: Duracoating guns is fun
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 06:27 PM and addictive
This is the CETME I refinished and sold to Grendel
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=278650&stc=1&d=1166840522
Done in flat black
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=278651&stc=1&d=1166840522
I was bored so I did pretty much everything
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=278652&stc=1&d=1166840522
And now my FAL is 90% complete  all I have to do is finish my carbon fiber full float handguard and duracoat that and its done
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=278653&stc=1&d=1166840522
the "shiny" by the top cover screws are stainless lockwashers. I did not feel like nor see a point in coating them

usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 06:28 PM hey wtf is with the hosted images showing now?
TheRedHorseman 12-22-2006, 06:31 PM Looking good.
What rear sight is that on the FAL?
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 06:31 PM I aluminum oxide blasted everything. I found that the little gravity fed blaster from Harbor Freight worked better than my pressurized blaster (its also on sale right now as is 25lbs of aluminum oxide media)
Next is my Bersa and 1911
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 06:34 PM Looking good.

Tall Israeli L1A1, it matches the hight of the open ear front
cybergeek23851 12-22-2006, 07:02 PM The wood is looking good Doc. Save a basket case for me to teach you with :D
kodiak1232003 12-22-2006, 07:06 PM looks great, doc!
hey, could you use the same stuff on a revolver? i'm looking at sp101's, but i kinda would like it to be a cool drab green, or matte color, rather than the shiny steel color
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 07:16 PM looks great, doc!

yup, don't see why not. I have no clue how it would handle the blowby at the front of the cylinder. Its pretty tough shit.

TheTacoKid 12-22-2006, 07:30 PM That looks very nice. I haven't tried the duracoat yet but heard great things about it in the firearms community. Keep me posted on how it holds up.
PONY_DRIVER 12-22-2006, 07:55 PM Looks good. Ever try Norells Moly Resin?

I am gonna wait a week or so before I shoot anything but I will post up.
Nice work dude, this makes me ponder duracoating the slide of my XD
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 08:05 PM Nice work dude, this makes me ponder duracoating the slide of my XD
tomorrow I am blasting and coating everything on the Bersa (prepping it for CCW) and the 1911. black slides and levers and WWII O.D. green frames :grinpimp: t
That OD green is "correct", it does not look funny.
Oh and the colors on the duracoat web site are pretty accurate
Awesome, lookin' forward to pics...
Aces'n'8s 12-22-2006, 08:29 PM I take it Duracoat, not the enamel stuff, drys in the open...as opposed to baking in an oven?
usmcdoc14 12-22-2006, 08:38 PM I take it Duracoat, not the enamel stuff, drys in the open...as opposed to baking in an oven?
its an epoxy of sorts, the solvents evaporate off and then it slow cures. you can "speed it up" by low temp (125* or so) baking for an hour. But it still gets more set with age
animator 12-23-2006, 12:02 AM The longer duracoat sits, the harder it gets. When we built AKs, we did duracoat finishes. I let mine hang dry for a week before finishing the build and firing it. Some of the rifles from our build are still hanging in the garage "drying", nearly a year later
How did you like building on a Century receiver for the FAL?
usmcdoc14 12-23-2006, 06:46 AM How did you like building on a Century receiver for the FAL?
its a "widow's peak" brow (made sure of that, will explain in a sec to those that have no clue) and the fit and finish is fine. Hell the fucker has less machining marks and casting flash than most coonan ones and even some DSA ones  The barrel timed fine, the threads were crisp, even the fucking gaping to the other parts is perfect.
You just have to pay attention to what you buy.
Ok for those that are not FAL addicts: Century has a knack of making either nice guns or fucking turds but you can fix a century turd if you know what to look for in ANY of their guns.(FAL,CETME,AK)
The century fals you want to look at th "brow" the area right where the rounds glide off as soon as they come out of the magazine. There is the "unibrow" that is just a square chunk and the "widows peak" that looks like a smooth lower case "w". The unibrow ones, like men with them, will not get much action :flipoff2: The rounds feed like ass as they bounce off this area. It can be fixed but is a pain in the ass just due to the limited space to get a dremel in there. It is best to start with a "widows peak" one as they feed much better.
Also you need to look at "timing" or the clocking of the barrel in relation to square with the receiver. As this will affect your shooting.
More in a bit as I have to take a dump
usmcdoc14 12-23-2006, 06:53 AM now back on the "clocking".
If a weapon is clocked (same with a Century AK) if it is a lot it wil bind, if its a little you will run out of sight adustment before you can even get it on paper.
4x4mechanic 12-23-2006, 07:23 AM now back on the "clocking".
If a weapon is clocked (same with a Century AK) if it is a lot it wil bind, if its a little you will run out of sight adustment before you can even get it on paper.
So how does taking a dump affect clocking on a FAL? For that matter, how does it affect the adhesion of Duracoat?
PONY_DRIVER 12-23-2006, 07:34 AM Quit posting and go to the range. :flipoff2: I'm leaving in 5 mikes.

usmcdoc14 12-23-2006, 07:40 AM So how does taking a dump affect clocking on a FAL? For that matter, how does it affect the adhesion of Duracoat?
You don't want to rush Duracoating, just like you don't want to rush a dump :flipoff2:

Hickeyjones 12-23-2006, 02:13 PM Doc, do you have a tutorial thread on this? Something like "Duracoating for dummies"?
I'd love to camo my Savage I just bought, but I'd like to learn more about the process, step by step with pics. You are very good at those type of build threads.

i had thought about requesting a sample card from kg, norells and lauer but never got around to it. none of them make it real easy to pick out a color. i do like how some of them use quotes like
Also used by a well-known U.S. handgun manufacturer for their .45 cal. pistols and shotguns. to describe the color. we all have a pretty good idea that this is wilson combat and know what their green looks like.

Hey Doc, what do you think about Savage Arms rifles? Specifically a 93R17-GLV in .17HMR for plinkin' rabbits and squirrels and 'possums and such? My choices in bolt action guns are limited by my budget and by the fact that I shoot left handed...

never heard anyone bitch about them. I put a few hundred round through one in .223 with no issues

Guess we'll find out then, I went and put a deposit down on one, special order in lefty, should be here in a couple of weeks. Now I gotta figure out what I want to put on it for optics... I'm thinking a 4x32 fixed. I don't particularly like zoom scopes on small caliber rifles. :smokin:
NCtoy76 12-23-2006, 10:30 PM what are the pros and cons of dura and moly, also costs, btw nice work doc. my next project is in the mail and sould be here 26 or 27, woot cant wait.:smokin:
mthunter 12-24-2006, 12:34 AM did you build your FAL?
I have been thinking of doing a self build from a receiver on a FAL or a scrach AK
usmcdoc14 12-24-2006, 06:40 AM what are the pros and cons of dura and moly, also costs, btw nice work doc. my next project is in the mail and sould be here 26 or 27, woot cant wait.:smokin:
Norrel's Molly
pros: self lubricating, hard finish
cons: hard finish("could chip"), requires baking
Duracoat
pros: room temp cure, semi flexible finish (it "gives" a little)
cons: waiting for the cure enough to use the weapon, non lubricating
Price is around the same, same spraying, same difficulty in mixing, similar colors (Duracoat does offer some BRIGHT colors for people with race guns)
I went with Duracoat because I wanted a slightly more elastic finish and I can not bake certain items I have. self lubricating is not an issue as I use a dry film lubricant anyway
did you build your FAL?
I have been thinking of doing a self build from a receiver on a FAL or a scrach AK
yes and no  I took a fal with a toasted barrel and stripped it bare and replaced like 90% of everything. So ya, I built it from scratch :D
A AK as a first gun would be a better choice due to the less specialized tools required for a FAL. But you could home make a barrel clamp and a receiver wrench quite easily. That and AK receivers are a "little" easier and cheaper than a FAL one to find.

Good stuff. Aside from the stocks not being world class and sounding hollow (because they are) I've not heard anything bad about them. Great performance at a good price.
I use a dry film lubricant
Sorry, couldn't resist. BTW Thanks for letting me use that FST. Gary says thanks for letting him pop off a few rounds with that commie gun.

ya that "commie gun" was hitting those steels all day long  still amuses the shit out of me how my AMD-65 short as fuck AK is 10X more accurate as my full size one
notstock 12-24-2006, 09:59 AM I just finished an old 22 with One Step (very similar to blueing) last night. Has anyone tried using this for a gun finish? I am a little worried about durability with this finish although it does end up a nice deep black.
PONY_DRIVER 12-24-2006, 10:13 AM Nah, militec is good stuff. I still don't know WTF happened to that .22 mag but at least it's dialed back in now.
usmcdoc14 12-28-2006, 12:57 PM ok should he finished FN/FAL get its own thread or be put in here ?
I am working on somthin' for the color/s on the magazines :D

I am going to build a 1919A4 and haven't decided between the two......moly coat or duracoat.

this was a "fix and polish" of a Century gun.
I have no clue on who has recievers available but builing a CETME would NOT be hard seeing as neither you or I have a fear of welding shit
Ya getting the recievers would be the hard part
