: Trade YJ for a TJ?
Tomb Raider 01-03-2007, 10:49 PM Scenario:
I have a 95YJ.
4.0L, AW4 and NP242
D30 locked front, 8.8 LSD rear
XJ rear stretch/fuel cell and comp cut
SOA on 37's.
Rig has 191xxx miles, drivetrain has 87xxx.
I have an offer to trade for a TJ.
97 TJ
2.5L 4banger, AX5 and NP231
D30/35 locked front/rear
4" lift on 33's.
60xxx miles on rig/drivetrain
Now...sounds like a no brainer to keep mine....HOWEVER.....
He's offering to throw in an 86 blazer with a fresh 350, cammed and holley projection, fresh 350 tranny with shift kit and 3/4ton axles with a rear detroit. Basically says he bought it to put in his rig...but has no time due to family/kids...etc.
I would do both the drivetrain and axle swap into the TJ. I also have a high pinion 44 and rear 60 already in the shed. But I have no experience with TJ's...only YJ's.
Both mine and his have little to no rust, and no problems to speak of. Just trade pinks.
What would you do?

jibmaster145 01-03-2007, 11:07 PM  Hard choice! Nice YJ though I'm building mine up similar.
roger201 01-03-2007, 11:14 PM i do it without the winch and you could sell the blazer as a roller sence you have 9in and 44 in the shed
TeenyCAR 01-03-2007, 11:28 PM I don't understand why he would also throw in the blazer when it seems to me that what he has is already better than what you have? Definitely a no brainer to me.
Grendel 01-04-2007, 07:26 AM I wouldn't do it, that windshield sticker's :rainbow:!
Hell, it's not even Tuesday... was this posted on Tuesday?

Where in any of this is there a "tuesday's" bit of posting. Both projects require fab work, and both projects include axle swaps(60's), engine swaps(4.0L and a 350 for christ sake)and lockers(freggin detroit).....none of which in this particular case are "bolt on." :flipoff2:

Eh, and where in your original post did you ask a technical question on any of these non-bolt on mods?

You asked if you should swap...
I answered a silly question with an equally silly answer :p
Tomb Raider 01-04-2007, 08:02 AM So I should post this in the general discussion and hope that someone with a ford ranger replies "no don't do it!!"? Cmon....give me a break here. Just need a little input. I'm looking to "step up" in rigs, and this deal seems on the outside (other than the gay sticker) to be a good fit. You say you wouldn't do it...why? Other than the sticker. :p
Snoopy 01-04-2007, 08:42 AM Do it.

Dood, I am messing with you. :flipoff2:
I would do it, if you're going to do the Chevy swap into the TJ. If not, then I wouldn't not swap.

Call me a douche then. Was just trying to keep my "thick skin" on. :smokin:
SurvCat 01-04-2007, 10:51 AM My only concern is that you know what's been done to yours(that is, if you built yours yourself) I would definitely want a TJ over a YJ, but is the labor and cost building the TJ up going to be worth it? You have a fine looking rig there.....looks like all you need is to swap in a 350 and bigger axles and the YJ would be ready to go. You could, however, sell off some of the TJ parts(2 piece hard top) and make some $$ from that to fund your new project
It's a tough decision either way you go
BTW...if I wasn't looking to get out from under my payments, I would have traded you my TJ for your YJ
apeters89 01-04-2007, 11:09 AM I like my YJ personally... but I would seriously consider the swap. It will cost you money in the long run 'cause you need to do the swap. It will also leave you with no wheelable rig for a while while you do the swap. On the other hand, doing the swap is half the fun.
offroadjunkie 01-04-2007, 11:29 AM i think he is throwing in the blazer because youve got your yj built and he knows that his tj isnt. To me it sounds like a good deal if you dont mind taking the time to build up another right. You didnt say if the blazer had a good tranny in it but you might need to locate a trany and or transfer case. Just something to think about. But i love your yj
biggreentj 01-04-2007, 11:39 AM i say do it.
crusty1007 01-04-2007, 11:43 AM i say carburetion suks. sell the blazer complete and buy a newer motor/trans combo for the TJ.

projection is "technically" fuel injection...
I hear the newer units don't have near the problems that the older ones did, but I've never actually used either one.
crusty1007 01-04-2007, 11:58 AM oops missed the "projection",
i believe its like throttle body fuel injection?
offroadman83 01-04-2007, 12:01 PM Honestly------------Keep the yj.............you know everything about it and the motor is done. You will never need another bigger motor with the proper gearing. I wish my jeep still had the 4.0 in it. --------------Kyle

True....swap out the axles and run it til the 4.0 dies(saving up $$ until this happens) then swap the engine out
gunmetalxj 01-04-2007, 12:06 PM Just swap the 44 you have into the yj and call it done. Plus you got all that custom sweet ass fab parts on yours.
Go_Vols 01-04-2007, 12:14 PM I wouldn't do it, and I'm a TJ owner. You have a nice YJ and you have a lot of goodies to go into it... unless you really want another BIG project, I think you're in a good place where you're at... coil springs and links are easy to install, and you'd be doing this on the TJ as well (longer control arms, wheelbase stretch, etc.)
Bottom line, I think you have a good start where you are... if you want coils, install them with the new diffs... leave the engine swaps and all that to someone else, it's a pain and it gets expensive (nickel & dime'd to death)
wrangler4x4_97 01-04-2007, 12:16 PM I agree to keep the yj. You seem to have lots of time invested into it along with money. With axles your jeep will become even more capable than now. Along with the TJ side is when you go to stretch it and build it you will basically trash the design of the coils and do something custom so why not do that in the yj in time. Just seems to me that since you know what you built is capable why spend the off time to be behind in progress
Go_Vols 01-04-2007, 12:29 PM Hey, and after you put coils/coil-overs in it later, you can put round headlights as well! :grinpimp:
rajincajingt 01-04-2007, 12:33 PM see how much he wants that blazer for. i would take that juice and bolt it up under your yj.
the swap aint a bad idea either - just be careful of over building for your driving skill level, a v-8 one ton TJ will get you places you might not be ready for.

Ding ding we have a winner, get the blazer if you need more juice, otherwise I would keep and build the YJ.

Tomb Raider 01-05-2007, 08:43 PM I passed on the trade. Thanks for the input, it was enlightening to say the least.

jonnyjeeps 01-13-2007, 11:30 PM If you want a tj and every yj owner thinks about it
trade him asap sell the tj and the blazer and go buy a 4.0 tj with a 3" lift
sooooo simple
resqme 01-14-2007, 11:02 AM Call me a douche then.
OK, you're a douche... :flipoff2:
Seriously, you made a good choice, the 4 banger brings the suck.
