My steering box is leaking in the rear where the steering shaft enters. Has anyone here rebuilt a steering box for these of replaced the seals? Is it difficult and does it require any special tools? I just bought this thing and so I am not familair with them.
Oh, and I tried to search, but it was not working a few minutes ago. As you all know the Search function on this site is a POS.

You can replace the input shaft seal with the box in the car. Take off the steering shaft & pry off the dust shield. There is a snap ring that holds the seal in place. Remove the snap ring & carefully remove the seal. I use Chicago Rawhide p/n 8519. It is a little thicker than the oem one but has worked fine for me. Tap the new seal in until the snap ring groove is visible using a socket to keep it square. Reinstall the snap ring, dust shield & shaft & bleed the box. An actual overhaul is much more involved with special tools required, but an input seal is no big deal.

Right on- just the kind of info that I needed. Is this a common problem for these rigs?

Seal is in. So far, that is one less leak on this rig. Now I'm on to the real bitch project- the leaky heater matrix.
Thanks again!
