: 4.0L and a TF727

Yes... I did a search.. found more questions than answers.

I'm exploring the possibility of replacing my AX15 with a TF727 behind my 92 YJ's 4.0L motor. A couple things I know:

1) Must drill hole in TF727 bellhousing to mount a CPS.
2) Use a auto 4.0L flexplate (to work with CPS)
3) Skid plate probably needs re-work
4) w/ a np231, front driveline/pan clearance could be an issue

Was looking though.. for any write ups. Like how to deal with the kickdown levers since I don't have a carb. etc. does anyone have a good website outlining someone elses conversion?

Thanks,
Travis

Would think that the 999/32RE would be a MUCH easier swap since that tranny came stock in the YJ's.

Maybe, but, the TF727 is a stronger tranny, with only a *slight* difference in gearing as well as a huge aftermarket for it.

The 4.0L might become a 4.6 or 4.7L stroker in a few years. Dont know if the TF999 would survive 300HP.

hmm..35 reads and no answers yet?... does this imply no one here has gone through this swap before and I am in un-chartered territory??

tf999 has deeper gears to start with (as deep as the lower gearsets for the tf727 that i've seen), will not have clearance issues with any NP case or D300, and can be beefed to handle well in excess of 300 hp.

go for the 999. it's cheaper and simpler than the tf727.

how wide of a case is the 231? the np208 (20") clears the 727 just fine, but the d300 (16") needs about 3-4" of lift to clear the pan adequately.

Whats teh length of the 999? and what vehicles besides newer jeeps are they found in?

I can find TF727's for around $150 each out of post 80 waggies. a price thats hard to beat.

The gearing difference is moot... something like a 2.54 1st in a 727 vs. a 2.74 in the TF999. to little for myself to consider that a factor.

What would I have to do to the TF999 to beef it up to handle 300+hp?

I keep hearing people say the TF999 is not worth it, compared to the TF727. The later is much stronger and has a better aftermarket for parts/upgrades. I'll go research the TF999 too of course.

Go to LOKAR for the kickdown cable.

2.74/1.55/1.00 tf999
2.45/1.45/1.00 tf727

dunno how long a tf999 is, but it's bound to be shorter than the tf727 (hence the reason they were used in CJs instead of the 727).

999s are available from 80s CJs with the i6 or v8, and XJs and wranglers with the i6. in post-1990 vehicles, it's found only in the wrangler, and is known as the 32RH.

you can also find them in AMC eagles behind the 258 i6.

talk to a tranny shop, they'd have a better idea than me as to how to do that. here's a guess tho: more clutch packs than stock, kevlar bands, and a few other bits and pieces. probly cost a good bit.

if ya don't want to dick around with that tho, the tf727 is your ticket. great compatibility (after you drill that hole) and the 231 will bolt right up.

my biggest problem with the kcikdown cable is my 4.0L, its NOT carb'd.. so where do I mount the cable?

got any pics anywhere?

every 4.0L I've seen has a bracket adjacent to the throttle body that accepts the kickdown cable (it also holds the thottle cable) considering the similarities between the 2 trannies, I would think it is feasable to use a kick-down cable from a 93-ish YJ 4.0L on your tranny.

Try PMing orbitcat on the board. I believe he has done this swap.

Here's a writeup on the throttle valve (not a kickdown) linkage and how it's adjusted. Should work the same no matter if it's carb or injection. I must be adjusted right before you drive it or you'll burn up the tranny in no time. The Lokar cable is the solution I'm using on a TBI 401 and TF727.

Edit: forgot the link and the Pirate server just stalled when I tried to edit earlier. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/fsj/ifsja727v8throt.htm

The length is not an issue between the 727 and 904, in 4x4 form they are within an 1/8 of an inch or so.
