If the valve covers cover part of the intake manifold then it is an FE, 352 360 390 etc. Most likely it is a 360 or 390, which are identical and the only way to tell for sure is to measure the stroke with a piece of wire, somebody will chime in with the specs.

If it's still stock after 30 years it has a 360, F250 4x4s weren't available with the 390.

Not sure of the year model but my buddies had a 360FE. Which was recently replaced with a fresh 390.

Get used to having a hard time finding parts. They are great trucks, but you are going to get to know the parts guys well. Ford used whatever they had on hand. When I went through my front brakes on my 75 highboy, I had to order drums and shoes for a 66 F350 2wd. Luckily I worked at the parts store and had the whole shift to find my own stuff :flipoff2:

I have a buddy that is a die hard FE man. He has several 60's and early 70's 2wd trucks. His pride and joy is his '67 with a 428FE. It's a pretty stout engine. Some of the aftermarket companies are starting to make more parts for these engines. I think Edelbrock make a nice set of aluminum heads. I know he has told me that finding a good electronic ignition system can be hard and pricy. The only other troubles I know that frequent the FE's in cracked exhaust manifolds and broken exhaust bolts. Last I checked you could still get the manifold at Autozone, though.

A 75 or 76 360 or 390 will have the duraspark ign, which should be good for any streetable motor. If you get your hands on a 428 crank you can build a 428 out of a 360 or 390 block, but I think it would make more sense to build a 429 or 460, more new and used parts avail for way less $$, with comparable or better hp, very likely better mpg and emmissions.

Although 90% of the blokes with these motors/trucks either think or claim they have a 390, thats fairly uncommon. As mentioned, its most likely a 360. Although an older design, they are actually very solid mills when taken care of.

Yep ford 4wd's never came with a 390 from the factory, likewise for the 460/429's as the 460's weren't available in 4wd's till 83. But a 390 or big 429/460 can be swapped into the approiate years (no fe's in the 80 and newer trucks) using factory parts if you can find them.

According to my old Ford shop manual, F-series 4x4 trucks came with a 360FE up till 1976. You can’t tell the difference between a 360 and 390 from the outside, you have to measure the internal dimensions. I bought quite a few 390FE motors from the salvage yards only to find out they were all (except two) 360’s. One of them turned out to be a 352, and the second turned out to be an actual 390. 352’s (for the trucks) were only used in 1966,67,68 (or it may be 65,66,67). Bottom line, any F-series 4x4 up until 1976 came stock with the 360. The 390 came in the 2x4.

My 76 F250 4x4 is stock with the 390.

That would be of great interest to Ford..since they didn't offer it. Have right here in my hot little hand the factory engine options listing for 1976 trucks...

F-100 4x4 - 360 ONLY

F-150 4x4/F250 4x4 - 300 I6 or optional 360 V-8

And that's it..the 390 was an option for all the 2wd trucks that year though..

Could you please prove? Be really cool if so, but I'm not thinkin it is stock with the 390.
