I have an 89 burb,6" lift,35"x13.5" baja claws and 30 spline 10 bolts and I haven't had any problems. Every weekend I go mudding, rockcrawling, trails you name it.If you snap a shaft your way to hard on the gas. Try not to saw the wheel from side to side when your stuck, don't pull in reverse and always let off the gas when it starts hoping up and down.If you like having a bruised brain-go get 1ton axles.

You will be better off to upgrade to 3/4 ton running gear with a 44 front and a 14 bolt rear either semi or full float. I bought my 81 and it had a 12 and 1o swapped into it after the other axles were destroyed. I then did a 1ton swap with a 60 and 14 bolt. I have gotten way to deep though, Ox Locker, Hydralic assist, Crossover and Tie Rod from Sky, 5.13 and the list goes on. I run either 47 LTBs on Hummer beadlocks or 44 boggers depending whether its mud or rocks. So the question you want to ask is how far do you go? What do you want to do five years down the road?

I wheel mine. Nothing hard core. I ran 35's on 5" of lift for quite a while with no problem on a 10b/14bsf. I am running 37's on the same lift/axles now. Soon to go to a 60/14bff, but I see no need if you are light on the pedal and not wheeling the shit out of it. Its better, but not necessary.

I don't know about the 60, but a 14b ff will not swap perfectly with the 10bolt, the spring pads are different widths. Though a 14b sf should swap with the 10bolt.

71plymouth got one more for yall. What axles do a 74 1/2 and 3/4 ton suburbans have?

c10 - 2wd 1/2 ton

c20 - 2wd 3/4 ton

c30 - 2wd 1 ton

k10 - 4wd 1/2 ton

k20 - 4wd 3/4 ton

k30 - 4wd 1 ton

14bff - 14 bolt full floater axle.

found in most 3/4 2wd and 4wd vehicles chev made. found in almost all 1 ton 2wd and 4wd vehicles chev made (that or a dana 70 in duallies). not found in 1/2 tons (or at least, very, very rare -- don't go looking for one in a stock 1/2 ton)

good axle, very tough. handles 44" tires no problem. stronger than a dana 60. less strong than a rockwell axle. 10.5" ring gear. tire and wheel assemble won't fall off if you break an axle. can use a detorit locker or an ARB locker, might have a spool available, i don't know.

============

the 1974 1/2 ton 4wd (k10) suburban would have a Dana 44 front and 12 Bolt rear axle.

the 1974 3/4 ton 4wd (k20) suburban would have a Dana 44 front and 14 Bolt Full-Floater rear axle.

if you have a choice get the 3/4 ton. it should have 4.10s, and you can run 35" tires with a 4" lift kit and have a fun off-road truck, and still be decent on-road.

with that set up, gas mileage should be (about) low teens with a gas motor. it shoudl have either a 350 or a 454. go witth the big block, you won't lose much mileage and you'll have lots more power. plus you get the coolness of a bigblock.

1981 GMC Suburban 383 stroker with an edelbrock offroad carb, 350, 208, dana 60 with 5.13s and ox locker, 14 bolt sky disc brake conversion with 5.13s and detroit, 12 inch super lift with 3 inch body, Shackle flip in rear no blocks, 5.5 inch shackle hangars on front springs, Redneck ram hydralic assist, Sky manufacturing crossover steering, Custom made front bumper and Warn 16.5ti winch, 47x17x16.5 LTBs on hummer double beadlocks with no recentering just 4.5 inch dually spacers, or 44x19.5x16.5 Boggers and crap load of other stuff.

I just finished getting all the components to the doubler set up from Northwest Fab turbo 400 203 205 I am just waiting on my refund to buy the doubler. The transmission that I am running right now was rebuilt on the camp trailer at Moab from a tranny I found in a junjyard there. I couldn't believe none of the parts stores carried a rebuild kit so it was rebuilt with no new gaskets or anything but it is still working. I am also going to be converting over to propane and bobbing the rear end. I really like the wheelbase of the burb and want keep it but I get sick of the overhang in the back. I was scraping all the way thru in the tubs at moab and that gets annoying. I like being out there and all the jeep guys just looking on in shock when I go up on two wheels or are simply amazed by the ability of the rig. If you care about body damage definately don't wheel one though.

Here is a link to body damage from just one run I did.

where did you get the windows?

The blue buggy was built by my wife, she got tired of sitting in the passenger seat and decided to build her own rig. She had just started a 2 year course at UAA in the Auto/Diesel program and built components as she progressed through the program. She started with a '74 Suburban and added parts as they were completed. 350 sbc, T-400, NP205, Dana 70 out of an early '70s International, Dana 60 out of a 1t. Chevy w/35 spline outers. 7.17 gears, 8274-50 Warn. The body was built out of 14ga. sheet metal and the windows were cut out of remnants of bus windshields by a friend who works in the body shop where she used to work (we're both retired now). She made the wheels, they were 6" wide and we had some 9.5" wide bands rolled and stretched the wheels to 15.5" wide. Her buggy made its maiden voyage in the fall of '92. She also owns an '04.5 Dodge with a Cummins and a trailer to haul the rig.

In the last pic that I posted with the 4 buggies, the 2 on either end are based on Suburban frames (the red one was mine) and the 2 in the center are based on M-715 frames. The one with all the seats was built with the intention of hauling paying passengers.

what if I don not want a doubler and just a part time stout t case? Besides 700 bucks for a metal adapter is a damn rip off. I heard 203s are trash due to the chain drive. Well, a 205 is gear driven and part time so why can't I get one and bolt it up?

The 205 is shorter than the 203. The difference in length is just about the length of the range box on the 203, so if you built a doubler and used the range box of the 203 and a 205, its about the same length as just the 203. If you don't want to do the doubler then you can swap to the 205 but you will NEED new driveshafts. You could put a part time kit in the 203, but its still a pig of a box with few good qualities, thats why everyone is suggesting you go doubler. You get an extra low range, a part time case, you can keep your driveshafts, and you'll be spending money for any of the other options anyways.
