: Ultimate tire balancer?
Whiplash 05-12-2002, 09:53 PM http://www.mouseballz.com/pricing.html
Just an idea I am thinking of trying. Heavy steel core with a very hard rubber coating.
Pro's would be:
1) Corrosion proof
2) Small but not too small
3) Quieter than golf balls or BB's
4) Lower chance of damaging a tire.
Con's.
1) Higher price
2) Rubber coating will eventually wear off.
What do yall think?
coachgeo 05-12-2002, 10:38 PM this would be perfect for my idea of putting one in a drive shaft to before welding up as a balance system.. (if that concept will even work)
BillaVista 05-13-2002, 02:26 PM That is a wicked cool idea !
Bigger than a BB, smaller and heavier than a golf ball!
Wher the hell were you when I was filling my tires with BBs :flipoff2:
Let us know how it works
Whiplash 05-13-2002, 02:51 PM Coachgeo, your idea might work on a very short driveshaft but I dont think it would on a long one. The ball would not only have to find the right spot on the outer circumfrence but also the right spot on the length of the driveshaft. Due to the angle a driveshaft normaly runs, it would tend to stay down at the pinion end. If you were to try it, I would make a removable plug at the T-case end between the yoke ears. This way you can add or remove balls as needed and not affect the strength or balance.
Billavista, I won't be able to try it myself for a couple of months, my jeep is currently running on 20" jackstands and they don't seem to need any balancing :D.
BillaVista 05-13-2002, 03:43 PM hey, I have a D60 and a d70 running those same axle stands.
I find them VERY quiet :D
I don't think the driveshaft would work either, for the reason given, plus
1) the driveshaft is not really big enough diameter for the balls to gain advantage
2) The driveshaft needs to be in much better balance than any tire, or it will really show up
3) The BB's, Mouse balls, whatever don;t really "balance" in the traditional sense, more of a "radial force equalizer" or some such crap (at least that's how Equal explain it while hawking their powder designed to do same thing.
A good thought tho
coachgeo 05-13-2002, 06:34 PM Yeah I was sorta thinking the stuff in the tube would possibly just migrate to the bottom..
twistedmetal 05-13-2002, 07:03 PM What in the HELL could you have been looking for when you stumbled across"mouseballs!?" You have some explaing to do, buddy!:D

Busted. Now everyone knows my fetish.
I plan on getting 38" SX's and have been wracking my brain for somthing better to use than golf balls. I was cleaning the mouse on my 2nd computer when . Did a search on the net and voila.
Chief yelling alot 05-13-2002, 08:28 PM WTF are you guys talking about
how do you get balls to balance a tire???
I usily throw it on the mechene and it spins it and tels me where it needs some weight and how much

twistedmetal 05-14-2002, 04:56 PM That might work for girly sized tires, but us big dogs are moving some serious lugz! Can't balance big lugz!
RocKrawler 05-14-2002, 05:04 PM Theres stuff called "EQUAL" ( no, not the stuff in the blue paper packet you toss in coffee ) that goes into the tire, 4WPW sells it ( I know everyone hates them ) but it actually works. Had it in my 36" TSL's and no wobble or shake whatsoever, buddy had it in his 38" Swampers, same deal.. worked perfect.. just dont get any moisture in the tire or it lumps up & stops working.
fcfred 05-14-2002, 05:32 PM why don't you just fill your driveshaft with water?
twistedmetal 05-14-2002, 05:35 PM Yeah, tried the Equal, no good. Figure everytime you re-inflate your tires, you get a little moisture in 'em. haven't tried the balls thing yet, though. I do a lot of cruisin' when I ain't wheelin and I imagine they don't settle in very well at 20-25 mph! Boing, pung, thunk, ting, click...
Rudezuk 05-14-2002, 07:28 PM That is true, Equal only works on tires that dont get aired down......Try using equal and airing back up with CO2.........You will have a fun ride home:rolleyes:
I have equal on my 40's (16.5's)......it works ok....but still isnt that great.

I 'usually' throw it on the 'machine' and it spins it and 'tells' me where it needs some weight and how much.

CHIEF ... The whole idea of using something inside the tire is to keep rocks n muck from scraping the traditional wheel weights right off the rim.
TWISTEDMETAL ... IMHO the "golf ball" method is the best way for the big dawgs to balance their tires. Once you hit the trail and tear up your lugs, much less rip any off, you have altered the tire's balance and would need to have them re-done to maximize their lifespan.
The whole theory behind using golf balls is very simple. Take a yo-yo and drop it to the end of the string and swing the yo-yo in a circle, just don't whack yourself in the head.:rasta: The weight of the yo-yo keeps it running in a perfect circle under force/motion, that is providing you don't change the center axis. This is a simple demonstration of "centripetal force"(CF). The golf balls will constantly move, or settle, to the point of least weight as the CF pushes them there. IF/when you lose a lug the golf balls shift to where they are needed automatically/scientifically.
I am running beadlocks now so I can easily add whatever I want to my tires. The idea of using the "mouseballs" sounds kinda pervo, but they just might help keep the noise down at lower speeds. Until there is enough CF the golf balls will bounce around like shoes in the dryer. I am still looking around for kind of stainless BB like balls for more of a finite tuning of the balance. That may be a bit overboard but we'll see how it goes. :smokin::D
