: Few Questions

I'm wanting to get either a wrangler or a cj7 and go to work on it. I'm wanting to put a 454 going to either a TH400 or a 700r4(opinions) np205. Then I'm not sure about axles. I want to run 44" Boggers, because it will mostly be in mud and a on a few trails. For the axles I can't decide between Dana 60 and a 14 bolt in the rear, or 2.5 military axles. I know the rockwells are by far stronger but is all that extra weight going to bogg me down. I know with the 2.5's I'll have to at least run 14" rims so that will help me on staying on top of the muck. I really want the 2.5's because I wont break near as much stuff with the other two (60&14). I just need help making up my mind the all the extra weight.

No money trees here. I have an older F350 that I want to sell and put that money toward it. I know a guy who is in the local national guard who might be able to help me with some rockwell's, hopefully. I think I can also get a holt of a 454 or 350 fairly cheap from a local too. Any suggestions?

But if I find a money tree I'll sell you some seeds.

IMHO:

As long as you stay in the mud and don't want really low gears for rock crawling, a Corporate 14/Dana 60 combo should hold up fine. You put Rockwells on there and you'll just dig a hole to China in the mud. An NP205 with some sensible gears in the axles (4.56:1 or 5.13:1) will give you some good wheelspeed and save a little stress on those axles. Stay light.

I was just going by in some magazines how a lot of just mudrunners had 2.5's under them. And the sniper did really well in all events of the TTC with them, and didn't really seem to bog down in the mud pit. I already have a Coporate 14 that is set up for a dually, would I need to change anything or will it work OK. I know the NP 205's gearing isn't that great, but it being reliable and gear driven are what make it so tempting. Are there awy other T-cases you would recommend? Should I run the TH400 or the 700r4, Just wondering what would work better in this situation.

Thanks

2.5s are fine (perhaps even necessary) for a big, heavy, fulsize mudder. Probably overkill on a light CJ or YJ though. You're throwing away your main advantage (lightweight).

Having a tube frame, Snipers are still relatively light (probably around 3500-4K lbs. even with the 2.5s.

I'd go with the TH400. It's stronger and you don't need the lower gears of the 700R4 for mudrunning anyhow.

I would have agree with ya, i have a Cj7 with a BBC and a 60F and 14r, never really had any trouble when i used to just go to the local mudd boggs and such, but now that i play in all types of terrain i have broken shafts, i guess you could go with some badass axles and might be good for awhile. But if i was to build over i will go with rocks, i'm actually looking for some now, just my 2 cents. But ZPOWELL if you decide to go with the 60 look me up, i got one i will sell:D
