: Stronger hub and spindle?

Has anyone fitted early 110 front hubs and spindles to the rear of there 90/disco? I've dummyed them up in the garage and it all seems to work exept that I can't figure out a drive member/shaft combination that will be the right length. Is this worth the trouble or are the stock NAS 90/disco rear wheel bearings good enough? Thanks.

i think all the LR / aftermarket shafts are going to be too short to work. there's a slim chance that 24spl coiler salisbury axles might work .... dunno.

the bearings are essentially the same (if not THE same?) ... i can't remember. if there is a difference it's pretty small and not worth the trouble imo.

sals are shorter than rover type: bigger pumpkin, same overall width

I don't really think you gain anything by doing this. Has anyone really ever heard of a spindle or bearing failure that wasn't due to poor maintenance?

Well, there was that one time at band camp........

I'm just being weird... like to have identical parts at both ends if I can. Did that with my old 88". I'll likely just use the disco rear axle with an ARB and RoverTracks HD halfshafts.

Just once when there was more water than grease inside my hub :)

The offending wheel bearing made plenty of noise to help me find it before there was any hub damage .... and hell, the timken bearings are soooo freakin cheap and easy to change, what's the big deal?

Slap some raw bacon fat in there and bolt it back together. I've seen people get home from a LONG ways away using this technique. No kidding.

I had a client drive from Pueblo Colorado to Fort Wayne, Indiana with the bearing cage gone! He told his father it made a noise when he turned right.

This has got to be one of the most robust components on a Rover and the last thing I'd be worried about breaking. Not to mention easy to fix, cheap to replace, dirt cheap to refurbish (bearings and some emery cloth).

Spindle failure?Yup. Just add an exploding 2522. Destroyed 2 spindles that way. If the damn thing had only blown apart in the bell area, woulda been much easier to repair on the trail---good thing I had a spare spindle the 2nd time it happened!

Drove an a completely smashed bearing for about 1000 miles and three months.

It was fine . . .

Curious, I've seen the blowed up 2522s of both Ike and Pendy and both of them didn't seem to have any further carnage and both were running lots of power, SBC for Ike and that silly engine in Pendy's 90. Their carnage was impressive, I can only imagine what it would have been like had it destroyed the spindle as well.

Definitely "curious" ! Both of my 2522 failures happened with front ARB locked and wheels dead straight ahead. They failed at the flange. First time, I drove on out 50 yards and tore it down. The pieces had exploded the outer hubnut and associated threads of the spindle. Second time, I stopped immediately and took off the flange/bits of axle so as not to induce any further carnage and it STILL burst/elongated the spindle enough that it was unusable. Second time, I had a spare spindle with me (thanks to Will T for keeping me in used spindles!)
Neither time was my weak 'ol 3.9 really being pushed to the limits! Got my 2522s from Keith, maybe the Allmakes just aren't what they used to be.
Anyway, I carry a spare spindle in the box now....:D

So are you using the spindle diesigned for the AEU 2522 or the the one originally on the truck. I use the spindle and hub that match a AEU installation and have not had this failure.

First the original RR spindle, then a D1. The way it broke I don't think it would've mattered.
