I have heard that later V-8 scout 800s had d44 front and back with detroits and steep gears. Any truths to those accusations? I am looking at a set from an early 70s 800 with a 304 in it. I would rather go into the yard and not pull covers until I know what is likely. How wide are they compared to the scout II? I know that scout II is around 58" or so WMS to WMS. Thanks alot.

You heard wrong. Closed knuckle dana 30 front or a Closed Knuckle Dana 27 front, dana 44 rear, Power Lock Limited Slip in the rear no Detroits, i have owned then with anything from 3.73-4.88's. They are alittle narrower then a Scout 2 about 1-2"s.

When I linked the rear end on my 800, I used the stock 800 44 as the width was less than 1" WMS to WMS narrower than the SII. My 70 has the same spline count axles and the SII Power-loc rebuilt kits works for my 800.

There are tapered axles and all bet are off for my knowledge of interchanging...

3.73 BTW.

Sometime in '69 or so IH went to the flanged D44 rear...I've seen several 800A's with the tapered D44's. Flanged D44 width is 56.75" WMS, tapered 54.75" (there are a couple versions of the tapered...widths may vary).

As said, late 800 flanged axle uses std 30-spline carrier, normal D44 carrier bearings, same bearings/brakes as SII D44. Shafts are obviously slightly shorter than SII shafts. These axles do not have the breather hole in the pass-side tube, where the brake line attaches on an SII. Instead they used a tiny breather hole at the back of the tube, near the u-bolt on the drivers-side tube. This is often plugged. I've seen them with Trashloks, Powr-Lok's and open diff. Available factory ratios were 3.73, 4.27 and 4.88. I own several and have one under my trail rig.

Tapered D44's use 19-spline carrier and the early D44 carrier bearings. Different wheel bearings and brakes. FYI there are two versions of the SII D44 rear...about '74 they went to wider brakes using a different backing plate.
