I used a nice grey color that lasted only about a year, after a while it starts to peel up from driving on it, it seems like if your tires are wet they stick to the paint and peel it up. But if you clean the floor good it may stick better than mine did. Plus I pulled around axles and it peeled some of the paint up as well. I used kelly More brand paint and that some high dollar paint. All in all looks clean and profesional but dosent last very long.:skull:

We used a expoxy based paint on my buddies garage. It's used for airport runways and is very thick. It will never come off. He used light grey and it looks the shits. go with a darker colour to hide the greese and dirt....................We never wore masks so we got pretty high.........

Home Depot sells a garage floor specific epoxy type paint. Suppose to never peel or stain.

I only ask questions here when I need info I can count on . For Jeep tech or even Jeep garage teck . Now if you have somthing constructive to add thank you otherwise go away .

Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard! This does NOT belong here, it should be in Chit Chat or General 4x4. Your "Jeep Garage" is no different than a Toyota garage or a Ford garage as far as the floor paint goes. Dont get all pissy when someone points out your mistake.

You go away.

www.griots.com has some nice non-lifting paint, $$$ tho.

I think I have been around here long enough to know where I can get the right answers I need on the tech I am doing . And thank you for your constructive help . Here let me show you again . You diddent belong on this thread if you diddent have any imput. Please feel free to read it . Then you can get into your TJ and head home from using the highschool library computer .
Pissy had nothing to do with it .And yes there is somthing different about a Jeep garage . If I was building a garage to work on ther brands I wouldent be here . If you don't have any good info to help the thread don't post .

I dont belong on the thread, and you dont belong in the section. Go ahead and cry about me havin'a TJ, I got what was given to me, and I was happy with it.
from using the highschool library computer
Wtf does that mean? if that was meant to be insulting, please explain it so I can feel properly insulted...

And yes there is somthing different about a Jeep garage
Ok, like what? And remember, cant say height, width, tools, or anything like that, only floor paint. I am waiting.

You can wait a little longer until you get a few years under your belt . You would be better suited to giving advice to the other
school boys . When you get a little older and have to buy the Jeeps you wheel with and build a shop to work on them you will better understand . This section is for Jeep Tech I'm building a Jeep garage and I want to know what works for other Jeepers who have built them . Oh Guess what you dont qualify . Dont come on my thread and tell me what tech is right here or is not . I seem to remember you couldent figure out why your engine wouldent run right when you sprayed it with a hose . If you have a problem I will be more that happy to give you some direction to get your jeep running after you break it . But dont tell me my problems and questions dont belong here when you dont have the first clue on what technical help is . Now I am not going to respond to any more of your posts because the people who want to help . (Oh remember them they post somthing constructive) . have to read thru this crap to do it .When you get a little older and learn to keep quiet when you can't say anything intelegent ,You may understand .

Bear-

Great question! I won't argue where it goes...
I just did my floor 2 years ago and was lucky enough to have a friend in the paint biz. He knew what to use and how to get it cheap. Here is the scoop to get an AWESOME garage floor (upfront: this is not cheap).

I went thru Dunn Edwards paint (don't know if they are in your neck of the woods). This is a two part primer and a two part paint- REALLY TOUGH!

1 gallon muratic (spelling?) acid - to be found at your local pool supply store. Costs about $3

Epoxy based primer and paint - I can't remember the name of the stuff that we got from them, but it is all they carry (so just ring them up). It ships from the factory in SoCal and it is tinted to whatever color you want. Cost...brace yourself...about $300 for a full 3.5 car garage. That covered the thinners, catalysts, and supplies.

12" roller with broom handle - your local Lowes or Home Depot - $12

Mix the acid up in a insecticide sprayer and spray onto the concrete liberally. You want about a 50/50 mix of water and acid. This will etch the concrete and prep it for the primer. Apply the night before you prime and let it sit overnight. Wash it down REAL good the next day.

This next step is optional, but I like it. I caulked my expansion joints with a self leveling compound (I hate sh@# getting between the cracks). It costs like $5 or $7 bucks a tube. Available at your local concrete supply house.

Apply the primer. Mop into all the cracks. Let it sit up over night.

Apply the paint. Again, mop it into all the cracks. You should be able to walk on it in about 4 - 6 hours and move equipment onto it in about a day.

What's good about this stuff:
- it is tough! The only marks on my floor are from where metal has been dragged
- cleans easy. Simple green and a mop. oil does not stain it. You can use abrasives on it if you choose and the finish will not dull.

The Bad:
- It's expensive (especially if you don't know someone who can buy it for you at a discount)

Hope this helps! Make sure you get a good respirator...This stuff is toxic.

Sounds like great stuff. How many square feet is the 3.5 car garage?Looking for a comparison to mine ( 24x32 ) which hold one Jeep and a lot of tools.

I used the two part epoxy with the paint flecks in it from Home Depot. I put it on three years ago and it still looks great. It is not cheap $55 per gallon, but you won't find a two part epoxy for much less. The paint flecks are great at hiding the dirt as well as adding traction when it is wet. I went with a tan color. I get comments from people all the time on it.

I would and will use this product again.

Yeah, back off ya stock 4banger newbie :mad2:

I'm getting near painting mine too and appreciate the advice.
I saw some high end crack filler in an ad once so there has to be good and bad out there ...
Anyone have advice on this?

It's great to paint it, but I've found that after doing a complete rebuild mine's ready for painting again. It's great working on it though, because it reflects light better than the cement. The only real problem I've had is that after welding over it, it seems to get burn marks all over, etc... Great stuff though, I got it at Home Depot.

Mine is 37x24. That inlcudes the lip at the back (which is like 2.5 feet)...But we painted that too.

If you want the good stuff you have to go to a real concrete supply house. If you are ordering online I would try www.whitecapdirect.com and look around there.

I went the more expensive route with the paint I got (I had considered the home depot stuff) and mine does not blemish from welding. I have used my mig welder and even an Ox-Acetelene cutting torch in the garage: still no burn marks.

Something else to consider, Home Depot paint says it lasts like 5 years...5 years under normal conditions, not 5 years of buildups/teardowns/and fix-what-your-ass-broke-over-the-weekend jobs.;)

BTW - On color, go lighter and clean the damn thing more. Dark floors do hide grease, but they suck up all the light in the garage (especially from flourescents). Dark floors also hide dropped nuts/bolts/etc..

Rustyrig,

Which Home Depot product said 5 years? I don't remember reading that. Was it the epoxy that is packaged in the box or in the pail? I have the stuff in the box.

I do get some burning from the welder and torch slag but the paint flecks hide it pretty well.

In fact I think the paint flecks that you put on are the key to keeping it looking good. It breaks up the plain look of the tan paint but hides any of the blemishes. I just went out and took a look. If you look close you can see where the concrete has chipped or some dirt has blown in. It hides it really well. That is exactly what I wanted.

My buddys grey floor shows everything!

What I saw at home depot was the epoxy based paint that had the 5 year life span...can't remember if it was boxed or in a pail. My floor looks like crap when it isn't clean (like dirty concrete does) but it's light color (grey) really brightens up the garage. I find things on the floor easier and it amplifies my 2 overhead lights. If I had to do it all over again, I would not go dark. I might have gone to a light tan/blue/whatever.....Just not dark...unless of course you dig flood lights! :)

Another tip: you can mix in sand (various grains available from fine to coarse) into the paint mix to provide a non-slip surface.

I saw a show on HGTV called Extreme Garages . The garages I saw were nicer
than my home . And my house is no slouch I worked hard on it . I want to do a Mexican tile look on it
that's why I need the rust color .I have to do a fo finish on it . that's where you put down the base coat ,
Blot Sponge tan or yellow on it . Then hit it with a dry roller to blur and mix . Comes out looking like a
mexican tile floor . Except the tiles are 4"X4" .Grout lines are 1inch tape around the 4x4 square . The
ceiling is 4'X4' squares of 1/4 inch plywood one side good, set up like a checkerboard ,Varnished and
2"X2" strips covering the seams .I believe the interior walls will be recycled Barn wood . Who knows
. There's a barn falling down by my house I may try to get the wood . Construction starts this week .

Good topic. I'm for the lighter color paint - as previously stated for reflection of light and easier spotting of stuff that get's dropped. I'm not so sure I'd let the muratic acid sit over night so that it dries on the concrete, but if that's what the directions called for...... hmmm.

I've cleaned my floor several times with a diluted mixture of muratic (well, a couple times at full strength). Keeps it looking relatively new after a lot of messy work in there.

Watch your lungs with that stuff......:skull:
