I've got a couple of third members and axle shafts I'd like to pack up to store.

What is the best way to pack them up for outdoor storage?

Specifically, what should I wrap them in and should I put something on the exposed metal surfaces?

TIA,
John

Put grease on the metal and wrap them in shrink wrap the heavy duty kind they wrap pallets with is the strongest.

Grease them up and store them in sealable rubbermaid type containers.

LPS3 Rust preventative and plastic cooking wrap works good. If you are really serious, store them in sealed buckets of diesel. That is common up here around costal areas.

The key is to keep them from sweating. You could paint that tool handle dip on them. Problem is on a shaft you want to prevent rust even mid shaft because it will make a weak spot in the tempering.
I'm going for the tool handle dip and paint on my spares I keep in the rig. I figure paint will wear off quick and is not hard enough to damage the bearings.

Might want to store the axle shafts either hanging or standing strait up. I asked at a machine shop why they sere storing engine cranks hanging and was told that storing them flat for long periods would eventually warp em a bit. Take it for what ya will, but might be worth the thought. Hell, might be an old wives tale or outdated info like not putting a battery on the ground.
