection. I have had no luck finding any definitive spec on what it should be or even the correct way to check it while the case is open and apart.

Thanks in advance

ive been doing a little research on this topic myself because im going to be tearing apart my tcase when i install the sye kit i bought. As far as i can tell as long as there isnt alot of play you are ok. BUT the shops i have talked to have also recommended look at the inside walls of the case around the chain on all sides. Check for scrape marks. Also you shouldnt find any chunks of metal floating around.

Just make sure there isnt too much lateral movement, within in a .5'' also, check from play because of the chain stretching. If you can hold the chain on 1 end and hold it up horizontal in the air, and the chain sags just a little bit. You are ok. But if it has a lot of bow in it or sag, get a new one. Now, dont take this as a spec sheet comment, just what i have used in the past and others I have known told me this. Just FYI

I threw a HD231 Chain in mine out of a S10 231.

How many miles are on your Jeep? When I tore my TC apart, my Jeep had 140,000 miles and I knew that the chain was probably the original, so I just replaced it. I thought it was $70.00? well spent. :)
