are those the "one wire" versions?

yes i think so. there is a flat clip with two wires on the side (input) and one lug for output on the back.

why not have the output of one alt. go to a disconnect switch?
that way you could turn on the extra amps when you need them.

I'm looking @ doing something similar w/ wthe scout. Run my standerd 3 wire delco, then run a ford unit setup as a welder/110dc genny/auxilery alt. The disconnedt is a good plan, I'd maybe think about dual batterys, one for each alt, isolated so one can't drain down the other.

in theory whatever alternator is putting out the higher voltage will do the charging, although I'm thinking when load is on there they will be close to equal. it should work, look up a ford superduty or cummins wiring diagram and see how they do it, I know the dodge has a dual alt. option and I imagine the ford does as well.

You can hook both of the alternaters to the same batteries. They will both handle the load together. If you need 50 amps one will put out 25 and the other will put out 25. I know this because my parents own several car audio stores and they do this all the time to run big stereo systems. All of our competition cars have two alternaters on them and they just hook to the battery.

Yup.... the Fords had dual alt options on the diesels and chassis trucks from the early '90s on. As far as I can tell from looking at the wiring diagram, they're just running in parallel.
