: 79 Bronco project.
fordman1978 12-26-2006, 04:01 PM well i decided not to sell my bronco. but its still having engine trouble. it starts right up but it doesnt seem to have much power, and it is running a little rough. anybody have an idea of what could be wrong? id like to fix it before the end of the week so i can wheel a bit i havent been in soo long! i did get started on trimming the fenders a bit today though.
jonnybronco 12-26-2006, 04:29 PM Have you checked the normal stuff, (spark plugs, wires, carb, timing etc.)? Mine had 3 dead cylinders, didn't realize it until after a compression check. It still ran, but not very good.
fordman1978 12-26-2006, 04:47 PM ive checked the carb and the timing. havent dont the plugs or wired yet. but i did a tune up on it a few months ago and havent drove it much since. so the plugs, wires, cap and rotor should be ok. but ill check anyways.
fordman1978 12-26-2006, 06:44 PM well i was out trimming my fenders when i hit this nice little rust spot on my rear quarter panel so i got a nice size hole there now. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/shibby307/SUNP0015.jpg im going to b cutting even more off soon up to the trim to clear some 38"s hopefuly i can find some cheapos.. i dont think thats too bad for my first time cutting fenders. :smokin:
fordman1978 12-26-2006, 06:45 PM heres the front http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/shibby307/SUNP0014.jpg i think it will turn out alright.
LeviGarrett76 12-26-2006, 07:25 PM looks awesome....cut more!!!
fordman1978 12-26-2006, 07:43 PM im planning on cutting more i just want to get bigger tires first though. and of course fix the motor. lol
fordman1978 12-27-2006, 02:27 AM well i did some searchin today and a guy has a set of 39" m/t baja belted that are worn down pretty good but stillhave a little tread and he will sell them to me for $20 for the set. cha ching.
Loki89t 12-27-2006, 12:52 PM Looks good, can't wait to see it with the 39s :cool2:
fordman1978 12-27-2006, 04:38 PM i finally got the fenders all cut. i will have more pics soon. and i took out all the plugs and cleaned them. (they were all pretty fouled.) it's running better but its still a little bit off.
fordman1978 12-27-2006, 11:21 PM well it is running good at an idle now. but while it i sidling it starts to go up in rpm's randomly to about 3000 then you tap the gas and it goes back down but it keeps doing it! anybody have any idea whats wrong with it? it is kind of acting like the throttle is sticking but the linkage is fine and the attachment on the side of the carb seems ok. should i maybe try sticking my holley 750 on it instead of the carter 650?
yeep74 12-28-2006, 11:05 AM Check out you electric choke sounds like its sticking.
fordman1978 12-28-2006, 03:16 PM thanks. what can i do to fix it if it is the choke?
fordman1978 12-29-2006, 07:16 PM i finally got my new alternator. got another chev 1 wire (just like my f-250), drilled it now all i need is connectors for the wire. the 1 thing chevy got right lol
offroadin 12-30-2006, 01:35 AM i finally got my new alternator. got another chev 1 wire (just like my f-250), drilled it now all i need is connectors for the wire. the 1 thing chevy got right lol
Ya they're great for people who don't know how to wire a 3 wire alt :flipoff2:
fordman1978 12-30-2006, 01:37 PM i have had them all wired in right they just never last.. could be the brand but they have all sucked. havent had any problems with the chev 1 yet.
Aces'n'8s 12-30-2006, 02:10 PM thanks. what can i do to fix it if it is the choke?
Unstick it...or wire it open. Also, check your timing.
fordman1978 12-30-2006, 02:36 PM alright. thanks
XxStirCrazedxX 12-30-2006, 07:58 PM it starts right up but it doesnt seem to have much power, and it is running a little rough. though.
Sounds like somthing i just fixed on a friends. was doing the same thing. would run fine at idel, hit the gas and get nothing. Fixed it by replacing the fuel pump. was a $29 fix.
fordman1978 12-30-2006, 08:01 PM i replaced the fuel pump about 4 months go and it pumps plenty of fuel. i cleaned all the plugs and that stopped the smoking and it has alot more power now! i think it was running on like 4 cylinders.. lol but i have a new problem now.. its either the starter or the solenoid..
fordman1978 01-04-2007, 05:05 PM well i am on the hunt for a set of 38-39"s. will my stock axles be able to handle these with different gearing? some people have said they will others said they wont. but its all ive got right now. what gear ratio should i go with for 39""s though?
fordman1978 01-07-2007, 09:39 PM i got it running again and it is running pretty good. it wheels awesome again! but it is dying when you put it in gear, or when youlet off the gas and let it idle while driving. could it be my timing or what? i checked my fuel filter and it seems fine. im pretty sure my fuel pump is good i replaced it about 4 months ago. but im not sure if it is the carb, bad gas, or timing. any ideas? and it turns out vato zone sold me a bad alternator..
joispoi 01-08-2007, 07:07 AM I've had great results with seafoam. Get 2 bottles, one to add to the tank and the other to pour down the carb or suck through a vacuum port on the carb. Your truck will blow a lot of smoke through the exhaust when you first pour it through the carb/vacuum line. Do this one outside the garage :) It's about $7 a bottle, but the stuff works great.
Bondage 01-08-2007, 09:50 AM Didn't read too thoroughly but it sounds like the carb could use a rebuilding. If that's the case I'll throw you a link.
fordman1978 01-08-2007, 11:12 PM i dont know it could be the carb. i havent had too much luck with the carters. but yea throw me the link. thanks

fordman1978 01-18-2007, 11:03 PM i got to take it wheeling 1 more time. and i hit some fawkin awesome new trails! had about a foot of snow up there. and made it up some pretty damn steep hillclimbs that none of the jeeps i was wheelin with could make it up. (and my tires have about 30% vs their brand new tires) but then last friday i blew my head gasket on the way to school.. damn 20 degree weather... but i got it all tore down and put back together. but i have no spark now?? i plugged my distributor back in right and hooked up my coil any ideas on this? it turns over fine but it just wont fire up. im almost 100% sure i put the distributor in right..
94stepsideford 01-19-2007, 03:26 PM im almost 100% sure i put the distributor in right..
 go back and adjust til your 100% sure.
fordman1978 01-24-2007, 03:58 PM i am 100% sure the timing is right but i am stil not getting any spark. i have tried unhooking everything and hooking it back up cleaning all the terminals but there is no spark still. could my coil have gone out? is it a bad connection? or did i just screw up and not hook up something? any ideas?
fordman1978 01-24-2007, 04:07 PM also i am planning on selling this soon. i paid 2,000 for it last year. it has a 400 rebuilt about 35k ago rebuilt trans and t-case. new driveline and all new u-joints. k&n air filter carter carb edelbrock intake, 3" single exhaust, full bench seats front and rear. newer carpet, trimmed fenders and 35" baja claws. what would be a fair price to ask for it? i want to get as much as i can for it to fund my f-150 project.
fordman1978 01-31-2007, 07:24 PM i havent had much time to work on this pos in the last week b/c i have been working on the f-150 project.
