: Back from Moab - AWESOME!!!

We made it back from Moab early yesterday morning… 2300 miles, round trip!

Moab Rim
Hell's Revenge
Pritchitt & Behind The Rocks
Poison Spider & Golden Spike
Upper/Lower Helldorodo

We had some extra time, and had run all the main trails in Moab so we drove up to Montrose CO for a day. Thanks to the folks at McPherson Offroad for showing us around!
We ran the competition course on Colamity.

My zuke did great, Jayson's was just awesome! Since Moab is very wheelbase sensitive, I used my variable wheelbase extender several times (strap with a helping hand :p ) :)
Results from several of the well known obstacles:

Dump bump - Jayson crawled, Myself w/ helping hand.
Mickies Hot-tub - Jayson crawled, Myself w/ helping hand.
Devil's Staircase - Jayson crawled, Myself crawled.
Escalator - Jayson winch, Myself winch (none of us found the right line by the hole on the second waterfall. Got some great pics though!).
Rocker knocker right - Jayson crawled, Myself crawled.
Rocker knocker left - Jayson crawled, Myself good bump required.
Rock pile - Jayson winch, Myself winch.
White knuckle - Jayson crawled right side, Myself crawled right side (with Jayson holding a strap just in case! That would be a long tumble, and my front tires just BARELY touch the top!)
Hummer hill - Lots of fun to drive down, rather ho-hum climb… (there is a spot before hummer hill that is awesome. Some portions are impossible, tires still turning forward as you slide back down backwards! A true rush!)
Launch Pad - 4wd optional…
Double Whammy - Jayson crawled in several places, Myself good bump required (my first try was the angle approach and proved very exciting, resulted in a 3/4 rotation roll over! Something to note, the Moab Car Quest stocks the Samurai EFI air cleaners, after mine got drowned with motor oil while lying on it's side :) ).

The Arizona guys would have felt at home at Montrose. Ledges, dodging big boulders, while running up tight canyons…. Lots of fun! They have a trial called "Die Trying" that is supposed to be awesome. They used it for the competition last year. They set up 12 gates, then ended up cutting out the last 6 gate when it became obvious there was not enough time for the competition rigs to get thru it… Sounds like a return trip will be required :) …

Half of my Moab pics are on a friends laptop computer since I did not have enough memory cards for the whole week. I'll wait to post Moab pics until I have a chance to get and go thur all of them. However, here's a few from Montrose to get you started… :D :D

If you make it out to Montrose, look up Spring and Trevor McPherson. They were nice enought to play hookey and show us around last friday. Really great people, very helpfull. They even gave us free T-shirts and stickers... :)

Danny had a flat on his trailer on the way home, and stopped at a little tire place in Bloomfield (near Farmington NM). The man at the tire shop offered to take him out and show him some trails and (something like this) "watch hem roll dem purdy trucks....". :D

We had planned to go to Farmington for a day, but could not get ahold of our guide there. That's when we decided to divert to Montrose, where Danny knew the McPherson's...

Daayaam!

You guys got Suzukis up both Mickey's and Dump Bump? That's pretty good! I've seena couple reverse endos there over th years from Zuk guys trying to get up the Bump.

Was it still closed and fenced off as it was during the Safari?

There is a fence around it from the road, but you can get to it after you pay your $5 for Hell's Revenge. Technically, it's on that property and you were supposed to have your permit before.

I had also heard that Prichett had gone up, but when we got there it was still $2. So, some of that may have happened only for the Safari.

I watched the video last night, Jayson gave it a little bump to get started then crawled the rest of the way up. My first attempt was unassisted, and I had both tires in the air when I 'bumped' it a bit.... Then a couple guys grabbed a strap and that was enought to keep the front's on the rock and pulling. Mickey's was the same way, Jayson crawled out and I did a nice rear bumper stand on my first attempt. A little extra 'man power' and mine came on out.

Jayson has so much front weight bias that his truck is just amazing at climbs. However, he pays the price for down hill stuff. We accused him of trying to save tire ware by keeping at least one rear tire in the air on decents! :) The only way we could get him into Mickey's was to lower him in with a strap. We keep telling him, 'yea, a tire is in the air but it's not going anywhere'.... But, we have not convinced him yet... :D

I really which I had a picture of him on the Rim. Coming down he did a front wheel stand on the crack next to the road, and the back end shifted over towards the edge. I swear his eyes were the size of silver dollars ! He hit the brake, turned the wheel, hit the gas, all within less than a second, and everything he did just made it worst! From that point on, every time we started up a trail, he would ask "do we have to come back down this"... :D :D

Did you guys try the left line on white knuckle before you did the right?

Good pics.

Good pics.

Jayson did, but there was a small v shaped ledge that his front tires would hit just as it started up, then the truck would slide back down. They stacked a few rocks, and tried several times but never came up with a way to get the fronts over without the left rear going into an undercut. He played with it a while, then moved over to the right and crawled straight up.

Deana, drove the BIG blazer up the left side. Hit the gas and stand back! :D They also went up rock pile with the Blazer. No need to stack rock with 44's. :)

However, there is an off camber section just before you get to Rock Pile. We had to run a winch line from the blazer up to a LARGE rock to keep the blazer from sliding down into the canyon. The rockwells and 44's were just too wide for the line thru there, and none of us knew how we'd get that 3-1/2 ton beast back out if it rolled down there! Big is not always a good thing.. :D

Good to hear you finally got rid of the heep... :) Now you can build a real truck.. :D

Yea, I tested the cage again on Double Whammy. ;) I got the video from Jayson last night, but I have not made it to that part yet. I did manage to put a little bend in my chromoly this time. I did a nice 3/4 roll, but the hardest part was trying to reach the key to turn the motor off! Gotta love that EFI, it was running even after being side down.. :D :D

My roll was no surprise (I had already said I had a mission to make it up Double whammy this year), but we also managed to roll Marry YJ that they had just finished built up. This thing was spotless, custom WMS shaved 14 bolt and HP 60, Atlas II, 400R4, on 39.5 TSL's.... Marry had easily brought it up Double Whammy, then she talked her boyfriend Ken into taking it around again with Danny spotting. We were up there BS'n at the trucks when I heard crunching sounds. I looked back in time to see the YJ come to a stop against the wall! It got real quiet as everyone waited to see what Marry did...... I mean, this lady would actually take the truck to the car wash each night to clean the dust off..... She took it pretty well, there was no screeming, and everyone made it out alive.. :)

I've got some great pics that I'll get off of Robbies laptop tonight. I should have most of them posted tomorrow....
