SANTA MARIA -- The U.S. Forest Service will host an open house May 20 in Santa Maria to review the Los Padres National Forest's off-highway vehicle (OHV) programs and comment on its pending grant proposal to the state.
The meeting will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Santa Lucia Ranger Station, 1616 N. Carlotti Dr.
Forest service representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments. Those who cannot attend are urged to call the ranger station during the open house at 925-9538 or submit written comments.
In June, the Forest Service will submit a request to the California Department of Parks and Recreation for special funding to enhance management of existing off-highway vehicle routes and facilities within the forest.
The grant money will be used for trail maintenance, vector education, law enforcement and wildlife habitat improvement.
All public comments must be received by May 31.
The grant money for Santa Lucia will be used for patrols on ATV/motorcycle and four-wheel drive for the enforcement of vehicle laws, plus funding for personnel and equipment to accomplish annual trail maintenance and control OHV trespass in other areas of the district.
The agency also wants to implement a system of monitoring the OHV trail system to comply with state standards for conservation of soil and wildlife habitat.
Other hearings will be held in Ojai and Frazier Park.
