: 12 bolt rear question
1stgenxxx 12-28-2006, 06:40 PM I'm thinkin about swaping in a 12 rear from a trooper 2 into my 85 runner. I know that they are 58"( the same as an ifs toyota rear). My question is....how strong are they. I have seen people run 42 on stock toyota rear and beat the shit out of them without brakedge....I would be increasing .75" in ring gear size but could it take constant abuse....It would also be welded...
paulevans76 12-28-2006, 08:26 PM Can't answer your question by first-hand experience, but I'll probably be running 40's on mine before I swap it out for anything else. They seem to take abuse pretty well. Maybe get the shafts cryo'ed for a little extra insurance and carry some spares.
franko 12-30-2006, 07:47 PM UMMM 42's on a stock Toyota rear diff, I would really like to see this, not saying its not true, but I doubt you would get far... I would just stick it out with your Toy axles no use swapping out a good thing ..

I've seen toy diffs on 42s. I've also seen just as many broken toy diffs on 42s...
I run a 12B 'zu in the rear of my MJ with 37s. It's holding up so far, even if the rest of the truck isn't. I may or may not break it anytime soon. We'll see. But, I'm not going to try anything larger than 37s on it. The D44 front won't hold that.
chadburgin 01-01-2007, 08:33 AM they are really stout and a great swap. i was going to do the exact same swap in my 82 yota but now i am going tons... i have my rear for sale. now. pm me if you are intrested. its on the NC board as well!
chadburgin 01-01-2007, 08:34 AM but i wouldnt have a problem running 42s on yota front or rear axles if the front had longs! but the isuzu rear has a lot of benifits!
james west 01-01-2007, 04:39 PM im running a welded 12bolt in my scout with 37s...so far so good...plus 4.56s and disk brakes...holds up to the V8 just fine...run it!:smokin:
1stgenxxx 01-02-2007, 04:29 PM I got one for free. I will be running 38 1450 sx's....Thanks for the info guys
BigSwede 01-03-2007, 07:23 AM Free is good...give it a shot!
chadburgin 01-03-2007, 08:50 AM yes for free i would do it, if i doesnt work out all you have really lost is a bit of time. let us know how it goes...
bluemj 01-03-2007, 11:09 PM not to hijack but where do you guys get master install kits for the 12 bolt as I need it for my 5.38's. Thanks...
1stgenxxx 01-04-2007, 03:35 AM I will have the axle at my house hopefully this weekend. I will see if I can get it over to unbrakable fab for the new springs perches. I Need to get my dual trannies in and get my fuel lines ran......it's going to be a long weekend...fueled by:beer:
I will start a build up thread soon:flipoff2:
chadburgin 01-04-2007, 06:37 AM what u going to do about the master cylinder
paulevans76 01-04-2007, 06:44 AM bluemj, there isn't really a master install kit per-say, but Matt at independent4x.com knows what you need and should have the parts in stock. give him a call and he will hook you up.
1stgenxxx 01-04-2007, 02:39 PM I'm going to use one from a t100. It also looks like I'm going to only be running 36" tsls. I found a pretty good deal on some. I might be better off going with the smaller tires due to small wallett and no Longs up front. I'm also going to lower my runner a few inches...It's pretty tall right now. It has some hack ass huge front spring hanger that gettin ditched soon. I think that I have something like 8" of lift right now...I would like to get it down to around 4"
chadburgin 01-04-2007, 03:57 PM just to let you know. i was going to go to a t100 master before i went tons. had it in my truck and eveything. search my thread in the yota forum. the bigger bore might give you less pressure to your brakes. not sure how it will work with the rear disk and none of this matters if you are going to upgrade to newer rotors and calipers in the front.plus, its not set up for rear disc. either way just a heads up. i have a one in perfect shape ready to bolt in if you go that route. let me know.
1stgenxxx 01-04-2007, 04:00 PM What would you suggest then? I'm going to leave my stock front brakes for right now.
chadburgin 01-04-2007, 05:57 PM did you read the thread i had up? there are some crazy smart people on here. ha. i dont know man i would search. since i went with tons im running a 4 wheel disc one ton master with my stock booster. i bet there is something for yotas that will bolt up to your exsisting booster to run 4 wheel disc. if i find anything out i will let you know. we need to get up and wheel as soon as we get our junk finished!
1stgenxxx 01-05-2007, 03:43 AM I was actually thinkin about leavin my set up stock. I drove my 4runner to and from the trail with no rear brakes at all. The lines were rusty so we tried to crimp them off...They still leaked like hell but it got the job done. The stock frount brakes (really low on fluid) still stopped my 4Runner even with 38" SX's.

confirmed................we set up lots of these (did BigSwede's, JamesWest's, etc) and i have all the bearing #'s, parts, tech, spare parts. etc.
anybody looking to run one of these don't hesitate to give me a call.
I do a 3rd member exchange program, and i have 5.38's, ARB's, Shafts, 3rd's (welded, ARB locked, Factory LSD, etc) Powerstop Rotors and pads
and By the summer, i will be the exclusive dealer for the 1st ever Luchbox locker for the 12 bolt :grinpimp:
cool axle
BigSwede 01-08-2007, 06:28 AM and By the summer, i will be the exclusive dealer for the 1st ever Lunchbox locker for the 12 bolt :grinpimp:
Ooooh, that'll generate some excitement! :)
1stgenxxx 01-08-2007, 03:28 PM I wasn't able to pick up the axle last weekend as planned. I'm going to get it on Sat as well as the new preches. I'm going to buy a digi cam this week so I will have some pics of the swap up on here.:D
1stgenxxx 01-08-2007, 03:29 PM any suggestion for helping the disc brakes stop??
chadburgin 01-08-2007, 03:48 PM you need something that is for 4 wheel disc for sure. your stock booster should be fine from what i have read. i will try to find something out for you as well.
1stgenxxx 01-08-2007, 04:33 PM I'm going to swap the ifs v6 brakes and fj rotors in afew months....thats proably when I will tackle the master cyl..I would think that the fj80 stuff would be good because they had 4 wheel discs stock
1stgenxxx 01-08-2007, 04:40 PM My rear drive shaft will need a cv in it. Are the isuzu cv's any good? I have the front drive shaft from the trooper and it would bolt up to the rear. I could also just use a toyota one and drill out the flange to.???:shaking:
zutrooper 01-08-2007, 07:29 PM Ooooh, that'll generate some excitement! :)
I'd agree with that statement. I guess Its time to try to find an open carrier.
houlster 01-08-2007, 10:51 PM My rear drive shaft will need a cv in it. Are the isuzu cv's any good?
Isuzu never used driveshaft CVs. You can re-drill the Isuzu flange, fit it with a pilot ring and use a Toyota CV though. I don't have a link, but it's been covered on 4x4wire and here before.

1stgenxxx 01-09-2007, 03:50 AM Thanks. I could've swore that the trooper had a cv in the front.:shaking:
paulevans76 01-09-2007, 06:38 AM why would you 'need' a rear cv? are you running duals?
chadburgin 01-09-2007, 08:51 AM u could use yota stuff and redrill, correct???
RodeoClown 01-09-2007, 10:07 AM There is no conversion joint (ok, I'm pretty sure there isn't one ), nor is one needed. The Isuzu/Toy u-joints are nearly identical. You can fit the Toy yoke on the Isuzu u-joint using the Isuzu caps. You need to take about 30 thou off the inside edges of the Toy yoke with a hand file to allow room for the c-clips to seat in their grooves.
For comparison, Toyota on the left, Isuzu on the right.

1stgenxxx 01-09-2007, 03:35 PM I'm just going to use my old front square driveshaft for the rear.:smokin:
chadburgin 01-09-2007, 04:11 PM I'm just going to use my old front square driveshaft for the rear.:smokin:
good idea. cant beat the price and strength... do you have to street it? i assume not.
1stgenxxx 01-10-2007, 03:49 AM I'm picking up 5 beadlocks on Saturday...and I'm also gettin my 12 bolt rear. I'm going to drive the shit out of my 4runner on the street with a welded rear and square drive shafts:flipoff2:
1stgenxxx 01-21-2007, 05:23 PM I haven't made much progress on the runner as of late but I will be going to be my axle on Thursday night. I got the new perches yesterday....I need to hack off the one ones, hit the housing with the wire wheel, weld the diff, put some fresh fluid in it and then she will be ready to rock.
1stgenxxx 01-28-2007, 04:33 PM The axle is now sitting in the shop flow. I drove 2 1/2 hours to pick it up and I got a speeding ticket (80 in a 65). I could have bought one at a local bone yard and came out cheaper......:mad3: The old perches are gone now and it's about to get some new rotors/ pads/welded diff/and fluid. Is anyone trussing these...if so then post some pics up on there....also of diff arrmor.
paulevans76 01-28-2007, 07:49 PM haven't really seen anything as far as trusses/armor. shouldn't be that different from a 9" or yota housing. show us what you come up with
1stgenxxx 01-29-2007, 03:43 AM I bought a whole stick of tube to make a front bumper so I should have enough left to truff both sides of the axle. Also..has anyone shaved the bottom of the housing like they do to toyota axles?
