Will I blow up if I weld on a truck with a full tank of gas? That is all. Thank you.

Only if you're welding on the gas tank :flipoff2:

Thanks. another question. If your standing on the truck being welded, I assume you have to be completely insulated from the vehicle or you will be shocked?

Not really, you might get a "tickle" if you're bare skin contacts the grounded work and your work is poorly grounded and you're standing in a pool of water and blah blah blah.

What im saying is, you would almost have to TRY to get shocked and even then its not much of a shock.

But im sure if you look long enough, you will find someone who has been electricuted while welding but it would be due to some catostrophic equipment failure or very poor safty practice, like some jackass welding naked while standing in a pool of water :p

roflmao.... you know some where sometime there was or will be a jackass welding naked in a pool of water.... lol hmmm send that thought to mtv's jackass :D

If you have to ask if you can weld on a gas tank, don't do it.

And think about birds on a power line. Do they get electrocuted?

yeah but birds on a wire aren't grounded...the truck would be.

note to self: no more naked welding in the rain. :D

By clamping your ground lead to whatever you're welding you make a circuit. You cannot weld with the stinger to a building even though the building is grounded. You must make a complete cicuit in order to weld. Your truck probably will not be "grounded" like you think it is... Birds on a wire aren't grounded just like you're not grounded. You're part of a circuit... My stingers are usually always broken and you can usually always see bare copper. When I have wet gloves and I've got one hand on the structure I'm welding with the other hand on the stinger, than yes, I can feel a tingle. It's like touching a 9 volt battery to your tongue. You will not be electrocuted. You will receive a shock. The shock will not affect you physically outside of an irratation..

BTW, Gas does not burn. Gas vapour does burn.

I would think that if you put your hand on the truck you would be part of the circuit which would account for the "tingling". However you are not the main point of exit for the flow of electricity (like you woud be if you took off your shoes and stood in a puddle). But still you are part of a circuit which is grounded so there has to be at least some electricity flowing through you. right?

back in my racing days we used to have to weld out in the rain often to get things done in time, the person doing the welding would get on occasional tickle, the poor sap holding the peice being welded into place sometimes got a good jolt.
if you are using dc don't even worry about it it flows over your body and won't hurt you much, if its ac it can hurt you but very rare, welding is done at low voltage and its hard to get enough current thru you to cause injury.
as for the tank its safer full its the fumes that explode not the gas itself, if you are welding close to the tank use something as a shield between the welding and the tank just in case it is less than perfectly sealed.

but ur forget ruber is a insulator so go buy ur self a body condom and strip nakie slip in to the body suit... and weld on the rig. wait if ur asking if u can weld its probally not a rig..
more of a heap.. lol.. take it to sum one who knows.. damn

LMAO!! This is the funniest thread I've read in a while. I might have to use this as my new sig............

:nuke: The asnwer is no, unless your welding on the tank itself or right next to it and a spark strays.... use a rated fire blanket to cover the tank if this is the case.... good luck.... :nuke:

yup that would be me........Welding with my 220v Lincoln AC/DC arc and set the electrode down on the ground while the machine was still running, well the electrode stood strait up. I was resting my hand on the bed and accidentally touched the electrode with my knee (I was welding in shorts)

Let me just tell you that 220v hurts:eek:  It hit me and I fell over:emb:

If you are going to weld near the gas tank you probably want a FULL tank of gas. It's simple physics

Gas + AIR + spark = BOOM!

Having less air in the tank is safer.

I've got a buddy that used to weld on gas tanks quite often. He would remove the tank, empty it out, and then fill it full of Argon or C25...whatever was in the tank. He never blew up, but I don't know enough about it to say that this is completely safe. Another buddy used to fill them full of water to displace any fumes and then seal them.
