We might go out on Saturday and camp for the night if the weather is good if not we will be there on sunday. It is right above Rollins Lake and about 15 min from Colfax. There is usually about 500 vehicles out there from buggies to stock DD's. Lots of dirt bikes and quads. It is not very hard but lots of fun. There should be about 10+ rigs in our group we have Jeeps and Toyotas most full width and all running 37's-42's.

I will be there but just to watch. I've been driving around in the Horn for the past 2 weeks. Hella fun. I like the history too, found some cool mine shafts and stuff. Some of the trails are interesting. Anyone done the "Imtimator"? That looks insane!
Heres some pics from last time i was down there

This Jeep driver had huge balls, he did things that was impressive. The Jeep is parked in a mine shaft entrance.

Its some trail thats just insane. I walked down it and it was a hike for sure, i was out of breathe walking back up it to my Jeep. i can't imagine driving up it or down it. It has 5 windsheild at the middle section of it. I guess many people have rolled trying to climb it. Do you know where the road with the gate is off red dog rd on the You Bet Rd side? if you go up that trail on the right with the gate the Intimidator is up there. Not many people go back there because the trails are all over grown i have scratches all over my Jeep now from driving through there.

Let me clear a few things up...

To participate in Winter Fun Fest, put on by Cal4wd, you need to pay $75. They take you on a variety of trail runs. (most of us know this)

Some of them may or may not run through greenhorn creek area - I honestly don't know.

Say winter fun fest to a local Grass Valley / Nevada City redneck (dont be offended, I am describing myself) and they think its that time in january where everyone goes out to greenhorn and gets stupid.

So what I do know, is that many of the people being retarded down in the creekbed aren't actually affiliated with WFF. But more just the locals that dont understand that fun fest is actually an organized event. At least thats my take. As far as I'm concerned, its the one weekend of the year that I stay away from greenhorn.

And the intimidator isn't anything special. I have done it in a stock cherokee with all terrians (tooting my own horn)

I dont get down there nearly as much as I used too... but if any of you local fools see my pile down there, stop by...

Yah I've been here for a while just under a different screen name before. I changed over most of my forum names to cummins a little over a year ago. I've seen you post here a bit. I asked about that Intimidator trail and most don't know of it but the people that know laughed their asses off. They said its so easy its a waste of breath to even mention it. You foo this is Pirate so if you mention "insane" it better be unmakeable without a helicopter.

No WFF for me I went to 2 of them and its just too crowded. Bunch of foos too. This redneck would rather do some wheeling then get caught up in the masses. I'll be in Hollister on Saturday then going to Vacaville on Sunday.

This weekend off-roaders with a hunger for mud, snow and rocky terrain will put their vehicles to the test during the 25th annual winter fun festival at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

The four-wheel drive event hosted by the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs will take place Friday through Sunday.

There will be three narrated historical sport utility vehicle trips and 10 separate four-wheel drive runs in the high Sierras for experienced drivers.

The event is expected to attract more than 600 people. Meals, indoor family entertainment and recreation will be provided all three days of the event.

SUV owners will not need any special equipment, and stock vehicles should have no difficulty in the snow using four-wheel drive and low range.

Historic tours will take riders to Rough and Ready, the Bridgeport covered bridge, Empire Mine, hydraulic mining sites at Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park, Goodyear's Bar and Alleghany.

Citizens Band radios are encouraged for all SUV trips but are not mandatory.

The cost for any of the SUV or other four-wheel drive trips is $75 for adults and $40 for children age 8 through 14; children under 7 are admitted free of charge. The cost includes all meals, beginning with Friday dinner and ending with lunch on Sunday.

Camping facilities with RV hookups and hot showers are available at the fairgrounds. Interested participants should call (530) 273-6217 for reservations.

I wouldn't do the Intimidator, its hella steep. I would roll the Jeep for sure trying to climb over the ruts and crap. I am still learning though. It looked horrible walking it.

Hollister is cool but i never saw anything at Hollister that came close to looking like the Intimidator. Unless everyone is like you and make their own trails, lol then there might be a couple like it.
Its supposed to snow tonight at 3am all the way down to Sac. Sac is supposed to get 2 inches. I don't know if that will happen but it'll make Winter Fun Fest interesting.

Hollister is a cool park to hang out in but I mostly go for Tank. I also take my friends who are new to wheeling up there a lot. Its a great place for beginners. You probably just cruised around the fire roads at Hollister if you didn't see any decent trails. There's tons of trails all over the place ranging from easy to medium. Lots of trails would give your jeep more trouble than you would want. There's a few trails that can be pretty fun depending on what lines you take. But for the hardcore wheelers its Tank. In the winter when tank is nasty its impossible to do it unassisted. Best time to do it is when its slightly damp and just slick enough to fight traction. Too wet, BLAH.

I see that htek did Intimidator in his stock cherokee with all terrains LOL. If that's true then Intimidator is a piece of cake and not difficult at all! You really must be just learning! But that's cool everyone has to start somewhere. To tell you the truth if you're just learning and with your rig being close to stock and open, Hollister is a great place for you to wheel and get to know your rig. There will be plenty of trails that your jeep can't complete and tons of trails that will challenge you as far as you'd want to be challenged.

How it all started...

Cal4WD has been doing Winter Fun Fest for many years. They have some night runs on Friday. Saturday everyone goes and runs a trail from easy to hard. On Sunday there is a couple of runs and everyone that does not go hangs out and does some thing as a big group. Years ago they went to green horn creek. People heard there was going to be a group of people out there and just started showing up on Sunday. A couple of years ago there were more people out there than were actually part of WFF and it was hard for them to keep track of there group so they moved there Sunday entertainment to the fair grounds so they can be alone. Everyone else keeps going to Greenhorn on Sunday and that is why people call it Winter Fun Fest.

I will be out there with everyone else having fun beating on my Junk.

Another local boy here. The Greenhorn is 5 minutes from my house, so I usually find out about the event from ya'll noise :flipoff2:

Intimidator ain't no big deal. Done it in my stock T-100 (w/ 31" tires). Still putting my XJ together, so it won't be there. If you see a white T-100 with a white lumber rack in the greenhorn, give me a beep and a "Hi Screwzer" and I'll show you some amuzing side trails.

Yeah, Sunday seems to be the day for the Greenhorn. Musta been 100 vehicles last year at least. Lots of big-ass sand piles to climb. Biggest issue is stayin' outta folks way.

Since I'm a member of NAXJA (Cal4Wheel member I think) can I "crash the Friday/Satirday events at the fairground? Not real interested in the runs listed (nothing on the Cal4 site, BTW) since I've done 'em so many times.

I had a great time down there until some asshat decided to go crashing through the bushes up by the sluice box. Here's the story:

I was standing there on the edge of the sluicebox watching folks run the box and thouroughly enjoying myself with my favorite brew, while everyone enjoys my "backyard". Behind me, on the other side of the marsh between the mine and the sluice box, some asshat is trying to crash through the Manzanita.

I look over and think "OK, he's 10 feet from the trail, he'll figure that out and go around."

Nope.

His buddy goes down (to whom I mentioned and pointed out the trail to) and they proceed to let out the winch and attach it to a dead tree on the edge of the marsh.

WTF?

Next thing I know, trees are crashing and this asshat is bound and determined to cut a path through 30-40' of Manzanita, while the trail is 10 FEET AWAY.

Having had enuf, I went over and said "What the Fuck are You Doing"

Blah, blah, blah, big talk back and forth. I guess I was pretty loud, cause when I got back to the sluice box, everyone was watching.

Speedfreaks eventually went around and made sure to come by and act like tough guys. I let 'em fume and stuff, not cause I was chicken, but because I REALLY didn't want to have to help clean up the mess when 80 or so folks beat the shit out of them.

So, other than the three asshats, it was great to see ya'll in home home territory and I'm glad there were no casualties.

Yeah, I was afraid the dickheads were gonna squash a Madrone (my favorite preheistoric Sierra tree that grows REALLY slow). You can see one lower left in this picture, taken at the Sluice Box (the Madrone was in no danger):

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d105/Screwzer2/Greenhorn%2007/SluiceBox.jpg

This was a really nice CJ that came to play in the Sluice Box. Talk about approach angle! His tires front and back extended a good 10" beyond any body or armor part.

When you head up the creek from the main "camp" at Red Dog, you encounter this obstacle on the way to Buck Eye road. 8 years ago, I could take my FJ55 w/ 33s through here, but subsequent storms removed about 10 feet of sand. Haven't seen anyone make it through there (rocks are like pungie sticks), but I've seen a few u-joints and axles sacraficed. Last guy that tried to go through ended up with 3 winch lines on him. Looked like a spider (or a spiders lunch, oncve his u-joints broke). There's an easy bypass to the right. Here's a kid fawking around at the entrance. We tried to get him to "go fer it" but he wasn't biting  Smart kid.:
