: welded diff q's
snoop dogg 05-12-2002, 11:45 AM my front 44 was welded...the welds cracked, but have not broken off YET. I want to put a lockrite in, but do not have the money. I want to wheel very bad, but also do not want to chew up my gears. My question is can i just go and chisel out the welds, they don't look too strong. Or is there any other way to get the welds out.
TERRA-IZER 05-12-2002, 12:15 PM I would get a new carrier, because when you remove the weld from the carrier if you can you might make the carrier weaker, but if you can get the spiders out try it and if it breaks then you will have to get a new carrier, hopefully it won't tear up the gears if it does let go. Just see how if looks when you get the spiders out and make the call, if you to try it or replace the carrier
mytzlflick 05-14-2002, 02:22 PM are you removing it cause the welded front diff sucks or just cause its broken? if its the latter I would say just reweld it. if the first go looking for a used carrier cheap, you'll never get the welds out without hurting the carrier and they are not very expensive.
snoop dogg 05-14-2002, 02:57 PM well the welds that were to the case were tiny and they split...so all i have to do is pull the spider gears out, i think the carrier is fine...the welds were really crappy and the welds to the carrier were tiny tacs, im just using the same carrier b/c i don't have to reset the gears.
Hayraker 05-14-2002, 02:59 PM If your gears use the high ratio carrier, you can sometimes find a carrier for FREE from one of your buddies that went with lower gears.
snoop dogg 05-14-2002, 03:07 PM Hayraker...i already have a new/spare carrier for my gears (4.10)...but if i used that, wouldn't that mean i need to reset my gears? im trying to get saddled up for a ride on tellico june 2nd...need the quickest possible way w/o rewelding, as the would entail more troubles with steering and be a pain.
Hayraker 05-14-2002, 03:29 PM yep, I posted that before reading that yours is ok, just put the lr in the old one, just follow the included instructions and you will be rollin in no time. Good luck, and congrats on HS graduation.
snoop dogg 05-14-2002, 03:34 PM thanks for the help hayraker!

if you are not going to put the lockrite in then what are you going to do? just put in new side and spider gears? if you are going to wheel it i'd just re weld it but weld the crap out of it and then save for the lockrite and then do your own gear setup. you have to learn sometime and a front is the bast place to learn. just my op. :D get that sucker ready for tellico

So are the welds completely broken so the spiders are moving? I don't get how re-welding would affect steering seeing as it is already locked up 100%.
snoop dogg 05-15-2002, 08:12 AM Im putting a lockrite in...don't worry ill be at tellico. There is about 1 cm of play in each weld, so im just going to put the lockrite in.
no big deal, ill BE AT TELLICO trust me, wouldn't miss it.

Usually I would be embarassed when winched out by a Jeep, but since it is really a chevy I don't feel quite so bad, after all most tow trucks are GM:D
BTW, it already looked killer, but even better with the 42's.
