: AX15 to AW-4 swap in YJ, motor shuts down in reverse....

So last night I swapped in an AW-4 in my 1993 YJ, 4.0L HO. Had to get it done in one night and make it home for xmas, I got it all in and everythign wored well and made the 5 hour trip home other than one issue.

When I select reverse with the shifter, it shuts the motor down, pretty obnoxius actually. I am thinking maybe I need to complete the original circuit from the YJ reverse harness maybe??? I didn't do anything with that section of the harness at all, I figure I screwed up with that part or something. Anyways thanks in advance for any help!

So I just worked on it more. No tail lights, everything appears to be wired right, can't find any one having this issue at all. I did play with the old AX15 reverse light wiring and tried jumpering it but it didn't make a difference other than one time I was able to crank it over in gear...

Anyways anyone with any thought???

Sounds like your neutral saftey switch on the tranny is bad. It's on the passenger side of the tranny. It's adjustable, but if it's starting at all....it's probably adjusted correctly...just bad. Type AW4 in ebay....tons of them come up for a cnote. Apparently a pretty common problem. Mine sometimes won't start in park, and I have to switch it to neutral to get it to start....cause mine is going bad too. LOL. :flipoff2:

Hmmm that is weird though. I just pulled the tranny from a perfectly fine running XJ and everything else is fine. I figured I screwed up wiring somewhere, or maybe the YJ has some sort of weird safety thing wired into it for reverse... I started hacking the A/C circuit out of the harness, looking at the wiring it seems A/C and reverse are related, is there something there I could have screwed up???

I would have thought more YJ people would have done this swap. I guess I will try to find a NSS that I know works and swap it in. Prob is mine apparently is a bastard NSS from 1996 that doesn't match any other plugs I have seen, sweet...

So after looking at some more wiring it looks like maybe when I started pulling A/C wiring out I might have screwed up the reverse stuff. Going over to the garage to see what I can trace....

Is it "shutting off" (loss of ignition) or "stalling out" (loaded to much at idle).
If its stalling out then I might think that somehow your converter is locking up when you put it in reverse, you may want to look at those wires.
Can't imagine anything in that circuit cutting your ignition out, the neutral safety should only be tied to the starter solenoid.

Yeah it was cutting power to the ignition and fuel pump via the ASD I think.

Looking more into the wiring and ALLDATA's site, it turns out their site pinout for my bulk head is WRONG! According to the pinout and the color of wires it had me tap into some sort of power source turned on with ignition. When my reverse light wire fed power to it/vice versa, it killed the motor.

As soon as I cut that wire reverse worked. I jumpered the old AX15 reverse light wires till I got reverse lights to come on and traced that wire to the area I was splicing. Jumpering to that wire just to be sure the reverse lights came on. Took a test light and tested my reverse wire from the tranny and it triggered that reverse lights in the correct position.

When I did a test and temporarily connected the two I got no reverse lights, but my fuel pump would come on!!!!! WTF!!!!

So reverse works for now, but no reverse lights, but I have to pass inspection at the beginning of January so I have to figure this out, atleast I can back out or into spots now...

Yeah I mostly used ALLDATA's sight, I can get you all the diagrams and stuff you need for a 1995-1996 XJ and 1993 YJ. I can also give you my excell sheets I made for the wiring locations/colors/function etc. What year parts are you going to use?

Most of the parts will come from a 94.

Yeah I should be able to get all that info together for you. From what I can see most the 94 stuff is the same as 95, aslong as Jeep didn't build a another bastardized XJ like my 96...hahah.

Update on mine. Still can't get reverse lights, no idea why the fuel pump comes on in reverse with the motor off...
