just got offered a 96 4runner that was in an accident, body work i can handle but with both airbags deployed and the fact that i dont need to spend the $ and time on them. i do realize that by law in most states require new bags installed. but lets say im using it as a new toy, but still want it to have a sticker, so can i bypass the lite, unplug it without throwing codes and a check engine lite? any ideas?

thx

If you have to get it inspected to get a title, do everything else you need. Do not try to hide that the bags are blown. Tell them what you doing with it. The inspector on our tacoma was much more concerned about selling the truck with the bags blown, and the new owner thinking they were good by us hiding them. He was fine with the flaps duct taped, and obviously blown bags.

To shut down the dash lights, you can add a 2-10 ohm resistor in place of the missing bags. One resistor per bag. This simulates the circuit inside the detonator, so the PCM doesn't know they're missing. But never try to hide that they're missing. In fact, I'd put a sticker on the dash before going for inspection. "The SRS has been removed from this vehicle. Wear your seat belt at all times for maximum crash protection."

We have air bag simulators for diagnostics at the dealer. I'll try to remember to double check those resistance readings.... been a long time.

Adding resistors is probably a moot point because after the airbags deploy, most airbag modules become disabled. I dont know about toyotas specificly, but generaly speaking most manufactures require you to the place the module after the airbags have been deployed.

pull the airbag computer, that disables the light and the bag cicuit.
the SRS wont light the MIL

Thats what I did. The airbag computer was located on the tranny hump, under the radio. It was a Taco, but probably the same for you.
