So I was right, there are 2.5 tons with CTIS. If I am not abloe to get ahold of these is there a way you could get them daniel? Are they portals or something? How does the air line route to the wheel? Are they similar to the older ones with just some mods on them or are they a completly different? Let me know. Thanks.

Hey Daniel,

I've got 4 M109A4 (ESP)Vans in my motorpool right now. I haven't torn into them myself (yet) but I did attend the fielding course at TACOM. It's my understanding the Extended Service Program package added a aluminum collar of the axle tube that is JB Welded (really!) on. Air is plumbed through this collar through the hub. I believe the rest of the hub is also modified (with o-ring grooves) standard M35 fair, BUT I'll see if can check to be sure. I would be surprised if they came up with something like special hubs (read: expensive) for the ESP's. The Program only got the green light to proceed IF the completion cost was no more the one-half the procurement cost of a FMTV duece. Alot of corners were cut to keep the cost down.

Believe it or not the ESP CTIS has a better track record than the M900 series 5Tons for maintaining system integraty (air pressure). And NO disc brakes, same old shoes. But they did include a dual circuit master cylinder, with dual hydravacs. But that's another story.......:usa:

THe 5ton CTIS systems are horrible and never stay working for any amount of time. In my 14yrs in the military Ive seen a lot more that didnt work than did. I hope the 2.5 tons work better. Sounds like more things to just go wrong to me!

I'll see what I can find out. 'May take me a couple of days. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera, yet!

Personally I hate CTIS. It IS a royal PITA chasing air leaks and such. Of course all of the Army's CTIS with the exception of the HMMWV (which is an optional retrofit) are electronically monitored. My hunch is the Army spent all this money on CTIS NOT to improve cross-country capability, BUT TO SAVE MONEY ON TIRE WEAR. The logistics procurement branch will believe anything a manufacturer tells them: "Oooh it constantly monitors the tire pressure, so the operator doesn't have too." Hey, all the M900 series 5Ton and most ever duece I 've ever seen has open diffs front and rear. Do you really think Uncle Sam cares that much about cross-country mobility?
