extremetoy 12-18-2006, 06:50 PM wow this blows i just sold my case w/ gears, bought a ott adapter, sold my crossmember, bought a d300, spent fucking forever flipping it and i still need to make twin sticks for it.
perfect timing
edit, the price makes me feel a little better
Very cool, eh?
We have several choices for crossmembers for these too. ;)
ROCKILLER 12-18-2006, 07:10 PM Thats pretty damn sweet.
OOP'S 12-18-2006, 08:30 PM Inchworm quietly steps to the plate again, nice work Jim!!!!! Bam, another home run!!!!!
wow. that is killer. that really opens up even more the toy tcase market...killer!:smokin:
GRMhick 12-18-2006, 10:04 PM DUDE! Coolest new product I have seen all year. Right on!! :grinpimp:
Fawk Awph 12-19-2006, 02:03 AM is it flat across the bottom or does it drop down like a stock case? could it be made to be clockable?.
very cool though. looks as though you manufactured new center sections on the case, reused the rear protion by just rotating it upside down, and reused the output piece as well.
question though, wouldnt it be cheaper to just retube your HP60/44 to pass side drop, because i dont see where else you could need this, unless you are stuck with the stop front suspension, ie, IFS etc. assuming you will need the adapter to run the minicase either way, it seems most cost effectice to just go pass side drop.
i read further, looks as though the gas tank on a new fj is in the way of running duals and pass side drop, still cheaper to just get a custom fuel cell???
its awesome either way, someone was bound to do it, i was thinking about trying to make a home made version the other day when i was stuck with a drivers drop axle and wanted minicases.

steveh 12-19-2006, 09:45 AM I would love to see FROR fab up some of their Xfer case mounts for these. That would be sweet!!!
I bet the FJ's I saw on Rubithon would have had a much easier time with a Lefty installed!
SeaBass44 12-19-2006, 10:00 AM I would love to see FROR fab up some of their Xfer case mounts for these. That would be sweet!!!
I think alll you would need to do is flip the mount over 180* :flipoff2:
mobil1syn 12-19-2006, 10:04 AM Nice product..... BTW this would also be nice for the 4cylinder Taco guys that have passenger side exhaust and want to use a gear drive T-case!
first thing that came to my mind was my 2wd taco, im pretty sure its fate has just been sealed. i had talked witha few people a while back and it was going to be expensive to do since i would more than likely have to use an altas with a adapter.

flip the DIY center plate and away you go. a quick look at the crossmember looks like you could flip it and it would still be mountable, if that doesnt work i doubt it will be long before hes got something.

Lefty has been designed with the clocking already in place. I have added some info on the clocking to our website as I have seen a few people wondering about it. I guess I was just so excited to tell the world about Lefty that I forgot to mention the clocking. :D http://www.inchwormgear.com/picture_library/Lefty/PICT0025 (Small).JPG

If your 2wd is an auto, we have an adapter that will bolt this tcase right up when you're ready. I don't have it up on the website yet, but there are a couple of them running around out there. I'll be working to get some more info up on the site over the next few weeks.
ROCKTACO 12-19-2006, 03:28 PM Cool shit jim, I guess I'll have to try harder to break the chain case so I'll have an excuse to get this on the taco.:smokin:

Inchworm 12-19-2006, 03:45 PM Inchworm - tell us about the 5.7 gears.....
They are just like the 4:1, 4.7:1, or 5:1 gears we have been selling for years, just a different ratio. Takes a little bit more grinding to make them clear, but the housing is still plenty thick enough to be sound. The low range gear is just big enough that you actually need to clearance the end of the shifter just a bit or you can "feel" the teeth in the lever while you are in low range. That is the only significant difference I have seen.
I have had a set in my automatic 4Runner since May. It is the one we had at Rubithon this past summer... Worked beautifully!
We have actually been selling these gears for a few months now. Just haven't updated the site...Oh I just did!
Would you like a set? :)

its a manual, plan on going to a w59 bell housing, w56, toy reduction, inchworm lefty.
before the only real options i had in the left hand drop woudl require at minimum 1 adpater to a flipped 300 or atlas or stakk. lots of money. a geared lefty isnt that bad of a deal. im sure it would be a little cheaper if i didnt need the taco adapter too.
any plans to sell just the "rotation" plate?

Down the road we may consider selling the individual parts, but at least for now it will be complete cases only.
I can give you credit toward it for a core gear driven case, if that helps.

whats wrong with running a d300 aside from the fact that its a jeep part? It give you the benefit of front digs:smokin:
I didn't have to clock mine since I've got a regular p/u with toy axle, but I just sold my regular dual cases to get the d300 with ott's adapter.
'Lefty' looks like a great product though

dont see a practical need for front dig on a trail rig. i have a learned a few other tricks helping out teamslowspeed this season that would work just as well. not to mention that a 300 is passenger side drop and i need drivers. also there is no way in hell im going to spend the money to flip and gear a 300. for that price ill go with an atlas or stakk.
ROKTOY 12-21-2006, 07:33 AM Very nice product...I can see this being popular. Well done!!
Cool that you also integrated the clocking ability.

Why do you need a drivers drop chris? (Im thinking ahead)

true, but you might not need gears since the ott adapter (also available through inchworm) uses a toy crawl box in front of the d300. And if that still not enough, then throw some gears in the toy crawlbox since d300 gears are so expensive. and there are some cheap homebrew ways of flipping the 300.
anyway, sorry to get offtopic in your thread Jim. Looks like a great product you've got there :smokin:

and at $1700 LEFTY is a cheap alternative to a flipped and geared 300:shaking: for that type of money I would go to a stack or atlas also. And with the 300 u can go with 32 spline ouputs, true twin sticks and after market case if needed down the road, whats not to like :flipoff2:
great looking product and love the innovation. sorry for the hijack

I believe the $1700 Lefty will mate right up with the existing Drive Shafts. It already includes the adapter to mate to the tranny.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe you need other parts such as tranny adapters and yokes or flanges to install an Atlas, Stack, or D300. I'm guessing it can get up to and above 3k real quick.
The Tacoma truck the prototype went in is being Daily driven, and they did the swap in a few hours. That ain't happening with an Atlas, Stack, or D300.

OTT adapter $550
d300 $250
32 spl rear out $270
32 spl front out $170
4-1 gears $5-600
d.line flanges $250
flip kit $55
total $21-2200
thats with 32 spline out puts and it comes with a iron case, add twin sticks for front digs and there u go.
You can build it as u go, start with stock outputs and gears and u can do it for $1100-1200 less and build it up as u can afford it.
if ur paying 3k for that ur paying too much:flipoff2:

Fortunately, Lefty isn't 3k. :)
Your idea may be great for a do-it-yourselfer converting a 22R equipped rig to a left hand drop. However, I think it overlooks a few important points.
Lefty was designed with the 95+ Tacoma, 4Runner, and FJ Cruiser in mind. (they are the rigs with the left hand drop) None of these rigs came stock with a gear driven transfer case. In order to use the setup described you will still need:
Tacoma Transmission Adapter ($400)
Gear Driven Tcase (~$100 used)
Driveline Mods ($150-200)
A bunch of extra time to modify the floor, shifters, etc...
Most of these rigs also take a speed sensor. So you'll need to find one that can go into a D300 and interface with the Toyota electical system.
Another thing is that Lefty is a single case which means you can bolt it into an FJ Cruiser without modifying the fuel tank. Modifying the fuel tank to make room for the double case setup described will cost another $400
Most importantly, Lefty bolts right in with a few hours of effort and very little modification. For an evenings work you get a whole lot of trail performance.
I'm not saying your setup isn't a good idea. (We carry all those parts too!) It just isn't really comparable the way it might sound. Lefty is done and ready to drop in...The D300 setup described will take a weeks worth of work for the customer to install....and if he can't do all of it on his own, that will cost him more too.
PJohnson 12-22-2006, 08:17 PM Does flipping the back half create any oiling problems? It looks like the speedo output might be prone to leaking. I see the oil drain, but the fill hole is now lower than stock. How do you ensure enough fluid?
Great new product.

nicely done! I think the fit and finish on the product is enough to justify the cost, never mind the function and ease of operation.
bigredford04 03-27-2010, 11:19 AM I sent a message to Inchworm asking some questions a little while back and thought I'd post up the info that I got back...
i've got a `97 tacoma w/ the 2.7l 4cyl and 5-speed (w59) tranny and i'm tryin' to gather some intel about adding a deeper gears in the transfer case. Its got a d60/d70 axle combo w/ 5.13s.
1. In the thread announcing the lefty jim mentioned that a 5.7 gearset was available...are they still available and can i order a lefty with them preinstalled?
2. In that thread you posted a link to a lefty/atlas comparison that no longer works. Has this been moved/where can i find it?
3. Can i get the lefty in another color? I saw a red one on marlin's website but i would actually like a bright green to match the rest of my accents, and would prefer to not have to disassemble to paint it myself.
4. What crossmember/skidplate combo will work? I like the budbuilt combo but it appears it would take quite a bit of modification to install (not really a big problem, but if i can save some trouble i will). Will the front range crossmember work with just being inverted?
5. Is the lefty compatible with a transfer case e-brake on the output, such as the kind sky or all-pro have available? (modified of course)
thats about all i can think of for now. Thx for your response.

hey austin,
thanks for your interest in our products! The only gear ratio available these days is 4.7 or 2.28. We can built a lefty with either ratio installed.
Here is the atlas/lefty comparison: http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/tech_lefty-atlas_comparison.php it was made for fj cruisers, but gives you a general idea. You can also get double cases if you want.
We can powder coat any color you want, but it cost more to do one custom. I estimate it would be around $55-$65.
Actually bud built has some that he cuts backwards so that they drop on the left for guys installing leftys. I just called him to make sure they are available for your application, waiting to hear back. I don't know of anyone using a front range crossmember with a lefty but i imagine it would work, might block the drain hole.
The rear on the lefty is the same as on stock gear driven cases but it has been clocked about 180 degrees. That said, if you used either e-brake setup clock it in your head 180 dregees and you'll get an idea how it will work. I think clearance will be an issue but i imagine it's doable if you've a mind to figure it out. I haven't heard of anyone taking on the challenge yet.
Hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions, and i'll send you a quick note when i hear back from bud.
Thanks,

hey austin,
just got off the phone with bud. He has a crossmember for the lefty that he cuts for the left-hand drop and then can make fit up in the frame rails basically on any year vehicle. It bolts to the frame and with the greater clearance the lefty offers you'll get a flat bottom with this setup.
Thanks,
-jonathan
