: More Asylum stuff
Azrckcrawler 05-12-2002, 04:34 PM You guys get to see the pics first. I probably won't post mine to my page until I can get some of the other digital pics other people took. It's easier to get it all in the right order if I have all the files at once.
This is the hardest trail I have ever run and would give any other trail a run for it's money. Sure, the waterfall at the end is basically a winch thrill ride, the one before that is actually more technical and requires you to drive and turn while keeping tension on a winch line (unless you got rear steer or nuts the size of these. (http://www.trucknutz.com/) . The real trail is just getting to the waterfalls. Nonstop VW sized rocks, cracks, and ledges all provide hours of entertainment with no go arounds.

Well, I have about 100 blurry pictures and they are all from the last waterfall. I don't know what was up with my camera, it was just serviced and had a new lense and focus assembly put in after I got to much sand and dust in it (it died in Moab). I have 4 end waterfall pics that looked ok and Pat took those. Zuk just sent me these:

I am really pissed about the camera. All that work (and I mean work) for nothing. When I get a copy I'll dub some for you guys, it'll be better than nothing. Here's what the blurry ones look like.

Great pics.Nice job guys.
Are there winch points anchored into the rock or a tree or something at the top? Would be a scary place to have winch or cable fail thats for sure. Great pics :smokin:

grimbo 05-14-2002, 05:32 PM I would be interested in getting my hands of a copy. Basically I would be interested in getting copies of vids of some of the stuff you guys are doing over there. Down under rockcrawling is few and far between so the chance to actually watch some footage of it would be great. i would organise shipping and any other costs if you are interested

tail_lite 05-15-2002, 01:02 AM something is still not right...... :rasta:
24 hours on the trail.... and to get out it was continous wheeling ???
I can't help but argue that...... but then again I ain't been there.
Last month we ran wrecking ball in 3 hours and that was with 3 rest breaks of 15 minutes ( at least ) each.
oh well, to each his own..... I sure looking forward to be able to run with you guys when we get the chance..... :)
P/S........ I sure would like a copy of that tape for our viewing pleasure..... :usa:
Azrckcrawler 05-15-2002, 07:43 AM A 3d topo of the trail. The trail starts from the far side of the mountain. The exit road is approximately a 1300 foot drop.

I'd be curious how long it took the first crew to run Wrecking Ball? Running a trail that has seen maybe a half a dozen rigs is way different than following a bunch of guys doing a high traffic trail for the nth time. We were only a few hours off the pace of some of the other groups that went thru, and most of them drove their RRCA competition rigs or had buggies with 40+" tires. I am more than happy with our performance. Definately to each his own, I much prefer running a new or freshly opened trail and having to figure out the lines vs running the high traffic stuff.

it's a mean trail....Tracy Jordan and crew didn't make it the first time they tried it....they made it up the huge waterfall, and ran into trouble too....
they had to share gas to come back out the way they went in....man that had to suck!
from watching both groups (yours and the ARCA guys) it is my opinion....you guys would have made better time, with the same equipment they had i.e. rear wheel steering and hydrolic lifts....and start off doing the easiest lines...I think in hind sight you will agree.....the trail is hard enough, without wasting time playing around on harder lines :nuke:
one other thing....it was about 40 degrees cooler when they ran it....so guys could do more without dieing from the heat....
there is no doubt you guys RULE!!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
JackA 05-15-2002, 08:47 AM There were a few places that everybody had to winch, some breakage, then the huge falls, then the super loose hill climb with a 5000rpm assault, had to tow a rig up that, then the exit road that consisted of many spots where you would roll to death if we didn't have the strap with 5 guys holding on. That all adds up to 24 hours of wheeling. If you think you can do it faster come on out and show us. Even if you do all the hard lines on Wrecking Ball it still isn't as tough. Remember this trail was opened by Tracy Jordan. He runs 44" tires, rear steer, and forced articulation. Bottom line is this trail is one bad mofo. So TinBenders, pack your bags, load the trailers, and get some vacation time and I'll be glad to take you to the trail. Until then :flipoff2:

I understand where you are coming from, I had the same atitude going into the Asylum run. Asylum's ledges and rocks are much bigger, If you aren't fighting with getting high centered on a ledge, you are picking your way through boulder fields with seemingly custom made diff hangers. You can't just get in and drive his trail, you are working your butt off dragging everyone over each of at least a dozon obstacles of RCCA cometition quality.
We too have run wrecking ball in less than three hours. But with Asylum, I will take more time to run it next time. We exhausted ourselves by the time we neared the end,and it took alot of the fun out of the last few obstacles.
Check out Chris's trail report for further info. http://www.azrockcrawler.com

I don't know how you guys kept from killing each other by the time sunset...
I think you had the funniest line when you said "anyone want to spot me..I just fired my spotter"....I knew then guys had enough "fun"
the ARCA guys had their own spotters and pit crew....
you guys had friends and wanna-be's (me):rasta:

Tuner Inside 10-27-2002, 05:13 PM WOW, sweet looking trail. If I had rock up here in Canada like that I would need a lot of sick days.
Newbie question but is most of the terrain down there like that(as in big car size rock and canyons?)
Most of those pics show trail that is abit to bold for my pants. Someday I will be able to take the training wheels off my 410.

Tracy, I have seen you drive and you are in a completely different class than us. If you don't mind hanging with some little fish, we are going to try and complete a new trail this weekend (Nov 2), I know you would have fun. Drop me a PM if your interested. I'd love to try Boomtown, this time everyone in the group will have spares or they get left with the tow rigs....

To make a long story short, we took some unprepared "guests"
and ended up dragging a busted rig most of the way. Even while towing a busted rig, we were to the top of the waterfall in about 6 hrs. with a group of 7 or 8 rigs. To the best of my knowlage, we NEVER leave a stacked rock behind(my pet peeve)The exit road is a story into itself..........
is the cruza still together? I like the new rig.
Boomtown sounds like my kinda trail. Tell me when and where, and I will bring it awwn.
C'mon out next weekend with us. I think you'll find that we can Get it.....(or you will at least find another trail up to your sandards.)
