Now we are building also hybrid portal axles with a wide choice of lockers and gears , and we are also introducing an CTIS (central tire inflation system) for the 404 and hybrid axles !
To get the UNIMOG ground clerance you have to cut a D 60 in the middle !All Dana and rockwells are ground anchors, compared to an UNIMOG axle !

What do you want to tell me now. You never saw broken Dana´s or Rockwell´s only Unimog axles?? Did you personally saw a broken Unimog axle? Or do you know a friend who has a friend that was told that somewhere is a guy out there who heard about a broken Unimog Axle. But he did not know why this axle broke. Sure any axle can brake. But you kill a lot of Dana 60´s before you kill one Unimog axle.
I like the American made stuff more than the most of the German junk, but in this case i would prefer the Unimog axle NOT because it is German made because it is the better choice.
BTW the axles are the only German parts on my 4X4. All other parts are made in the USA!!

Perhaps you don't remember Tyson's little mishap at the hot tubs. Don't you remember how his 3rd member cracked in half splitting his pinion. The way how Thyson destroyed his axle is good to destroy any axle. This axle is broken by a very heavy impact.
I talked about a broken axle in a similar way which i saw in the german Army.
As i wrote earlier, it is possible to break any axle. i´ve destroyed 3 Dana 60´s an i can send you many pics showing broken Dana axle parts.

I know any axle can be broken under the right (or wrong) conditions. In your first post you made it seem like the Unimog axles were virtually unbreakable, which we both know is false.

Also, I don't think anyone can say for 100% certainty what caused Thysons axle to break. It did not hit anything when it broke (I was in the passenger seat), but it was under heavy load. Its a guess (an educated guess though) that a previous heavy impact did the damage.

Back to the axle thing. 404 vs 60/RW. I have not priced a RW, but I know I could get them cheap, I have seen the prices people get for them here on the board. I know that to get a 404 rear end I would be paying probably like $1000. Why on earth would I pay that kind of money when I can find 60s and 70s in the local junkyard all day long for 200 bones or less. You also have to keep in mind that I have yet to break my 8". I hope to one day soon, but it hasn't happened yet. 14 bolts are probably even cheaper than a 60, and good luck breaking that. Rockwells are beefy axles, more so than a 14 bolt. An awesome axle, that will not break. Even though I don't have that much knowledge of mog axles, I would like to see their specs compared to a RW, I would be suprised if they were beefier...

back in my unimog days i hung with a guy who had lots of money, he was cool, cuz he did alot of guini pig stuff for the rest of us. anyway, he put a deisel in his with an overdrive box, it was great, better mileage even more torque and highway speeds you can live with. unfortunately we got a good scare one day while doing 75MPH speed limit when the rear axle locked up. come to find out unimog axles, just like trannies are not lubricated well enough at those speeds. dont get me wrong its an awsome machine at 50MPH, i dont know if someone has come up with a solution to this yet, other than newer axles, but for now on my street driven trail rig, i'll stick with a lubricated machine.

i dont know what happened with that locked up axle. I run my CJ with the 406 axles for more than 4 years sometimes with the top speed of 85 miles (only for a short time)without a lubrication problem. I had a 500 Caddy motor with a TH 400 tranny.
Now i run the 404´s in my GMC pick up with a 6,2 Diesel and a 4L80E tranny. I can do a top speed about 95 miles. I can travel a long distance with 75 miles/h. This truck is street legal and i drive the truck almost every day. So far i had no lubrication problem and i hope i never have some. Right now i drove this truck about 4000 miles.

sure, the MOG axles are not the best axles for everthing, but they are really beefy and dont forget a very important point: the groundclearance. That is what we need for Offroad.
You are right, it´s cheaper to find a Dana axle at the local junk yard. I never said that the MOG axles are cheap, but if you take a look at the price list for a good build Dana 60 than you find out that the MOG axles are not expencive. And who else can offer a CTIS.

We do not use Ford parts.
Everything is sooo easy to do. You can find the axles on any junkyard and everybody will do the rest of the work for about 50 bucks. New shafts? No problem! Maybe Auto-Zone will sell you some out of the shelf. New hubs? The machine shop around the corner is waiting for you.

Look at the price for an disc-brake conversion for a CJ with almost stock parts. Go to Dynatrac and order a comparable Dana 60 (6500$) and it´s real easy to find this axle on a junk yard.
I am asking about 10000$ for a set (2axles).
I do not sell parts, i sell disc brake conversions to the Unimog guys, a lot in Europa and Africa.

Go to the Junkyard for your next car. It´s a lot cheaper there than to buy a new Chevy from a dealer.

Sure, i agree, it´s a lot cheaper for you to build your own Dana axles because there are plenty around.
Call the Unimog dealers, maybe you can get some used portalaxles cheap there and then build your own Portal axle.

These guys are a hell of a lot cheaper and I'll bet the customer service will be a lot better.

About $6600 US for a pair of 404 axles converted to disc brakes.

A basic set of unimog axles converted to normal driveshaft yokes (no torque tubes) is around $2000 US.

The $6000 or so gets you disc brakes, 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern for rims and other goodies.
