: Leaky Master Cylinder

Hey guys,

The guy I bought my bronco from has one of the older style Bendix master cylinders with the metal top that is held on with the pressure of the metal bail over the top of it. Well - the thing is leaking like hell and dripping on the exhaust manifold. I'm assuming he used a late 70s model f-150 master cylinder from Advanced Auto parts or similar. I'm not running a brake booster. My question is whether there would be any issue using a later model master cylinder (one with a plastic reservoir and screw on lid). If so, what's a good year and model to get from advance auto parts?

BTW, I have a 1" bore right now

I'm using a superduty master with a ranger booster. I'm pretty sure just about all of them are interchangeable. Try something in the 90s. Check napaonline it shows bore sizes too.

it looks to me like most of the connections on those are on the passenger side - i'd much rather prefer one with driver side connections so I don't have to make new brake lines..

My old ranger one was driver's side if that helps at all.

if the top is leaking just get a new seal for it.
if the master is pooched just get a new master

well - the seal is practically brand new - I guess I can try and get another one though. I just can't seem to think that this style would ever get a good seal when off-roading, being off camber, etc.

I looked up a ranger master cylinder, and it does have the outputs on the driver side - I wonder if it's any lighter duty than the ones for the f150/bronco. Also, after you take the two bolts that hold it to the firewall, does the shaft that connects to the pedal slip out of the back of the master?

Yeah it's just a push mechanism so it just pulls right out. There's no fluid in between the pushrod and master if that's what you're wondering.

good deal - I guess I'll try to find one with a 1" bore and the same bolt pattern - anything else I should look for? (other than a plastic reservoir and the outputs on driver-side)

mine leaks too. it is overfilled. i have to run my fluids in it about 3/4 full to keep it from leaking out. i still git dribbles out the back when i am really tilted or whatever to one side.
