payton 05-10-2002, 10:50 AM come on guys give me sum bones too look for .. as of now im dumbfounded.. i have no clue whats wrong or where to begin... and i live in a area with out a decent jeep dealer..
it stopped running the other day and wont startback up...
things ive checked...
chased all wiring..
changed cps. in transfercase..
changed teh coil..
changed the ingnitation mod..
what else do i need to look for ...
oh yeah its a 1989 2.5 5 spd....

bigdude 05-10-2002, 11:07 AM If it turns over then you may not be getting fuel. It's carbeurated so i can't tell you how to check, but that would be my first guess.
If it's got gas and turns over then it probably doesn't have spark. Then check check plugs/wires/distributo (since you said the coil was good.
I broke the tab off my rotor and my jeep wouldn't start because the rotor wasn't turning. it did turn over though (but man did it sound bad:D )

AND IM GETTIN FUEL CAN SMELL IT.. HAVE EVEN POURED A LIL DOWN THE CARB.. AND NOTHING.. SO ITS NOT GETTIN SPARK..
WHEN THE ELECTRONIC IGNIATION GOES OUT WILL IT TAKE THE COIL WITH IT?
I HAVENT TRIED NEW ELECTRONIC IGNITION AND COIL AT THESAME TIME .. WORKING WITH A LIMITED BUDGET...
My .02 would be the crank sensor.
but I could be waaaaaay wrong.

Check the CPS connector on the vehicle side. they have a bad habit of going bad. Also have you tried reading the codes? If you turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on the check engine light should blink with the codes.

Ever tried pulling code or are you planning on a free-for-all parts replacing spree?
This may come as a shock, but other shops, besides JEEP, service jeeps, and most will have the equipment to pull code on an '89.
You still haven't mentioned what the cap/rotor condition is:rolleyes:

im looking at replacing the entire eng... and tranny later on.. but if its electrical then its not gonna help bolting and pluggin a new engine in.. now is it?
on reading codes.. why in the hell dont i have a check engine light to read of off?
and pullin the dash theres a emiss main cover but no light or socket behind there! this thing needs jesus..!

bigdude 05-10-2002, 02:46 PM Check your cap/rotor and wires to/from the coil. Also check the coil. A simple voltage indicator will tell you if you have power there or not. you can pick one up at Napa, autozone, or even walmart. If one of the wires goes bad leading to the coil, from the coil to the distributor, or if the rotors bad, then you get no spark.
