right now i have 36's, 4.88's and e4od, and a heathly 351.
high range is great. just about all the power i need. low is only needed in the most extreem cases.
i want to move up to 42's. after i build a better front end of course.
seems like 42's will kill the performace i am used to in high range. i'm afraid that low, will be to low for mild trails. but high, wont be enough.
i have been itching to get rid of the e4od.
i have been kicking around two different set up's.
1: zf5 and undetermend t-case. it has a granny gear.
i am thinking that having that low first gear will get me back to where i need
and i would still have the low range in the t-case for when i need it.
2: c-6 with 203/205 doubler. have just 2:1 for trails, and low low for when i
need it.
maybe i'm all wrong here. i dont have an endless cash supply, so i'd like to get it as close to
right the first time.
truck is used on mild to med trails, and mud. weighs in around 6k loaded as is now.
i'm trying to build it so it can wheel just about anywhere.
can anybody help clue me in on which direction i need to go so i can start shopping for parts?

either one of those will work for ya.... The c-6 with a doubler would work well or a zf with a doubler... Just remeber that an auto tranny will need alot less reduction to perform well on the trails.. I would go the c-6 route because it is an easier swap and also they are a lot more common.. Another good tranny to think about is the n/p 435.... Its a 4 speed instead of a 5 speed, but equally as good. Make sure and search well before you do your tranny swap.... The broncos that have the e4od are a pain in the ass when it comes to the computer... I grabbed the whole set up from another truck that already had a 435... anyways, good luck and feel free to post up any questions that come up...

P.S. 42's are going to smoke those wheel bearings among other things in that d-44 front..... I have been there...

I took an E4OD and gutted it for the planetaries. They are going in a C6 with the 203/205 doubler. That make for a 2.71 first gear. Had a chance to pick up a ZF reasonably, but passed because I'm too lazy to push a clutch. Love my slush boxes.

first on the to do list is build a stout dana 60. the 36's have been brutal to the d44. wouldnt even trust the dana 44 to handle the 42's parked in the drive way.

a buddy found a mid 70's f150 today. he wasnt sure of the year.
he wants it for the front end.
it has the in-line 6, 4 speed and t-case intack.
what t-case is this? if its like newer trucks, then it has a slip yoke not the flange on the t-case right? still not a problem for me correct?
hopfully this is gonna be half of my doubler. t-case wont cost me hardly anything.

Most Broncos have the NP435/205 and you add the 203 as a doubler.
The 435 has the granny low 1st gear but it shifts like a big truck.
You can make or buy a short shift kit. WH just came out with one but it basically relocates the shifter further back.

the only thing i want outta it is the t-case.
btw, just was told its a 77'.

they use the same thing in the bronco and f150 those years?
the tail shft just unbolts off the tcase right?
if this thing will work, i'll try to go pick up the truck tonight so we can strip the t-case and the
front end this weekend.
